    Steam roll with a shrimp
    Michele C.

We came here because we were craving Asian food during our European vacation. Foods: -steam shrimp roll: not bad, a tad on the greasier side, but not bad. 4 stars -chicken feet: the sauce was different than what I'm normally used to but that's not a bad thing. 4 stars -egg custard bun: maybe because I was craving this all day but it was delicious 4.5 stars -ony choy (veggie): loved that they had this veggie so I wasn't about to complain about anything. 5 stars -fried squid: the batter was a bit too thick for an Asian dish. 3.5 stars Overall, a pretty good chinese restaurant.

pan fried tofu with eggplant stuffed with pork and shrimp in black bean sauce

Whatever other people wrote about Man Wah being a top Chinese restaurant in Hamburg was right. I wasn't disappointed at all although some of the things didn't go as planned. My friend and I made reservation for dinner at 7pm Friday (my friend who is a Hamburg native told me that there was no way we could get a table without reservation at Man Wah, that's how crowded it was). The lady who took her call said that the earlier we arrived the better and when we did, we were refused saying our table wasn't ready. Going back at 7pm, we got our table and proceeded to order immediately. We ordered two dim sum appetizers (funnily, most dim sums there are served in four instead of in three like in Copenhagen - does this mean Copenhagen dim sum restaurants are very stingy??) and ordered three main course: Tofu in crab meat sauce, shrimp and bell pepper in black bean sauce and pork ribs. What came out was the appetizers followed by shrimp and bell pepper in black bean sauce and tofu and eggplant in black bean sauce. We argued that we ordered the tofu in crab meat sauce but the waiter insisted that he heard it right and he told us that the black bean tofu was way better than the one we ordered. YEAH RIGHT. Without knowing how the tofu dish in crab meat sauce would taste, the tofu in black bean sauce was indeed nice. There was fried eggplant in the dish and they were divine. The shrimp and bellpepper was a bit too salty and the pork ribs didn't come out. We were lucky that way because we were stuffed after two appetizers and two main courses anyway, so we didn't ask about the pork ribs. We found out later that the waiter was Malaysian, so he understood us arguing about which item to order in Indonesian, so that's how everything got misunderstood. I told my friend in Indonesian what to order and my friend ordered in German and the waiter listened to me thinking that our order was final. Next time, make sure the waiter repeat the number of what you order before he leaves the table and book a table beforehand. You won't regret it. The bill came rather expensive at around 54 euro for two, but it was very good meal and we didn't regret any of it.

Chicken soup with egg and glass noodles

Great Chinese food with nice portions. The chicken soup was okay, but the dumplings and stir fry beef were the bomb! I wish I stayed in Hamburg longer so I could try this place another time.

    Take Out Menu, outside

This is as good as it gets in Germany! They were packed on Easter Sunday night so we ordered takeout. I like that they're specific about the region, all dishes are Cantonese and items that are not, such as the Octopus salad, specify that it's Thai. The food is excellent. I ordered the beef with wide rice noodles. (Guon Choy Ngau Hoh). Also a plus is that the staff speaks Cantonese. The fried rice flavor was balanced and not too salty. The Sweet and Sour Pork was done in the Imperial Ribs Style. And after dinner, I did not have the MSG thirst effect afterwards. Even though I have easy access to good Chinese food in Seattle and in neighboring Vancouver BC, I would make Man Wah one of my go-to food places when visiting Hamburg.

Doesn't look like much from the outside but the food, staff and ambiance were worth the slightly higher prices.

It was mid day during the week and it was not busy at all. We sat at a table with a lazy suzy which is great for groups so everyone can share. The food was good and it was authentic. There were a few European twists but that is to be expected. I had the fried rice and a brisket noodle soup. Everyone shared our dishes as well and everything that I tried was good.

The descriptions or mainly in German and Chinese, with brief English translations. Also not helpful. BUT I found my go-to dish, kung Pao chicken. But when I tried to order it the lady wouldn't let me. She literally scratched it off the list of numbers I had written down for our group. No idea why. Certainly not because there wasn't any chicken! At any rate, the 6 of us managed to get our order in. A couple of dishes we didn't recognize, but this has happened to me at more than one Chinese place. They just serve you whatever. The food was good, served hot, and the service was acceptable. The only thing I sent back was the mushroom tea (what??). I asked if they could just please bring regular old tea. Now, here's the kicker: the bill can to 125€, which isn't bad for six people. They didn't accept cards, but that wasn't an issue either since I had plenty of cash. I handed the lady 150€, and she wouldn't take it because it wasn't enough tip!!! Are you kidding?? She was super aggressive about it. My cousin, who speaks German, started asking "what?" and soon they were arguing! I pulled the150€ back and have her exact change. NO tip! Because of this, I won't be going back since she'd probably serve me spicy crispy lung (yes, it on the menu!)

A group of us who were in town for a conference, all highly educated scientists, from all over the world, who also happened to be brown and non-German speaking, visited this restaurant on July 11th, Thursday around 7-7:30 PM. The head waiter was super rude. He could not communicate in English, but our French friend tried to speak with him in German. Throughout service, he was rude and impatient with us and kept telling us to hurry up with ordering when we were asking questions. The food was mediocre, all the people saying on here that this was authentic Chinese food and very good, have never eaten authentic and good Chinese food. I'm from the US, and we have excellent restaurants here with amazing food and great, courteous service. We were so disgusted by his treatment of us, especially as he forcibly added a 10% tip without our permission. When I discovered what he was doing, he insisted it's mandatory in Hamburg to add 10% tip automatically. That is not true, tips are reserved for good service and are up to the discretion of the customer. Normally, I always add tip, but I have never encountered such rude, horrible service anywhere in the world!!!! Afterwards, our friend who understands a bit of German overheard him bitching about us to another customer and he even made a rude gesture to us, when we were leaving! Can you believe the audacity?! This guy is an awful, awful human who shouldn't be in the restaurant/hospitality business, and I hope the owner deals with him. I never wish ill on someone, but I sincerely hope karma prevails! From what I've read of some of the reviews below, there are other POCs who also had a terrible experience dining here, so please consider this a PSA!!!! Sure, the ambience is beautiful, but the food and the awful service are simply not worth it! If the owner actually cares about his customers and delivering good service, he/she will respond to my comment on here. What happened was inexcusable!

We were recommended this place for supposedly the best food of the three. A modern, large place, though surprisingly empty for a Saturday evening. There are separate rooms for functions and private groups. Service was friendly, when available, but very unattentive; hard to get their attention despite only a few tables being occupied at all, and spilled sauces etc. were not cleaned between courses. Prices are high, but so are portion sizes: if you want a varied sampling of their cooking, either go for a set menu (unfortunately minimum 2 people) or come with a large group so you can assemble enough dishes: It is Chinese cooking, so if you order a starter of cold pork belly, it will be just that, slices of cold pork belly. so an "OK" rating, with some cave-ats - I did prefer the sister original restaurant Ni Hao in Wandsbek.

I'd recommend that they let some rice on the table so we can serve ourselves when we need instead of getting up and asking them several times. They misunderstood some of our orders and the main dishes took more than an hour to arrive, but I think that it's perhaps because they're new to the business. We'll come back in few months to compare.
