This is a total throwback to Detroit s working class roots. The food is no fuss. The place is a locals spot where the servers know the patrons. I'll admit I had no idea my hamburger would come on a hotdog bun and was a bit perplexed. Of course the flavor was solid. It's a traditional Detroit style slider just in another shape. Heads up though- it's cash only. I rarely have cash but I'm grateful I did today. The breakfast menu seems legit. We will try next time. Prices are really good. read more

It's almost like stepping through a door into the past. The place is set up lunch counter style with a central grill surrounded by the counter. The decor probably hasn't been updates likely since the 50's, but the food is good and it's cheap. I quite enjoyed the cheeseburger and fries. The staff were friendly and took good care of us. They only take cash, so be prepared for that. Will make this a regular stop. read more

A part of me wants this place to remain a secret and to not write this spot a review. However, I cant rest knowing that this place has been around since 1929 and only has 19 reviews. This is definitely a blue collar type of place, surrounded by buildings and factories, its only open from 8 to 4 Mon- Sat and closes at 2 on Sundays. The fact its been around so long with those hours tells you that they get enough business. One wouldnt even think to stop by here for a delicious unique steak burger and some of the best chili fries ive ever had. It is DIVEY. But very clean. There are horseshoe counters, a small prep area in the middle, and a small kitchen in the back. There is one waitress, one prep/ dish person and a cook. The meat is freshly ground, shaped into a hot dog, and grilled. The lettuce and tomato are chopped and brought to you. The pickles and onions are pre chopped and served in community bowls, you just pass them around the counter to the other people. The fries are crispy, The chili is with beans and is like a chili gravy. It was so good. The hot dog was cooked perfect and was nice and firm, it had to be beef. I wish they werent 2.50 cuz i would eat 3 in a sitting. But i need fries and a burger too. Haha. Its a great, small, quiet little place. I hope it stays around, who knows if ill be able to make it back soon, but now its going to be a goal of mine. read more

I was originally hesitant to come here based on its location, but I'm sure glad I did. One of the most unique restaurants in the Metro Detroit area. Very friendly and attentive staff. I tried one w/ bacon but the just cheese one was better. Tasted the hamburger more. The fries are superb. The type of fries you hope every diner like this has. I've been eating a Marcus for many years and at a time when there were more locations spread out around Detroit. It's quite a trip now as I live out in Livonia, but I make it there a half dozen times a year. I'm there for the Marcus Burger, always get two, and have them served one at a time so both are hot. Everything about Marcus screams blue collar. You know that their horse-shoe style counters are not only a brilliant innovation but totally unique to the restaurant. Ten people fit around one of these little horseshoes, and there's 6 of them in the diner. In their heyday, there were likely more than 60 people crammed into this approximately 20×40 room, scrambling to get a hearty lunch and head back to the factory floor. The cook yelling jokes at us, coupled with the wonderfully welcoming and pleasant waitress are part of the historic fabric and the culture that permeates and resonates from this slightly dilapidated diner. The restaurant is named after the burgers, for their distinctive rectangular shape. They are steakburgers, presumably made with ground round. The story told now is that they bought hot dog buns by mistake one day, and rather than getting new buns, they shaped their burgers to fit the buns. Of course, this tale stuck, and through ownership changes nobody knows the real story any longer (in this case, myth may be more important than truth). There are several varieties and combinations of burgers, none of them more than $3.25. They are cooked in a vat of oil, and then smothered in chili, or cheese, or nothing. They're served on a freshly steamed hot dog bun. The patty itself is good, not overseasoned, juicy and beefy in a lot of good ways. It doesn't soak through the bun, but the juices definitely drip into your mouth. They are cooked all the way through, but not overcooked, and you would be crazy to ask the cook to leave it in a little less long. The american cheese blankets the burger nicely, coats every bite, and makes you appreciate the American Whey. I've only been to this place one time (thanks to my cousins for taking me). Yes, it's in kind of a weird spot in Detroit (close to Hamtramck), but don't let that deter you. I recommend it for anyone who wants a different kind of hamburger, at a true old neighborhood favorite. They are famous for their "Marcus Burgers" which are actually flat hamburger patties served in a hot-dog bun. Our waitress brought us heaping bowls of relish and onion as a garnish. It was delish. The burgers themselves are cooked in a grill/fryer contraption in the middle of the dining area, so you can watch the magic happen. Speaking of the dining area, it added to the uniqueness of the Marcus Burger. All seating is a "belly up to the lunch counter" arrangement, but instead of a straight counter, it was all "U" shaped. Awesome. The waitresses behind the counter have been there for many years, and are very friendly. When I was there, a whole bunchof poeple came in, some to eat, some with carryout, but everyone was definatley enjoying the food. Me and my family are regulars at this place and would never stop coming in there. The food is ALWAYS good,hot, and fast even when they are busy. The marcus birger that everyone mentioned is as good as they all say it is. Yes it might look differant than your usual hamburger cause this one comes on a hot dog bun but dont let that fool ya. On top of great food the service is nice and friendly and you feel like home when you come in there.
