After many years, we made the trek back to check out Mardens again. What a sad store it has become. The clientele was beyond obnoxious, I heard a (what I assume was) a manager/trainer yelling at some boy about how she didn't care WHAT he did, he just needed to figure it out and DO it! The prices have increased, which is to be expected since everything else has gone up, but, $100 for something that's very clearly broken or missing pieces is just insane. A great place to find a bargain on items, ranging from clothing to cooking utensils to furniture. As you can imagine, and as with most discount stores, inventory can vary greatly, depending on the time of year or even week to week. However, we've pleasantly been surprised by some of our clothing purchases and other, random necessities. They have an underrated selection of furniture, primarily couches, chairs, and tables, and I would easily by a few items for my finished basement if I lived closer. If you're a bargain, hunter, and looking for a place that can be a rewarding experience, you should consider a visit to the store. read more

The Sanford store is consistently a mess compared to other locations. The staff is also less friendly and after an unpleasant interaction with the manager we can see why. She was not interested in speaking with us and carried on a side conversation with someone. She was making sure we understood she was far too busy to be wasting her time talking with us. Anything we said was met with a dismissive reply. We left a full cart right in front of her and left. We'll not be back. Managers set the tone for a business. The employees watch how they behave and interact with customers and will figure out what they can get away with. I don't know how we got to the point where store employees pick fights with customers but a lot of the behavior customers now exhibit is because of how poorly we are now consistently treated. read more

Poor customer service. I needed a quick cut at the fabric counter. When I got to the area, I wasn't sure where to go, which I mentioned to the clerks. I waited patiently until they called another clerk who arrived and immediately took another quilter. Two people said I was next, but I ended up replacing the fabric and left the store. Frustrating 30 minutes I'll never get back. read more

My wife and I went to see the couches because we are in the market for one. So when did Marden's become a high priced place for furniture? The prices were crazy!!! Recliners with very noticeable tears and missing material was "discounted" to $200! That is absolutely terrible for stuff that was destroyed!! The couches we looked at look old and also looked like people were sleeping on them, those were $600 + absolutely unheard of! No name brands and prices you can actually compare on the internet and see the insane mark ups. Needless to say we will not be purchasing and furniture through Marden's. Marden's has made me kind of sad face in recent years. I'm not saying that this surplus and salvage store ever blew my doors off, but they seem to have taken a ring-of-fire nose dive within the past cinqo anos. Given that some of this stuff is hauled out of fire damaged buildings, and that some of it is the last bottom scraps from the barrel of fashion, it is highly unlikely that you're going to find an heirloom from the haus of prada to bestow upon your grandchildren. That said, if you need: a can opener, a half present knife set, a patriots jersey, some wedge heels with scuff marks, or some books by Joel Olsteen, you can probably get it at Marden's for less than a coffee at Dunkin Donuts. Found an item clearly marked $10, cashier states no, it's 40% off the retail price. I said why isn't it $10 since it has a sticker that says $10? She said I'll ask, went to some other young girl who agreed with her. Scam honestly. Worst customer service....rude behavior We were shopping for hard wood flooring and decided to stop into Sanford Mardens, after a few minutes we made a decision to purchase 320 square feet, approximately 16 bOxes. Price was clearly marked $2.99 a square foot. But felt like BAIT AND SWITCH, when we reached the check out, they tell us tag was wrong and it's now $3.99 a square foot. A good manager should have honored the price as marked, sold us our 320 square feet then raised the price after we had left. We felt embarrassed and slightly humiliated Then pissed off We were also going to purchase a mattress while we had our trailer, We left and will probably never go bacK read more

I have never failed to go into that store without the wonderful help of every person that works in this store. They are friendly accomodating and make the phrase the way life should be a great slogan for Maine. The inventory is hIT or miss but it is definitely worth the trip. I HAVE found great bargains for at least half the price. Keep up the good work Marden's. I wish customer service and this old time shopping that exists there was back to every other industry. Cheap stuff. This chain of stores is known for its bargains. I guess a lot of it is salvage & leftover odds & ends. I think this is the last stop on the discount rounds before the stuff gets shipped off to a 3rd world country. Personally, I think the best thing they have going is the carpeting, flooring, appliances, furniture & random household items. I'm not a big fan of hunting for bargains or wading through piles and piles of stuff to get what I want. I wouldn't go here if you are doing normal shopping...like for food or clothes. A lot of it is junk. Great for random needs like dish towels or gardening gloves that you don't want to spend a lot of cash on. And the clothes/shoes are pretty beat and tired looking even though they're not used...this is the end of the line after all...They've made their rounds through many hands by the time they get to Mardens. If you were looking for sweat pants from Target that you saw 9 years ago, this if your spot. Mardens does have great deals on larger, durable home goods like appliances, furniture and flooring. If you have a very specific look, style or brand you are searching for then this is not for you. But if you are looking for something tolerable and at a discounted price then try it out. We bought a a reasonable looking sofa for $600. We needed something in a flash that would be cheap, last at least a year and preferably not ugly or used. Our needs were met. Marden's also has great deals on flooring. Again, you can't get your first choice but if you're looking for something neutral and fairly durable, this will work great. Cheap prices on carpeting and installation. Pros: Appliances, flooring, open fairly late (for Maine), lots of parking, install help available, cheap garden tools Cons: No delivery (you will need to bring a truck) I'm not into it generally but if you're all about the thrill of the hunt when it comes to shopping, this place is for you! It looks a little intimidating at first because there's so much random things everywhere but if you sift through you'll definitely find something worth buying and get a bang for your buck. considering it being a junk store theres some imperfections like some of the boxes are dented and ugly but the actual product is the real deal. read more

Yes, Marden's looks really ickky from the road. And inside isn't much better looking. But... HELLO... they sell salvage! It's not Filene's. This is a place for bargain hunters! You won't find what you want every week (it's just not that kind of place). But, if you sign up for their emails and check the fliers you would be surprised at the occasional treasures to be had. Recently they had a shipment of 'Maine Cottage Furniture'. Occasionally some great name clothing (I have purchased some lovely Talbots things there, Bob Mackey too. Joan and David, Bjorn, and Rockport shoes, Mainly, though, I shoot down to the back right corner of the store where the fabric department is. Again, it's a hit-or-miss hunt, but the upholstery fabric is always a great bargain! Over $50 to $100+ dollar-a-yard fabric for $8 per yard (example). And once in a while the most exquisite trims! (I'd love to know where they came from). On another visit, I was thrilled with a find of clasps, rings and pre-cut leather pieces used to make purses, and that is exactly what I did with them. It's a great place for quilting fabric too. A really large selection with much better prices than, say, JoAnn's Fabric (whose prices seem to have gone through the roof, and quality through the floor). When you go to Marden's, keep an open mind about shopping. Some days are triumphant and others a bust. .....but... Isn't that what a treasure hunt should be? P.S. I haven't shopped the other locations, but am told that the merchandise is actually better at the other stores (particularly Portland). I will trek up there one day soon. read more

Just went to the furniture part of Mardens. Needed a new mattress, stood around the mattress department and not one employee came to see if we needed help, but stood around the check out and had a good laugh! So before you go to the Mardens furniture store in Sanford, rethink it!! read more

I come from Massachusetts where we had Building 19. I loved that store. Marden's is the same thing. I love just going in and browsing around. You never know what you're going to find. I personally don't go in looking for high-end items. I go looking for something I need for the house and such and can usually get what I need here at wicked cheap prices. Nothing wrong with that. Like anything, the store isn't for everyone so if you're one of those people, just don't go in anymore. But don't knock it. Just sayin' read more

I don't have a lot of time to devote to shopping and hunting for items, so this store does not work for me. I also don't have time to return items because of defects. Most of the stuff is unnecessary items with a price "too good to resist." Lots of seconds and expired items. Good for those who don't mind pawing through yard sales. read more

This store is a godsend. They routinely have high-end, name brand housewares and clothing. I have gone here on several occasions and paid $8 for a pair of designer jeans. I have also bought name brand cosmetic products for a fraction of what they would have cost in the regular stores. If you're re-decorating a room or looking to dress well on the cheap you can't beat mardens. And their furniture store next door has amazingly low prices on furniture to the point that i'm driving up from boston when I move next month to buy new furniture. I have been shopping at Mardens for over 20 years. It is a salvage store located only in Maine. The reason the prices are so great is 'because' of their locations. They go into place that are low in rent so that 'we the customers' can get better prices. I don't care what the store looks like from the outside. I am interested in what is on the inside. I have gotten so many bargans over the years. Anywhere from furniture to flooring to fabric. I purchased a $300.00 outside light for a fraction of the cost. I had 'real wood' flooring installed by Mardens for half the cost from a 'big lot' store. The man had to cut it around an oval brick fireplace and it was perfect. The price for the fabric is fantastic.The fabric is now located on the left side of the Sanford store in the front. They have knitting materials and other craft products. The Sanford location has two stores. On the right side of the plaza is the one that has the fabric and anything else you could be looking for. OR not looking for. :) The store on the left has furniture, bedding, appliances and flooring including area rugs, rugs for wall to wall, tiles, linoleum. Just about everything.
