Every major city usually has that one definitive farmers market that vloggers will tell you is…read moreessential to visit, for example, London has Borough Market, New York City has Union Square Greenmarket, and LA has the Original Farmers Market. This one is Montreal's and deservedly so as it covers over 30,000 square feet in the city's atmospheric Little Italy neighborhood. Quite easily, Jamie W and I took the 55 city bus to get here and were immediately taken by the abundant tables of fresh produce sourced directly from local regional farms (Photo 8). However, fruits and vegetables are far from the only goods sold here. There are also butchers, fishmongers, artisanal cheese shops, bakeries, spice merchants, and maple goods purveyors. Since we already filled up on bagels on the way over, we really didn't take advantage of the variety of dining options and open-air food stalls. Pretty much everything looked appetizing, especially the lobster toast and the Moroccan pastries (Photo 6), but we only had room to sip a couple of refreshing C$10.50 Mocktails Pina Colada (Photo 13). Expect to spend at least a couple of hours here. The best is not only everything is made with local produce, but it's also all hand made, hence the name of the place. Outside of the special brunch, there's a lot of other offering. There's more then what I photograph and everything look very good. If you want some sugar shack in city experience, do go before April 19th. I think it's only on weekend though. The staff was incredibly sweet, calm, helpful, friendly, just good thing to say about them. Didn't seems stress or overworked. I today's world, 41$ for this is a steal you can't miss.

The Slightly Longer Version: I can't believe this opened up in 2017 and only in 2025 did I discover it. It's in the lobby of the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel. It's an upscale market with artisan items. They sell oils, vinegars, sauces and spreads. It's also part restaurant with different stations reminiscent of the Mövenpick that was in downtown Toronto (but has since closed down). They have a pizza station, a crepe station, a bakery and more. Prices are what you would expect at The Queen Elizabeth Hotel. Review #155 (2025)

From fruits and vegetables to Wagyu beef and foie gras, they have it all for the at-home chef. The Long Version: My husband and I love Farmers' Markets, so while planning our trip to Laval, I marked Marché Public 440 as one of the places for us to check out. We went in May so the outdoors section was open. I doubt it's open year-round, like the indoors section. The outdoors section had lots of affordably priced fruits and vegetables. We ended up getting 5 containers of blackberries for $1 each. We also got 2 packs of baby cucumbers. Each pack had 6 cucumbers and they were $2 each or 2 packs for $3. The indoors section is significantly pricier, but they have gourmet items. They had expensive cuts of meats, gourmet cheeses and artisan chocolates. They had a few eateries too, which ranged in prices. It's a fun place to walk around. Lots of free parking in their private parking lot. Review #97 (2025)

Vraiment pratique!

You can visit their creamery, but I had a chance to visit their Jean-Talon Market location - the cheese with the green label refers to the milk of the animals grazing in the mountain pastures during the growing season; the label that has a snow-covered landscape refers that the milk is from the animals that were fed on hay during the winter months. All the cheeses are aged for 2-4 months in the creamery's underground cave and comes with a natural rind; pressed cheeses, blue vein cheeses, fresh, cheeses, brined cheeses, soft rind cheeses, and even other dairy products (such as yogurts, sheep's milk, and cream) are offered. I thought the cheeses were rich and creamy with a subtle hint of acidity from the sheep's milk - they're pretty delicious, and I'm sure you'll be able to find a version that you'll like! If you're in the market to purchase some sheep, they also have ewes and rams for sale (Canadian Livestock Records Corporation-registered); they also have woollen knit socks, comforters, pillows, berets, and even raw fleece for customized spinning/dye-ing. +fromagerie located in the Jean-Talon market +cow & ewe's milk semi-firm cheeses :D +located across the gelato place

Since arriving in Montréal, I've been on the hunt for some milk from grass-fed animals. Cows, goats, buffalo, sheep - just give me milk from some kind of ruminant that eats grass instead of grain. Thanks to La Moutonnière, I've found it. From professed 100% Happy Sheep, La Moutonnière makes and sells milk, butter, and several types of cultured cheeses and yogurts, all from grass-and-hay fed sheep on their farm in Quebec. I tried their dairy products for the first time this week and am very impressed. Of course it's a bit more expensive than your industrial Québon/Kraft Foods versions but you know what you're getting in this case. La Moutonnière also sells wool, soap, and very reasonably priced lamb meat (I'm guessing those particular lambs aren't 100% happy sheep). The staff are wonderful too - I asked for sheep butter today and was told they were out. About five minutes later, they sought me out in a completely different section of the market to let me know they'd located some butter for me. A great first impression. Find them at the southeast corner of the Marché Jean-Talon, just across from Qui Lait Cru.
