Yesterday was Lundi Gras (French for "Fat Monday") & today is Mardis Gras or Fat Tuesday so Laissez les bon temps rouler!! (Let the good times roll) I'm staying home with my sweetheart who still is in bed recuperating from her badly sprained ankle but I got #1 over to my neighbor who is taking him to his first Mardi Gras parade :-)
Today marks the the 40-day fasting season between Ash Wednesday and Easter. While many people thinks it's a New Orleans thang but according to the folks around here the first known American Mardi Gras celebration in 1703 (yes, even before New Orleans which was founded in 1718), but I'm staying out of that debate. However there's no argument that Mobile is home to "America's Family Mardi Gras." Indeed brochures tout "America's Original, America's Family Mardi Gras." The shenanigans and debauchery that happens in Nawlins is not tolerated here, I know that the parades here actually have lots of folks from Louisiana here with there while family.
I'm not going to go into the long history, you can follow the link below for that. But a Nawlins friend of mine, and Yelp Elite (Shannon S.)has done a video on the New Orleans vs Mobile Mardis Gras history that you might enjoy: https://youtu.be/vq1lx6CO7-w
I'm going to sit with my honey to watch some of the parades, and there's a bunch, on TV so happy Mardis Gras and the bonus Fat Taco Tuesday my friends! Laissez les bon temps rouler!!
