Stumbled upon this place right after checking into hotel. A small casual Japanese izakaya restaurant with a good selection of authentic meals, mainly udon noodles for lunch. This was an extremely satisfying lunch served in the beautiful ambiance of their patio. The service was wonderful - quick and attentive. I ordered the Tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet) and a hefeweizen beer on this beautiful spring day. The attention to detail in the dishes is evident the minute it hits the table. The presentation of the meal is exquisitely appetizing. The pork cutlet main even came with miso soup, a bowl of rice and a salad. The pork cutlet was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside - perfectly prepared. But the star of the show for me was the rice. It was super sticky and delicious all by itself. I could eat bowls of that stuff for hours on end without any sauce or supplementary foods mixed in. Whole meal cost 15€. I will definitely be back! read more

Amazing food at a great price! Really enjoyed the overall experience. We reserved a table (which I recommend for lunch because it got quite full) for two and were seated in a more private section with beautiful Kabuki masks and decor that made us feel like we were at a mom and pop place in Japan. We were immediately served complementary Sesame tea that was delicious and it got refilled regularly by the very nice servers. We ordered from the lunch menu, one ramen & riceball lunch and one tempura nabeyaki udon lunch with 2 riceballs. The food was relatively quickly, about 10-15 minutes after ordering. Everything was super good and very reasonably priced. The Ramen lunch was 11€ and the Nabeyaki lunch was 15€. Very delicious, high quality food and we will definitely be back to try more things on the menu! read more

Very nice authentic Japanese place. Good for small groups or just casual dinner. The place is relatively small and gets packed very fast. The peak hour seem to be 6-8 (right after it opens). Then it gets slightly less crowded around 8:30 or so. They have nice selection of decently priced sake and a few beers (including of course Kirin). Appetizers section is extensive! Lots to chose from. My favorite is Japanese eggplant with miso souse. Sushi is very good, but slightly smaller compared to what you'd get in Japan or say good San Francisco sushi places (that is why rating is 4/5). Overall, great place, conveniently located next to Marriott. Will definitely go there again! read more

First off, let me start with the fact that I'm a huge fan of izakayas and their more traditional take on Japanese food and Japanese diner atmosphere. Sure they have ramen and sushi, but there are so many other things this place does well. The customer service is top notch, they have a great selection of sakes and shochu , amongst a variety of Japenese beers and whiskey, so you know that you'll always have a good time when you come here. The portions are just the right size, not too filling, so yhos encourages a lot of sampling of the menu. If you're new to Japanese food or have only had those typical dragon rolls and maki, I'd strongly recommend coming with a group of friends and just trying something new. We had a mix of yakitori with shishito peppers, salted chicken heart and beef, fish jaw, soft shell crab, fresh oysters, chicken karaage, two types of grilled mackerel, mochi ice cream, and a bottle of sake washed down with a lot of ice cold beers. Definitely a must for any fans of Japanese food. The ambience is very warm and friendly, very busy and overall very stimulating. This is a hidden gem and well worth going out of your way for this experience. 5/5 for an izakaya in Germany. read more

Sitting in an authentic Japanese Izakaya in Frankfurt Germany suddenly gave me the chills. A story for another time I guess. As for the restaurant, it was one of the best. The atmosphere is authentic Japanese, where you will personally experience the close-up and very close quarters personal space. If you don't like tight places this is not your place. The food is authentic and well prepared, while the service is attentive. I enjoyed this place thoroughly and Highly Highly recommend it - Ku-da-sai. Don't forget to try the grill. Great quality Japanese food. You can taste the freshness! We had Sushi, sashimi salmon, the winter bowl 'all in one', grilled squid and gyōza with chicken and vegetables. All well season and cooked. Gyōza was my favorite. Never tasted Wasabi this fresh! Salmon sashimi was great and the squid well prepared. Soup had chicken, vegetables, tofu and fish. Broth was light and tasted good. I've been living a 1-minute walk away from this place for 3.5 years now and but had yet to eat there. (OK, we ordered take-out sashimi there once before but i don't count that!) Last Friday, the day had finally arrived and we met up with a few fellow Yelpers to enjoy a TGIF dinner. Here is my run-down: Interior/atmosphere/deco: 2.5 stars It's so so, but did not blew me away. They tried to create an "Asian atmosphere" by installing bamboo matts but I don't think it really worked. Their outside patio with the Asian garden elements does a much better job (but it was too cold and dark to sit outside that day). It also feels a bit cramped. Service: 3 stars Friendly but slow. Although all of us ordered at the same time, the food arrived separately and there were 10-15 minutes breaks in-between which meant some of us had already finished their orders when others just got their sushi. Food: 3.5 stars The miso soup was on point! Exactly how I like it. 5 stars The spicy tuna roll was the best I have tried in Germany so far, but still doesn't live up to US standards. 3.5 stars The salmon maki was decent, but did not blew me away. I definitely ate better fish during my sushi class at Makan 4 days earlier. 3 stars Price: 3 stars Not the cheapest place. For that kind of money I had expected more. I read that this place had great reviews on here and needed a place to eat last minute. So i went to Mangetsu. I was highly impressed with the quality and freshness of the food I ordered. As someone who grew up near the ocean and has an appreciation for fresh seafood, I'm always hesitant eating sushi or fish in certain parts of Europe. Especially tuna or fish that isn't really a local fish. This izakaya style establishment has proved me wrong. I ordered a typical plate that consisted of two rolls and seven nigiri. I'm not a fan of wasabi, and a few pieces of the nigiri had a little too much, but for the most part, everything was delivered fresh and was extremely delicious. It was nothing fancy, and I'm curious to try some of their ramen sometime, but I would definitely make a conscious effort to return just for the mix platter that I had. The price was 15 Euros for the two rolls (one was salmon and one was tuna) and seven nigiri of assorted fish. It did not fill me up, but sushi never really does. My biggest compliment to the place was not actually the food, but rather the customer service. We were greeted with smiles upon walking through the door, and the waiter, a man around twenty-five, was so friendly that that alone would make me return for seconds. So happy to have found real Japanese food in Frankfurt! I'm from Vancouver (the land of great sushi) and also a sushi addict. Being in Europe for 2 weeks made me really miss a good sushi meal. We found Mangetsu on tripadvisor and I was really pleasantly surprised! Try to make reservations ahead of time though because it gets busy. I couldn't get a reso the first night I tried but it might have been because of the book fair. Sashimi was fresh and they have a pretty extensive menu. The O-toro was so melt in your mouth deliciousness! We also had the sukiyaki and that was pretty good as well. Frankfurt is full of good eats but this gem was one of my favorites :) read more

Maybe I hyped this restaurant up in my mind too much, but I was a bit disappointed. As a Japanese American, I've grown up eating Japanese food and I crave it often during my semester in Europe, so while I was in Frankfurt, I found Mangetsu with pretty good reviews on Yelp. The food was average and the prices were steep. The waitress spoke to my boyfriend and I in Japanese the whole time. The service was slow even when the waitress and waiters weren't serving anyone else. We ordered a five stick kushiyaki set (10.80€), geese meat (~11€), tuna yamakake (8.90€), and a bowl of rice (2€). It was also disappointing that the taiyaki I was looking forward to for dessert was not available, and the second option I had of getting the green tea mochi was shut down by the waitress who worked there. She told me herself that it was not good! Maybe it was our food choices that weren't good, though. The experience wasn't horrible, but I wouldn't voluntarily go again. One thing that was nice of them though was the fact that we were 15-20 mins late to our 8 pm reservation, but they still had our seats reserved for us! read more

I even spoke in Japanese but seemed to not make a difference It took 10mins after seating for drink order and 15 more minutes to get two beers. UPDATE Jan 26: So, after about 12 - 13 times of going to Mangetsu, I really do not have anything bad to say about their menu. Everything we've tried has been excellent - karaage, jidori, mangetsu roll, kani roll, mini chirashi, kamogrill, unadon, etc. We've also discovered that the restaurant has a seasonal menu it changes out, which can be regarded negatively among those who are always seeking their one favorite dish from that menu. However, for the regulars like my husband and I, it's quite refreshing to be able to choose something new all the time. Otherwise, we could potentially tire of the choices although that would be difficult to do with the variety of food on the menu. I also prefer this because there is so much more to Japanese cuisine than just sushi. Since our first day visiting there, we've learned to make a reservation every time we wanted to eat there, even for the weekdays. The reason: It is not only popular among the Japanese community but also the knowing Germans and non-Japanese people who have a taste for authentic cuisine from Japan. The staff is always incredibly friendly and it is also part of the reason why we keep coming back. Did I say in my first review of the restaurant that we would be making frequent reservations? =) --------- Old First-Timer Review: Having had bad experiences with less than stellar so-called 'Japanese' restaurants in Frankfurt and vicinity, Mangetsu was an unexpected and pleasant surprise for me. My husband and I decided to try it out tonight. We were asked if we made reservations. Unfortunately, we did not but they offered to take us in anyway upon the agreement that we were able to leave within an hour. 45 minutes into the meal, the guests who reserved nearly the entire place started arriving. Despite that, the staff remained friendly with us and we didn't feel rushed at all. We received our food rather quickly and were actually out of the restaurant within the hour. We ordered gyouza, the Mikazuki sushi set (4 nigiri sushi, 8 makizushi), tamagoyaki, wakame soba, and yaki onigiri. All dishes were exceptionally delicious and reasonably price compared to other Japanese restaurants in Frankfurt. Our tab came to about 34 euros. Let's just say, we'll be making reservations at Mangetsu quite frequently. read more

I'll be honest im struggling to review this place. Ive been here 3 times, once I was just meeting a friend after her work function there and just grabbed a beer while I waited for her to finish up so really didn't have much of an opinion on the place other than it looked pretty decent. Eventually a year later I ended up going here after needing a place to grab some food with my girlfriend. I cant fault my experience this time it was great the food was tasty and filled me up sufficiently although I wont lie it was a little bit costly. The final time I ate here was in the warm heat of summer 2015, Germany was scorching... too hot in my opinion far far too hot, our apartment became a sauna at the mere notion of turning on the stove to cook, so we headed out for sushi. Having enjoyed this place before my girlfriend and I decided to head over to grab some of that tasty sushi we remembered, the sushi was there but not how we remembered. The whole dining experience was flat and dull, not helped by a barrage of wasps coming for our dinner, the food was dull, the waitress was making mistakes all over the place, our drink order was forgotten about and then wrong. the food was blah and not enjoyable, then our food was priced wrong. Personally this flat experience has really put me off returning here as the cost of it is not worth it. I suggest checking the cost of things you order prior just to avoid any nasty surprises. read more

By far the best sashimi I've had in the 4+ years I've been in Germany. We had got a for an appetizer and each meal came with a side salad that had the perfect amount of just about everything. My husband got sushi set A and I got the sashimi meal. It's about an hour drive but completely worth the traffic Oh, and we had our two children (ages 2 yr and 9 mo). Having lived in Tokyo, I am a keen enthusiast for Japanese food of all types. This izakaya has never yet disappointed and today was my fifth visit. The staff are friendly and keen to help you select the best dishes. There are a number of set menus for those who don't want to order many individual dishes from the varied traditional menu. The sushi and sashimi platters are for me a particular highlight, all freshly prepared at the sushi bar next to the main entrance, including red snapper (tai) and yellowtail (hamachi). The yakitori, gyouza, kara-age and many other typical izakaya dishes are all of a very high quality as well. Nihhon-shu is available as well as Calpis, Kirin and Ume-shu. Together with the obligatory apfelwein of course! Fantastic authentic japanese restaurant. So many different kind of dishes which i always wanted to try. Sushi was superb and the takoyaki delicous. The fried octopus was a little bit chewy, but the breatcrumb coating made up for it. The yakitori was really juicy and tender and my wife loved the homemade rice cake dessert. They could have been more generous with the rice balls fillings, but overall this restaurant is highly recommended. I cant wait to come back again to try all the other dishes. Update: I went there for a second time with my extended family and even though I love the food, there are some cons which I like to mention. First of all, the portion sizes are too small considering the price you pay.So this is not a restaurant to get stuffed unless you order a lot. They really charge 5 euros for one prawn tempura. However, as far as I know Japanese restaurants tend to serve smaller portions compared to other Asian cuisines such as Chinese.Besides, this is supposed to be an Izakaya (japanese pub) and not a restaurant. Nevertheless, I would not come here with a big family as it is slightly expensive considering the portion sizes unless you dont mind the price. Another con is that they are a little bit understaffed as sometime you have to mention your orde 3 times until it gets served. They even forgot one order of mine and in the end, I didn't mention it anymore. The ramen set includes a bowl of ramen with pork, half of an egg, two onigiri (rice ball), a small plate of marinated jellyfish and pickled vegetables.
