I've been here several times for their great coffee (I always get a soy latte) but had one of their…read morepies finally and OH WOW was it delish. I had the vegan tempeh and lentil bolognese pie, but they also do a vegan curried pumpkin pie that I'm eager to try ASAP. Very nice flaky buttery crust. You can get either of the pies to take away for a dollar cheaper than dining in (that's what I did). They have other food, too, and bread to take home, but I haven't tried it. Service here is always friendly and relatively fast. The atmosphere is cheerful but there's not much seating inside so it definitely feels like more of a take-away joint than a sit-down cafe, unless you sit out front on a nice sunny day. Also, you have to walk through the kitchen to get to the toilet, which is a bit awkward. I think this place would benefit hugely from a different fit-out, especially if they managed to get a courtyard in there, to make it a bit more welcoming for people who want to linger over their food and coffee. Nevertheless, one of the best cafes in the area.

Sourdough Kitchen is at it's heart, a bakery. Yes, it has tables and chairs. Yes, you can sit there…read moreand read your paper, order beverages and eat their wares. It's even child-friendly. That said, it's worthwhile remembering that Sourdough Kitchen is not a cafe. Coffee and such things are not their core product. With this in mind, the cafe experience isn't as great as it could be. Their bready delights however, are luscious. My husband is a huge fan of their buttery croissants filled with ham and cheese. When I'm prepared to take the gluten risk, their spelt loaves are doughy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. I deeply suspect they fill their jam with crack too. It's the only explanation I can think of for it just being so incredibly tasty and moreish. If you're prepared to play coffee roulette, by all means give it a go - some days it's great, some days it's... well, bloody awful. Whatever you do though, don't leave without something freshly baked. In most cases the bread is still warm from the oven for that warm goodness feeling.

Its good, trust me…read more The bread was crunchy like the one in ratatouille, the meat was meat and the veggies were veggies. This used to be my secret local spot that barely anyone knew about and now people heard of it and its a long ass line but hey, sharing is caring. Am i right?

In my opinion, Nhu Lan is the best place for Banh Mi in Victoria particularly for their mixed ham…read more(thit nguoi) because their pate is amazing. Let's not forget they are well known for their baguettes which are crunchy on the outside and fluffy soft yet slightly sweet on the inside. If you've been to Hoi An or Da Nang in Vietnam, then you'll enjoy the baguettes here. Besides the mixed ham banh mi, I also love their bbq kebab and tofu banh mi. Once in a while, I'll get their french sticks with pate and mayonnaise. I love their pate and mayonnaise so much that sometimes I buy it to takeaway in a separate container so I can spread on my bread on the next day. Other note worthy items include their Banh Pate Chaud, Banh Tieu (Vietnamese Hollow Doughnuts) and Vietnamese creme caramel Flan. You'll easily get your banh mi between $4-5 depending on what you include/add in banh mi. I think it's ridiculously that there are places that specialise in banh mi and charge $7 plus. Banh Mi was designed as a quick and cheap food for breakfast or lunch. The best time to get banh mi or bread at this place is between morning till 12:30pm. During this time, their baguette tends to be the fresher and crunchiest. If you decide to buy their bread on itself own (including the Hollow Doughnut), I suggest you eat it on the day unless you plan to toast it the next day. There are few other favourite places I like to eat banh mi, but this place always delivers consistently yummy banh mi.

There are a select few (small) tables for you to sit at and have your espresso with a delicious biscotti whilst you read a paper; or you may just want to sit back and watch the steady stream of clientele come in for their cannoli fix and pick up their pre-ordered desserts. Which ever way you choose to enjoy this place, you will walk out with tantalised taste buds and surprisingly relaxed. Heads up, the coffee here is pretty good too. As a child growing up in the North West I had my fair share of Cannoli and continental cakes and I have to say I was never a big fan of the slightly soggy cannoli shell filled with sickly sweet custard, this is saying something as I am quite the sweet tooth. So fast forward 15 years and here I am in Footscray and I thought I would roll the Cannoli dice again and WOW what an awesome surprise it was. Freshly filled in store with beautiful ricotta filling I fell in love with the crispy shell and delicious filling. Since then I have to say I have had a bit of an ongoing love affair with the family at T.Cavallaro who are always amazingly friendly, have yummy new biscuits to try and ice chocolates/coffees to have in their small shop. I adore it here, it makes me feel like I am sitting in an italian loungeroom having a chat and a snack. It really is a tiny bit of italy in the food bowl that is Footscray :)
