For the main, i had their 5-a-day salad with added grilled chicken breast. While the salad was great and i absolutely loved the tiny pepper drops (bell peppers in the shape of a teardrop), the chicken had an unpleasant aftertaste, as if it had been sitting in a cold oven or near oven cleaner.. Others in my party had their usuals- jacket potato with chilli and chilli with chips and they were quite satisfied. After the meal we moved downstairs to have a few drinks, when i went to get a round in, i paid by card and two different bank cards were declined several times, using different card machines (despite both cards having adequate funds on it) and i was advised to 'give my bank a wee phone' as the machines had been working perfectly all day. I had to get my partner to lend me some cash and felt quite awkward. About 10 minutes later they had put signs up saying 'card machines not working', even though moments ago it had been my 'fault' for the card payments not going through.. Might go back in for drinks or food again, but probably not any time soon..

I don't love this area of Glasgow - the roads are so confusing, the area is quite industrial and it's not really somewhere you'd head for a pint. Or, so I thought. Once in the doors of the Laurieston, it was like I had an epiphany. It was just like my Nanna's house (although my Nanna's was a bit classier, no offence). It was warm, comforting, welcoming and had some seriously retro decor. As others have mentioned, there's a tasty selection of beers from Fyne Ales but on this visit I opted for cider. We took a seat in the lounge area as the bar was pretty heaving for 1pm on a Saturday (those damn subcrawlers!) and enjoyed the atmosphere and hospitality of by far the friendliest bar staff I've encountered in a long time. Over they came to take our photo, find out our story and give us tips and advice on completing the subcrawl. They even have maps for you! That is SO cool and was very handy later on when I'm sure some people didn't know where they were (um, like me). There's a JUKEBOX as well - a proper old school one where some of the cards are handwritten. It tells you that you have to pay, but just push the buttons and you'll discover that you don't. I put on some great tunes while we were there but I'm not sure anyone else appreciated them. Handy tip: the ladies toilet is only accessible from the lounge.

Yes from the outside you would not give it a second glance. It all looks a bit run down and perhaps even a bit dodgy. To be honest the inside ain't much of an improvement on the outside. It is an old bar that looks like it has not been done up in years. Why four a stars then? Well, what it does not have in terms of polished finishes and decor is made up for by the friendly atmosphere and great array of beers on offer. The staff could not have been more welcoming. They supplied Subcrawl maps and made a point of coming out to chat with us. The even took our photo as they take records of all the "subcrawlers" who pass through their bar. I must admit, I stuck to a boring bottle of becks on the drinks front as I was being very careful what alcohol I took on at this early stage. I would like to go back though and try a few of the far more interesting beers they had on offer. 4 stars for a traditional and slightly shabby, but friendly boozers.

And this is the perfect spacious pub to meet those mates, or even come in on your own to rest those smelly feet. No one here will judge, man or woman. There was talk of Tennents renovating it, gentrifying it if you will, but a petition soon put a stop to that (I think?). It'd be a pity if that happened, coz it's kind of a 'heritage' pub, or at least it should be with Glasgow's history seeping out from every nook and cranny and even sitting on some of the seats. Its horseshoe bar's commanding, decked out in antique pine, backlit by large engraved brewery mirrors and well stocked with ales, lagers, spirits and wine. There's a large floor space to stand at busy times, plenty of seating and even a snug if you want to get away from the crowd. They also say there's a welcoming gay corner up by the left of the bar, but I've never noticed any distinction. Yes, the food's cheap pub grub and you get stared out if you dare sit in a regular's seat (only during the day, I think), but I still find Tennents a great place to drink good beer, while away an hour or three and stare at Chinese students devouring the spare rib and chicken wing combo (that last bit sounded weird :-/ ) Oh, and I tend to sit at the back on the right hand side, under the brewery mirror. I'm good at staring.

If you're lucky enough to get in, you'll like it. It's cosy, it's warm, it's snug. But it is tiny. I mean, everyone inside could probably touch a wall, no matter where they sit. They have Belhaven on draft, and the pint I got was cold and tasty, and I got a warm welcome from the one barman on duty. The bar is so small, I'd imagine if they put two in, there's be collisions galore. I am possibly too large to fit behind the bar, and not in a FNAAAR FNAAAAR way. I would possibly get claustrophobia. Other than the size, and pretty snazzy lights hanging from the ceiling, there's not much that's unique about it. It is, at the end of the day, just a wee pub underneath The Chip.
