First try of local pastéis de nata!
Manteigaria is often ranked among the best Portuguese egg custard tarts. This location is conveniently within view of Clerigos Tower. It was busy but we didn't wait long in line for the decadent treat that's just €1.50 each. We saw a cohort of pastry chefs busy handling making them and then taking a batch out of the oven.
We followed the local way of eating the treat by dusting sugar and cinnamon on top. This pair of ingredient containers are often used to sprinkle and add extra flair to the normal creamy texture. The flaky pastry is thinly layered and crisp to accentuate the caramelized cream. For a more exceptional bite, it's better to ask for it warm.
You can also enjoy pasteis de nata here by the countertop with coffee or wine. Another option is take the treat to go. Locals don't usually eat while walking so it would be awkward to stick out like that as a tourist. We weren't blown away here but finished here before heading on our way.
Skip it or hit it? Manteigaria is overhyped but you can still pop by for that consistent treat. read more
