Note that they don't take online bookings. Instead, you have to call their desk, which was fine by me. The only complaint I had could be chalked up to user error -- the heater was a bit too powerful for the room size. Highly recommended.

Plus, it seemed like a family run place and the woman who took my reservation was very nice. Reception is in the house next door to the motel, it seems to be the owner's house. We arrived to find a great little motel - maybe the cleanest one I've ever stayed in. The room kind of looked like a tiny little ski lodge. They had a little binder of tons of stuff to do in the area, wireless internet, tv, mini firdge and a coffeemaker. It was great! Just what I was looking for. Within ten minutes of arriving to the motel we were off to Trout River Brewing for pizza! We left early in the morning so we didn't do anything in the area, but it seems there's lots to do, so I think we might come back. This is a great place to go away for the weekend on a budget! PS. The Yelp listing says this place is closed. But, it isn't. I stayed here in February 2010.

All rooms are up a narrow center staircase with a full bath in the hall. They have a spa bath on the first floor that is pictured here in Photos. A large tiled accessible shower, jetted tub, tall windows which can be opened and ample towels and supplies. Of course, breakfast was a fresh two course meal with Vermont coffee in a room with a view of the patio and gardens.

I enjoyed it so much that I booked the entire B & B suite for a weekend to come back with the family. The suite is three bedrooms and very affordable for a weekend get-a-way. The back wing of this old farmhouse is half cozy living room/kitchen and half modernized greenhouse. Downstairs in the updated section is a wonderful bathroom with large jacuzzi tub and walk in shower with three (yes, 3) shower heads - though the switching valve only let's you run two at a time. Plus the radiant floor tiles makes me want to just lie in the sun along with Phoenix the resident friendly cat. Upstairs are three cozy bedrooms with wonderful Vermont landscape views and lot's of books for browsing. Outside there are pastures and trails, a big old barn, sheep and a llama. When we were there in the fall the llama was just wandering around the yard as it had been fighting with the ram, so Jay just let it out to get a little breathing room. So I woke up in the morning and watched the llama on patrol around the house. Jay and Jude, like so many B & B owners (a special breed) are friendly and entertaining. They are anxious to be helpful and quick to recommend good restaurants, places to hike, and other things to do. And the breakfasts, ahh, the breakfasts... You have to stay at least two nights just so that you can get more of their good food. fresh fruit cup, maple smoked bacon, maple walnut scones, asparagus soufflé, baked apples with maple syrup, blueberry muffins, light and fluffy waffles ... I went to bed each night excited to wake up and smell whatever was cooking. None of the rooms have a private bath, but renting the whole space makes that happen. No cellular phone service (well sometimes one bar) but good wifi. Close to hiking, X country skiing, and snowmobile trails. Close to Montpelier. A couple of really nice restaurants in the area: Claire's, Positive Pie, Rainbow Sweets.

I did find housing, 50 minutes away, which is the only reason I am leaving two stars instead of one. Very upset. I won't be trying to stay here again. Heed this warning if you want reliable housing.

We couldn't feel more lucky to have had our wedding here. My husband and I met in Vermont, but we live in New York City. We knew it was going to be complicated planning a wedding from afar, and we simply could NOT have done it without Christy. "She is worth her weight in gold!" my Dad said at one point during the planning process, and boy is he correct! We had a million questions, and for every one Christy had an answer that made perfect sense and calmed our nerves. She is an expert at this and has endless brilliant ideas about how to make the party flow. When we were clueless about how to make something happen, she took the lead. And when we had a particular idea -- a maple creemee truck, bringing a jazz band from NYC, a table with thousands of cookies -- she let us lead and helped make it happen. She even helped find a basketball court in town for my husband and his groomsmen to play a game! Above and beyond is an understatement. On top of that, the venue is spectacular. You can tell Christy and her wonderful husband, Gary have put love and thought into every corner. We threw our entire weekend right here -- a welcome party the night before, yoga on the grounds the morning of, a ceremony on the stunning hill, and of course an incredibly fun reception in the cocktail pavilion and barn. Our guests from New York City, Ohio, California, Connecticut all raved about how special it was to celebrate here, and my husband and I didn't even have to leave the grounds once we arrived on Friday morning! I'll never forget the feeling as each of our friends and family arrived at the Alerin Barn and the enthusiasm and fun that abounded the entire weekend. We wanted our wedding to be a warm, sophisticated, Vermont-y, special PARTY. Christy and Gary helped make it real at every turn. And the breakfast they make you each morning is an added delight. We can't thank you enough, Christy and Gary! We will forever be grateful and can't wait to visit our favorite place again in the future. Have your wedding here!! Cannot recommend it enough.

Driving to the Alerin Barn makes one a little skittish about its usefulness as a wedding venue…read more You climb and climb a mountain road where deerskins hang in the trees and cars sit on blocks in yards. But when you enter the world of Alerin Barn and the Keeper on Horned Pout Pond, you leave all of that behind. The property is a world unto itself-- a fully refinished farm house, a gorgeously restored barn, a pond-- and, in a meadow up on the hill (a short cart ride away, but walkable), an outdoor chapel for wedding ceremonies. The farmhouse has ample room for both halves of the couple to dress in, and a few rooms for guests to stay. The chapel has rough-hewn wooden benches and an arbor under some trees. When I photographed a wedding there the staff had brought lemonade service up for the guests. The property owners have also made an adorable cart that pulls behind a tractor to carry your guests up to the meadow where the chapel is. The barn itself is well redone with room for tables on both floors and a walk-out patio on the second floor. The DJ booth is on the second floor and overlooks the dance floor. There are patio tables by the pond and a floating dock that you can walk out onto. The staff is wonderful (both the in house and hired in staff) and the owners are personable and very, very capable. The wedding I photographed there also featured a fireworks display over the pond, it was spectacular.
