In a nutshell: Tending to my indecisiveness as a first-time…read moreconsigner - YES Pleasant experience answering my questions - SURE Letting me pay to get my bag back for the price on our contract - NOPE Making up excuses to not let me have my bag and trying to charge me more - MY ULTIMATE PROBLEM WITH THIS STORE I came to the store as a first-time consigner. Curious about the process, I asked a million questions to make sure that I understood all the loopholes associated with consigning. Heather and Gideon were great and patient with answering my questions and successfully convinced me to commit to selling my bag. I was visibly anxious but decided to go for it, having been told that I am able to pay a pulling fee of 10% the asking price of my bag, if for some reason I decide I wanted to keep it. Immediately when I got home, I regretted my decision and reached out to Gideon about paying the fee to get my bag back. He called me and tried to convince me to let them sell it, and bantered about how he had already added it to a list to sell at an event over the weekend and that I would have to pay more to make up for the costs were incurred for the update to the list. I looked over my BS of a "contract" which stipulated that I would be responsible for 10% (as he had also verbally stated.) When I called him again, he told me I would have to pay 10% + 15% to make up for THEIR agreement that they made with the vendor 30 mins after I left (aka this agreement probably doesn't exist.) . While I had been timid this entire process (total of 3 hours), I stood my ground and demanded that we stick to the original contract. All in all, what started out as friendly, informative service turned into a sketchy/unprofessional/unethical business. I may at first had cold feet about parting with my bag, but as soon as I felt jipped by some scheme to make easy profit off my bag... Nah fammmm - I'm keeping my baby. But a contract is a contract, so I held up my end of the bargain. They gave me a 1 hour window to get my bag immediately, to honor the 10% that was on my original contract... Absolutely ridiculous experience. I suggest coming here if you are desperate to be cheated out of your money. *** Let me make it clear, I upheld their policy and hence paid them the $120 promised by the contract I signed. This review is simply a comment to the sketchiness of TSDC's business in trying to alter that contract last-minute to make more money off of me. It is not my responsibility if the business is "disappointed" in not being given the opportunity to sell MY bag. My problem is that TSDC made it very difficult for me to take my bag back by making up excuses as to why I can't take it back, and adding an extra charges. Please respect your OWN policy and contract by simply returning other people's items when they ask for it, for the cost that was initially agreed upon. ***

Even if tags were old it was on the inside and it's clear that all the clothing items were examined carefully before putting up for sale. Their mission to help people who are homeless and people with AIDS is just another reason to shop here, one of many locations. There are even tax deductible membership dues and discounts if you decide to join Housing Works. I left with a gray Theory blazer and lots of inspiration to do more thrifting and check out their other locations!

E.g. an old cashmere sweater full of holes $30, a small yarn of wool not enough for making a cap $10, tacky no quality jewelry above $20, etc. Still some people come and are looking for some "treasures", this cannot happen, because all those might never reach the store shelves. However, I would give a high credit to a foreign born owner (barber) to establish those stores to absorb at least to some extent so much clothing and other items that otherwise would have finished in the garbage cans. This only underlines an urgent need to establish a high capacity thrift stores in dense populated affluent Manhattan areas, at least 3 mega Good Will stores were closed in Manhattan during last few years, apparently because of a total incompetence of the top highly overpaid staff and not dealing with mass corruption at all levels, best valuable items hardly make it into stores or appear on online auctions. So, if a foreign born owner can run those stores and still with some profit, why across the country tax free store chain decades in existence cannot do the same?

She pulls her phone and I kid you not spends almost two minutes googling how much it's worth online? And looks at me with a straight face and says it's $20. HA. I said no thank you I'll just take this candle. I hand her cash and she gives me change and doesn't even look me in the eye, no thank you, no have a nice day, just hands me change and walks away and starts saying something in Russian to the other girl. I would not shop here again or recommend the store to anyone, the selection / prices are subpar at best, and the customer service is seriously lacking.

If you really dig, you might be able to find something, but the strong smell of unwashed clothing makes it difficult to stay long. The classic thrift store business model is one of volume. Since the stock is acquired for free, it is possible to sell items at a rate significantly lower than average retail. The small sales pile up day after day to become a large source of revenue. When you price the donations too high, they pile up day after day until the store becomes revolting to shop in and sales begin to suffer. I mean no disrespect, but it's the harsh truth. I would love to shop here and am upset that I don't. Please change your business model.

On a more personal note, I visited Albertine three times before deciding to feature it on The Boutique of the Week, not because I was wary of the selection, but the price is higher than my norm. However, Albertine truly is too good to pass up and is the perfect place to splurge and treat yourself to an amazing piece (or two, or three...). The jewelry is the best feature of Albertine and will have you coming back just to drool over it. The exquisitely edited collection is priced from $100 to a steep $1,000+. The beautiful vintage pieces are displayed in glass cases, but touching and dressing up is encouraged. Delicate necklaces share a wall with leather cuffs, and pendants of owls and horns share a case with a silver snake ring and jade earrings. Prices can only be found out from a large binder where handwritten notes and photos document the inventory. The womenswear boasts up-and-coming designers and custom-made pieces that are feminine and vintage-inspired ranging from $150-600+. Flowy fabrics in all colors can be found in floor-length silk gowns and highly-structured bomber jackets. The cozy store normally only has one or two sizes displayed, but the staff is happy to find you the perfect fit in the back. A Victorian couch faces a large mirror for ample viewing, and you can even sometimes find the owner's dog napping as the eclectically chic staff offers spot-on critiques and styling tips.
