I had been wanting to come to this library for a while now. As expected, this is a beautiful and…read moreclean library. You can kind of get lost in some of the hidden pockets of it. If you desire a more communal public space, there are plenty of seats in the middle of the library. But if you are looking for a more quiet, subdued, isolated experience, check the far corners of the library at the end of some of the shelves and you'll find perfectly unoccupied spaces to be in your own zone. While I don't love that you have to take a ticket to park, the first two hours here are free. Bonus perk: you don't have to be a resident of Beverly Hills to have a Beverly Hills library card. I signed up for one and I'm looking forward to using this in addition to my LAPL card. Another bonus perk: they offer passport services here.

The only complaint I have is that the library closes early, at 7:00 PM. It would be nice if they closed one or two hours later.

Don't be like me & just instantly go to one of the paid lots across the street where you have to pay $5 for an hour of parking (especially when you're doing a super quick stop like I was that lasted 15 minutes). The library itself is one of the newer ones in the LAPL system. It's got a more modern, almost industrial feel to it that is unlike the other branches in the system I've visited. And I say that as a complement. There's something strangely fresh & new about this small branch. The staff here is incredibly friendly and helpful. Everyone greeted me with a huge smile and an eagerness to provide the best of service. Inventory of books is a bit smaller than other branches that I've been to, but the power of being an LAPL branch is that they can get you any book from any branch within a day or two (assuming there isn't a waitlist) so if there's something you have your heart set on getting, there's a good chance this branch can get it to you in no time.

From the minute you walk in to this branch you find yourself thinking 'this is somewhere special' and I feel like that should be the feeling you have going in to any library. Staff is very friendly (maybe to their detriment as everywhere I looked there was some form of a line with people waiting while staff bent over backwards to help whomever they were talking to to a level beyond expectations). I really appreciated that but could see how so impatient customers could see that as a negative. Overall, this branch is smaller than most LAPL branches. And the ground level parking lot is very small with narrow spots. if this is your local branch, it's definitely worth visiting as much as possible. However, I think if you live closer to another brach, best to visit that one than go out of your way to visit this branch.

Almost everyone has their head down working on homework. - The library has CLICC - Campus Library Instructional Computing Commons - where you can borrow a laptop with your Bruincard. https://www.library.ucla.edu/about/programs/campus-library-instructional-computing-commons-clicc/ - There are study rooms and pods for group study or working on group projects - reservations required and spaces book quickly so plan ahead if possible. The lower level area is another great place to go for quiet study but do explore the upper floors filled with books. - Lockers are also available though I've never used one. (Check the school website below or ask a staff member for more information.) - YRL has a library special collections (LSC) section for researchers who need to access to archival materials. The website provides guidance on how to gain access. https://www.library.ucla.edu/help/lsc-materials/ This is a good place for resources for students, faculty, and staff who study humanities, public affairs, etc. and there's a convenient coffee bar inside. Parking is shared with a park so just be aware that it can be limited, but during my visit I saw plenty of people coming to and from the library that there was a decent amount of turnover so you should be able to get a spot quickly. There is also a small free library area right outside the main library near the staff stairs. Don't forget to check it out in case there is something there you'd like to add to your own personal collection.

On top of always seeing the police here, one of their regulars takes up skirt photos of women and…read moregirls from under the big study tables, but the staff refuse to do anything...which just makes me wonder what crimes they are actually calling the cops for. Like how messed up of a crime do you have to commit here, for the staff to care enough to call the cops? Most of the staff are women as well, which is the most disappointing thing about this. I had gone here to work one day and sat at one of the big empty study tables. This "regular", who was already sitting elsewhere when I got there, then comes and sits directly across from me at this big empty table. He did not have anything with him except his phone, and after a few minutes, he turns to sit sideways on his chair, takes his phone out, and with the camera covertly pointed at me, bends down with the camera below the table. I hear a couple soft clicks and I cross my legs even harder and turn away, which makes him casually get up and go to a computer table like that didn't just happen. I went to tell the librarian, who brought me to the library manager, and she said she would talk to him. She went over to him, spoke with him briefly then came over to me. She said that he was a regular and that he told her he didn't take pictures of me, so they believed him and they weren't going to kick him out. I said she should check the cameras then. She left for almost an hour and came back to tell me that she saw him sit down and bend over like I described, but could not make out what was on his phone screen from the camera footage, so after talking to her supervisor, it seemed to her like I was overreacting and the situation was out of her hands. I asked to be able to see the footage myself, and she refused, reiterating that the man was a regular and I had no proof. Then she just got up and left me to go back to her desk. I reported this to the county library system, but never heard back. I have heard similar stories about this branch. THIS IS NOT A SAFE SPACE. Please be so careful bringing your children here or coming here for any length of time as a woman. The "regular" who took up skirt photos of me was male, white, thin, about 6 foot, probably in his mid 50s to mid 60s.

More Than Just a Library…read more Peninsula Center Library was the very first library I visited when I moved to the Los Angeles South Bay, and over the years, this place has been through a LOT with me. I've used it during periods of unemployment, for booking study rooms while interviewing for jobs, and simply as a quiet place to sit, read, think, or get some work done. It has become one of those places that holds a lot of memories for me. First, the building itself deserves some appreciation. The modern design and huge windows that let in so much natural light are a must for me. Walking into a bright library just makes my day better. There's also an underground parking structure, although it's limited, and I especially appreciate it on those hot South Bay days when having my car parked in the shade makes a difference. I also LOVE the Friends of the Library sales. They have highly discounted books, CDs, DVDs, and -- my personal favorite -- PUZZLES! The larger monthly book sales are especially fun because they open up the big room and have a much bigger selection. I've bought countless books and puzzles here over the years. I've participated in their reading program, too, and the staff have always been helpful. More recently, work has made this location less convenient for me, so I don't get here nearly as often as I used to. I now visit Katy Geissert Civic Center Library more often simply because of convenience. I used to come here 2-3 times a week, and now I'm probably here around 2-4 times a month. It honestly makes me a little sad because I still love this library. The library's online/app services have also been incredibly useful. I've used them to reserve study rooms and place holds on books without having to make an extra trip. And speaking of study rooms -- these have been a lifesaver. Whether I need somewhere quiet and private to focus on work or a reliable place to take a virtual job interview, being able to reserve a room has been incredibly valuable to me. I also love the bookmark contests! I get to see the creativity of local kids, and some of their artwork is seriously impressive -- sometimes downright jaw-dropping. I love grabbing a free bookmark on my way out. At this point, my typical library visit feels like: walk in for a book, walk out with a book AND a bookmark. The kids' area also looks like such a fun space, even though I don't personally use it. Overall, I love the staff, programs, resources, architecture, and just the general vibe of Peninsula Center Library. It has been much more than a place to check out books for me. It has been a quiet refuge, a workspace, an interview space, a place to discover books, and occasionally a place to find a great puzzle for a few dollars. Even though I don't visit as frequently as I used to, this library will always have a special place in my South Bay story. And yes -- I'll probably keep coming back for those Friends of the Library sales and puzzles.
