Yes the portions are small, but much of the food is left on the plate. The only clean plate I saw was mine and one other patient's. Let Phyllis B take her relative to the Rehab across from hospital and then see how she feels. But then my sister has been in 4 rooms in less than 4 months. The first room had a good nurse, the 3rd had a good nurse, but the 4th has less than desireable staff. Canterbury was always good to my sister.

The food portions are small, if a resident requests a piece of toast they are denied. There are consistent punishments of residents who unintentionally make small mistakes. The food is wonderful, and residents can make special menu requests (e.g. my mom loves cantaloupe - so they'll bring some in for her if it's not on the menu).They have activities - but no pressure to join, and outings like shopping and concerts. They offer a private pay spend down to medicare and automated billing. There's only about 20 residents there which is not as overwhelming as some places. Pets can visit (but not live there), and residents can head out with family or friends anytime they like. It's in a beautiful country atmosphere but 10 minutes from Essex/Tafts corners, and 15 from Burlington. We've struggled with mom's expensive care for years and feel we've made the right choice with Sterling House for so many reasons.

I searched all over Vermont for a good fit, and I finally found it at Sterling House. The management was wonderful to work with and really made the process easier. Once my mother moved in, management and the staff were always just a phone call away to answer questions. My mother loved it there. She considered the staff her friends and was always talking about them. I never once doubted that my mother was getting amazing care in a great environment. The Sterling House is like a real home - it's small and cozy. The dining room feels like one we would have in our own home. Their rooms are quite large and have nice windows to let the sun shine in. It is the small touches that meant a lot to my mom - them making her favorite meal on her birthday, getting a Christmas stocking, things like that. For my brother and I, it was the immediate access to staff and management. If we ever had a question or concern, no matter how small, they were always great about responding. The review by Martha C is really sad to me. I have NEVER seen anyone scolded, and if she had been, my mother certainly would have told me. I also take issue with the staff not interacting with the residents, as that is not my experience at all. My brother and I visited my mother all the time. There is always staff around interacting, playing games, listening to stories, etc. The staff are very involved. My mother's room was also always clean. They do a great job coming in and helping them. In fact, my mother's room was far neater and cleaner than it ever was at home! Overall, I really can't recommend Sterling House enough. Putting a parent into assisted living was one of the hardest things I have ever done. They helped me through the whole process, and were kind and understanding. They were always there while she was a resident to answer questions. And when my mother passed, they were a shoulder to cry on and incredibly supportive. The management and staff are just wonderful. The care is great. The staff really care about the residents, which makes all the difference.

They leave their elderly paitents alone in a room for hours especially if they are blind and unable to walk! Serving rotten food where they cut the rotten parts of food off and still serve it to them! They are rude, highly unprofessional, they had one lady pass away supposedly from starvation! The type of care is highly poor, they only want money out of the families and could care less of their paitents! Had i known what i do now i would have never ever in a billion years have left my loved one there! I warn others do not leave your loved ones at this wretched establishment!!! They only care about bleeding your wallet dry and scam you out of your loved ones life insurances! I wouldn't be surprised if half the staff aren't secretly killing their patients off and stealing personal items from the families!

I am writing to let you folks know that this is not a place where you would want to put your folks…read more My mother was complaining about an ankle that was hurting so bad that she thought it was broken the nurses and the staff told her that she it was not and that for her to get up and start walking .it hurt her so bad she would cry finally they took her to the hospital and the doctor said that her ankle was broken and how could they have missed that. then my mother was complaining that she thought she had pneumonia but again the nurses and the staff said she did not have pneumonia my mother was rushed to the hospital within days Died of pneumonia with some complications I want to thank the people at Mansfield place for the demise of my mother.
