My stylist was FIRED for enforcing COVID 19 requirement! Barbara has been cutting my hair for over 30 years and most recently has been working at Mane Tribe Salon. I had concerns about going back to a salon (I'm almost 60 years old with underlying health conditions), but Barbara assured me that the shop had adopted and enforces strict COVID 19 requirements for masks and social distancing. So today I went in for my appointment, and Barbara and I were the only ones in the salon. I was sitting in the first chair by the entrance door when about halfway through my cut, a woman walks in with her young daughter and neither were wearing a mask. Aware of my concerns, Barbara politely said, and I quote: "Hon, you need to wear a mask to come inside", to which the woman replied, "I was told before I didn't need to wear a mask". Barbara then pointed out the sign in the window stating "All Employees and Customers are Required to Wear Face Coverings". The woman turned around and left without saying another word. Barbara immediately asked me if I thought she sounded rude, and I said (sincerely) "absolutely not", though I did add that I believed that anyone who is anti-mask would likely take offense, no matter how nicely they are asked to put on their mask. Following my cut, as I was talking with Barbara out by her car, her phone rings and it's the shop owner Nicole, who immediately starts screaming at her about the incident. Hearing what was transpiring, I took the phone and introduced myself and explained to her exactly what had happened, and that Barbara was in no way, shape or form rude to the mask-less woman, and that she was simply protecting me. The result? Nicole continued her rant, telling Barbara to get everything that belongs to her out of the shop immediately and she never wanted to see her again. So that was my experience today at Mane Tribe Salon. In one word, deplorable. I do plan to report this incident to the Ventura County COVID 19 Compliance Hotline on Monday when they open to report this, but I felt it was important to share publicly for anyone concerned for their health and well being. read more

This was my first time in the salon and I got a horrible haircut from Katie. Long story short: stylist was distracted by her 2 year old running around and then she and the salon owner defended her work by saying the only way for layered hair to look good on straight hair is to style it and somehow it also "looks great" in a photo without styling. I asked for round long layers with long curtain bangs which is a haircut I have had for years. Because my hair is fine and straight I asked that the very bottom of my hair at the last layer to be more blunt. I also explained that I love the 90s look but I don't style my hair everyday so I need it to look good without styling it. She asked how much I wanted to take off the length and I said as much as she thought. I did not specify how long I wanted the bangs at this point because I figured she would ask before she cut them. She didn't and cut them at my cheekbones which is a length I hate and would have asked them to start at my jaw. I'm pretty sure she didn't ask because she was distracted. Her 2ish year old child was there and crawled out of his stroller about 5 minutes into the cut. She had to stop my cut several times and at one point he was started to try to open the back door. She was watching him most of the time so her focus was not on my hair. She round brushed my hair so it looked good and hid the fact that I just got a bad haircut. Tip: if you have straight hair ask for your stylist to rough dry your hair so you can actually see your cut. At this point I was stress out because of her being distracted and not asking me about my bangs and I simply forgot to ask. I was surprised she didn't do any blending or double checked any of her work but I trusted her at that point and when I checked it in the mirror it did look good from the blowout. I paid $70 for the cut and gave her a $20 tip. When I got home my hair was straight again and I could see how bad it was. Some parts were choppy and my previous layers were somewhat blended. My bangs are uneven and choppy like steps and the layers are completely uneven. I got in contact with Katie and the salon owner. Katie said that she cut it all blunt "like I asked." Again not what I asked for. They offered for me to come back to have it fixed but I explained that if it was just a style miscommunication and the haircut was even with just blunt ends I would be more than happy to come back. But it was not just a miscommunication it was a really bad haircut so I did not trust her to fix it. I said that I understand that services were rended but I don't think it's fair to charge me for such a bad cut and I would like a partial refund for the haircut. Katie did return my tip but $70 is completely unfair for something I'm going to have to pay more to have fixed. Then they both defended the cut even after I showed what my hair looked like saying that it has to be styled. When the salon owner responsed to the photos I sent (the same one here) she said "...your hair looks great. You just need to style it. For future if you don't want to style your hair I'd recommend not doing layers or curtain bangs. Curtain bangs need to be styled and trained." I've had this style of cut for 3+ years without issues. A haircut should still look good without having to style it to his the mistakes. This all happened a week ago and I have given them time to fix the situation. Katie was quick to respond but the salon owner keeps leaving my texts on read until I message again. They were both dismissive and kept throwing blame back and forth to avoid taking responsibility. Very unprofessional from start to finish both from stylist being distracted with her child to the salon owner and stylish being dismissive and avoiding any responsibility. read more

Probably the worst haircut I've had since I was a child. I gave the stylist 1 instruction do not cut my bangs above my eye brown line. Needless to say my bangs are SO short and blunt across my face; I feel like I'm 7 and my mom cut my hair in the kitchen with a bowl. I can't believe I paid 125 dollars to feel and look like this. I complained several times that the bangs were too short; she proceeded to push down on my bangs to flatten them against my forehead stating "when you do this, they are below your eyebrows" Do not go here, it's not worth your tears. I found Mary to be a lovely, charming lady and easy to talk to. Unfortunately, my hair experience was different from what I expected. I booked an appointment for a cut, base color, and highlights. During the consultation, I said I wanted to keep my existing base color (light neutral brown) and the highlight color (very light brown). There were darker bands near the top of my head, where I'd touched up my roots during shutdown. (The drugstore hair color turned out darker than what's on the model.) The smock had a V neck, which I tried to keep shut when Mary was applying the dye. After the dye had set and she washed my hair, I was surprised by how light my hair was, and how blonde the highlights were. I asked Mary if she was going to apply toner. She then mixed up some toner and applied it. When the toner was washed out, Mary remarked that the color was too ashy and needed to be redone. At that point I'd been in the salon for almost 4 hours. She trimmed my hair and applied new toner. Mary started blow-drying my hair without a diffuser, which is inappropriate for curly hairstyles. She said she had a diffuser in her car, and went out and got it. The diffuser fell off several times, and each time Mary washed it off. By then my hair was half dry, and using the diffuser didn't make much of a difference because Mary was constantly touching my hair--another no-no when drying curly hair. When she finished, I my hair was frizzy and much darker than I'd asked for. After I left the salon, I went grocery shopping. When I got home and looked in a mirror, I found noticeable stains all along the hairline, plus stains near my left eye. It was embarrassing to think I went out in public looking like that. Luckily I had stain remover at home. There's one more thing, and it's about Covid. In the 5 hours I spend in the salon, dozens of people came and went. I saw four people wearing masks: me, a workman, Mary (after I asked her to put one on), and another stylist. At one point, three consecutive wash basins were occupied. That's not proper social distancing. There are hand sanitizers at stations, but that by itself doesn't meet state Covid guidelines. I told my husband about my experience, and we agreed to wear masks at home because he is in the high-risk category. I also registered for a Covid test. read more

So I followed the amazing Kira to her new location here and I have to say - Thank you Kira! This place has a great, convenient location, easy parking, and I always feel warmly welcome here. I love the vibe here. It's upscale but in a rustic, modern way. There are places to hang out - on the patio or in the comfy couch nook. And they have these very well-made hair washing chairs that won't hurt your neck.
