I haven't had something like this from a Chinese restaurant since this tiny small hole in the wall joint we went to in Atlanta awhile back. That place in Atlanta we went to had mostly chinese patrons who said that they're known for "real" Chinese food and flavors. THAT is what I tasted at Man Wah! Soooooo good! And the service from the staff did not disappoint! We even had a friendly conversation with a gentlemen who seemed like he as a manager or an owner. Man Wah is one of the best Chinese restaurants in Hamburg. I didn't believe it at first but never judge a book by its cover. I figured if it's situated in such a touristy place, we would get ripped off. That was not the case. I have eaten mostly noodle soups here. The first time around they messed up my order and gave me roast duck with rice instead of noodles. Luckily it was pretty easy to fix. Just throw some noodles on it... The duck was quite good and I was given a generous portion of noodles. The soup also comes with Chinese broccoli. The second time around, I ordered the wonton noodle soup lunch special. The lunch specials come with a side order of chicken noodle soup which is quite good. The lunch portions were sufficient and the wontons themselves are freshly made and not frozen. The workers here speak German, Mandarin, Cantonese, and English. I found it more comfortable speaking to them in Cantonese because it avoided a lot of confusion. read more

We came here because we were craving Asian food during our European vacation. Foods: -steam shrimp roll: not bad, a tad on the greasier side, but not bad. 4 stars -chicken feet: the sauce was different than what I'm normally used to but that's not a bad thing. 4 stars -egg custard bun: maybe because I was craving this all day but it was delicious 4.5 stars -ony choy (veggie): loved that they had this veggie so I wasn't about to complain about anything. 5 stars -fried squid: the batter was a bit too thick for an Asian dish. 3.5 stars Overall, a pretty good chinese restaurant. read more

Whatever other people wrote about Man Wah being a top Chinese restaurant in Hamburg was right. I wasn't disappointed at all although some of the things didn't go as planned. My friend and I made reservation for dinner at 7pm Friday (my friend who is a Hamburg native told me that there was no way we could get a table without reservation at Man Wah, that's how crowded it was). The lady who took her call said that the earlier we arrived the better and when we did, we were refused saying our table wasn't ready. Going back at 7pm, we got our table and proceeded to order immediately. We ordered two dim sum appetizers (funnily, most dim sums there are served in four instead of in three like in Copenhagen - does this mean Copenhagen dim sum restaurants are very stingy??) and ordered three main course: Tofu in crab meat sauce, shrimp and bell pepper in black bean sauce and pork ribs. What came out was the appetizers followed by shrimp and bell pepper in black bean sauce and tofu and eggplant in black bean sauce. We argued that we ordered the tofu in crab meat sauce but the waiter insisted that he heard it right and he told us that the black bean tofu was way better than the one we ordered. YEAH RIGHT. Without knowing how the tofu dish in crab meat sauce would taste, the tofu in black bean sauce was indeed nice. There was fried eggplant in the dish and they were divine. The shrimp and bellpepper was a bit too salty and the pork ribs didn't come out. We were lucky that way because we were stuffed after two appetizers and two main courses anyway, so we didn't ask about the pork ribs. We found out later that the waiter was Malaysian, so he understood us arguing about which item to order in Indonesian, so that's how everything got misunderstood. I told my friend in Indonesian what to order and my friend ordered in German and the waiter listened to me thinking that our order was final. Next time, make sure the waiter repeat the number of what you order before he leaves the table and book a table beforehand. You won't regret it. The bill came rather expensive at around 54 euro for two, but it was very good meal and we didn't regret any of it. read more

I'm usually not a big fan of chinese restaurants in Germany since I always had bad experiences in these but I decided to give it another shot since my boyfriend was craving so much for dumplings. First surprise was the staff who was really nice with us. We decided to try 5 different sorts of dumplings including the shrimp dumpling soup. All of it were great (I personally didn't like two of it but my boyfriend liked it so I guess it's just a question of tastes), especially the shrimp dumpling soup which was so good and that I definitely recommend ! read more

As a New York transplant to Hamburg, I'm fairly picky about my Chinese food. This place hit the spot. Nothing fancy, nothing too crazy - but enjoyed our dim sum dinner. The restaurant had a lot to offer other than Dim Sum, such as some of your typical American things - beef and broccoli, chicken with brown sauce, fried rice - although we didn't get around to trying it. There also seemed to be some authentic Cantonese fair as well, including innards, various cuts of duck and yummy Chinese veggies. I wasn't sure what to expect considering it is on the Reeperbahn, but I am definitely interested in trying some of their other specialties! We will be back. read more

Came for dinner here with a large group of people and we ordered family style. This allowed me to taste a lot of the dishes on the menu. I do love my chinese food but you have to be a little careful whilst in Germany I highly recommend the dimsum. Really good and authentic dimsum is available here. We got about 8 different dimsums. I went with pork buns; really nothing quite like a great pork bun and this was a good pork bun. Lots of the other dimsum I tried were equally as tasty especially the dumplings We then proceeded to also order lots of main dishes. This is where the trouble started for me. Their dishes are germanized chinese mains. I wanted kung pao chicken, wasn't on the menu. Most food is a description of the dish. Unfortunately not authentic chinese so I was quite disappointed. I love Asian food. This place may be one of my favorite Asian food cookeries. Every time I have been in here I have been with my Asian friends and they love this place too. All of the dumplings are very good. Never had a bad one. Some of the items I ate because my Asian friends ordered them and I might not have. But all were well prepared. On one occasion we had some special orders and our waiter seemed to be upset and slowed way down. Almost couldn't get another beer. He was having a bad day. This is as good as it gets in Germany! They were packed on Easter Sunday night so we ordered takeout. I like that they're specific about the region, all dishes are Cantonese and items that are not, such as the Octopus salad, specify that it's Thai. The food is excellent. I ordered the beef with wide rice noodles. (Guon Choy Ngau Hoh). Also a plus is that the staff speaks Cantonese. The fried rice flavor was balanced and not too salty. The Sweet and Sour Pork was done in the Imperial Ribs Style. And after dinner, I did not have the MSG thirst effect afterwards. Even though I have easy access to good Chinese food in Seattle and in neighboring Vancouver BC, I would make Man Wah one of my go-to food places when visiting Hamburg. read more

The food and service here was very good and the interior is like most other chinese restaurants. However, I do need to point out that my dish, shrimp-and-pork-stuffed tofu in crab sauce (while delicious), actually contained chopped surimi and NO CRAB. The low price justifies the lack of crab, but I felt like it was false advertisement. The fact that it's one of their specialties makes me think this issue should have been resolved before. The pork and egg fried rice was excellent and we enjoyed the condiments at the table, especially the chilies in oil. So please do go here for great food; just don't expect crab in that dish. :P read more

I went here for Dim Sum and soup so my experience is a bit limited but it is still relatively easy to gauge the quality. I thought the place was great and one of the better Chinese places I have visited in Hamburg. They give you the option to make your food without MSG but they only told me this afterwards. I wish a place capable of cooking without MSG would just cook without MSG always, why not?! Hence the food was sometimes on the salty side. I like the location and atmosphere, the food was very good for the most part, and well priced. I will be giving it another (MSG-free) visit to try more items on the very extensive menu. read more

I was taken here late last night by someone claiming it was the best chinese in Hamburg. I beg to differ. It's a decent place, probably better now having recently been renovated. I found the food average but I've had really good chinese in New York for years and in other cities, so I'm spoiled. If you're up for chinese and in the area, not a bad choice but I feel that the German reviewers are overrating this place simply because people probably don't have much to compare with. Hamburg isn't exactly the center of Chinese culture. What disappointed most was the service. I found it impersonal und unattentive. There were a bunch of chinse folks there which is a good sign...they were all eating. At the same time, they were getting all the attention and we were more or less ignored. When asking advice on things to order there really wasn't much of an effort to help. The things which were recommended didn't even really taste that good.
