My sister and I went to visit our parents in Windsor Ontario and my mom wanted to try the mandarin restaurant as she has had a good experience in another mandarin restaurant downtown. We had a reservation on Saturday for 12pm and we got seated right away. The place was clean and smelled good. The design was typical Asian but more modern than most buffet places. Upon entering, there were different areas to sit and it was huge inside. There was a sushi spot, Chinese spot, American spot, a nice dessert spread with ice cream and cakes as well. We got their green tea and jasmine tea which was fabulous. We also tried their classic martini and it was nice and strong. When we got seated, we were given warm hand towels which was a nice pleasant surprise and a nice touch. The food was as expected at a buffet but much cleaner and fresher than what I've seen. I did not give this a full 5 stars as the chicken balls were very dry along with anything that was fried and the tiramisu cake was also dry. However the service was absolutely great.

I really enjoyed the Chinese donut wrapped in rice noodle (cheung fun with youtiao) , that was probably my favorite dish. The congee had good flavor, but the meat in it tasted a little old. The siu mai were huge and definitely hit my craving. The har gow wasn't anything super special, but still decent. The chow fun was good, just could've used a bit more flavor. I also liked the black sesame balls for dessert, and I always enjoy black bean spare ribs, which were solid here too. Service was great, the young girls working there were very nice and attentive. Overall, a good, convenient dim sum spot especially if you're coming right across the border. Atmosphere felt like a homey Chinese restaurant.

We settled on many different types of dishes, and were impressed with all of them. When the beef had come out, it was still sizzling on the hot tray, which was nice to see. The beef was tender and delicious, along with the chicken, which was crispy on the outside (a nice touch). We also settled on stir-fried rice, stir-fried noodles, and green beans with beef; all of these dishes were also well-prepared and tasty. The restaurant itself was quite small however, it wasn't too crowded, which made our stay a pleasant one. Servers came over to greet us and bring our food in a timely manner; overall, a great place for authentic Chinese cuisine, with delicious food and good service.

Hubby and I laughed at how many times we zipped past the restaurant without noticing it. My husband and I both ordered the Major Tom Khatsu, which has a coconut chicken broth base. The chicken katsu pieces were the perfect level of crispy without being heavily breaded. There was also a nice little kick to the dish, which made it so, so yummy. Our friends got the Shoyu ramen with pork belly, and the Corned Beef ramen. The Shoyu dish seemed to be more enjoyable. Though we stuck with water, cans of Faygo pop seemed to be the drink offerings - other than alcoholic beverages. Areas for improvement include the waiting. Johnny Noodle King is a small place, with a main dining area and then what seems to be a bar area attached. We initially waited by the door for our table along with another small group (we were a party of four). We were then asked to go to the bar area to wait so that it would clear the door, but found it interesting how we were asked to move but not the other group. Also, we were standing away from the doormat we were not obstructing anyone's movements. The wait was long, and we asked if we could order food to the bar area (as opposed to waiting for a table). We were told 'no', yet there was a table full of patrons who were eating. There was no notification system, so our friend had to keep going to the front to see if our table was ready. Don't get me wrong; 'hooray' to Johnny Noodle King for having such great business volume. However, they need a way to manage it so that people will not be put off. Once we were seated, we did have good service from our waitstaff, and the food was very good. My husband and I plan to return to explore more of the menu. Hopefully, we can pick a time of day when waiting won't be such a big issue.

You can get $2 Stroh's, $4 Kirin draft, and 20oz Sapporo bottles for $6. The food and service were great. The only reason it's not 5 stars is becuase there is no food on their happy hour menu. Other than that m, it's a cute Detroit inspired fusion and fun to eat there.
