I'm especially looking forward to the holiday light show--it's going to be spectacular! During my visit, I even got a sneak peek into Santa's workshop, where he and his elves are hard at work preparing for the big day. It was such a magical experience! I went to Bullard High and would always walk here with my friends after school. Over the years, things have changed a bit, but not for the worse. I frequent Wholefoods and La Boulangerie. Love that Anthropologie was added in the recent years- fits the demographic more than when it was at Fashion Fair. They had a juicery but recently replaced it with Wetezel Pretzel. Uncle Harry's is also back in the mix! Not sure why they ever left this shopping center. There is a little bit of everything here from Sushi to burgers, sandwiches, cookies, ice cream, pizza, brewery, etc. Some things I would love to see added one day: Froyo, North Face, Kate Spade, Free people, crate and barrel, club Monaco or even Zara would be nice. =)

I went here just for the 75% off Sale and was highly disappointed to find only one small portable…read morelittle table with just a few items on it that were 75% off. I asked the salesperson about it and she said "Oh, that is just the stuff that didn't sell at the last sale and we are just trying to get rid of it". I was shocked that that was all they had to offer. What a total joke of a sale it was. I will now go to another Bath and Body Works store to see if they have the same rinky-dink 75% off sale or if it's a "Real" Sale. What's up with this?

It's nice that I can watch a movie, get something to eat and get dessert. I hope they put more stores in, it would be nice to go shopping while I'm in the area hanging out. The area is kept clean and there are a lot of parking spaces behind both sides of the building. When there are events at the Savemart Center, parking can be very limited and the restaurants can get really busy.

There is really almost no reason to actually go INSIDE of this mall, the only businesses that seem…read moreto be open and are available only via the interior are Mi cafecito, a t-shirt store, a record store, a tax preparation company, and a juice/snack stand. All other businesses have either access via an exterior door, or in the case of at least one business, you can ONLY access them through the exterior. (The interior gate was closed and locked) Many of the businesses that were hanging on here have apparently moved, with signs giving you directions to their new address. Even the workforce connection and City of Fresno offices that were here are now closed. A renovation was started next to the Caltrans building, it has drab boring grey carpet and walls, but it makes it MAYBE 175 feet into the building, and then reverts back to the original 70's decor. (Which obviously I love, and I think they should have absolutely kept it.) The lights in the main concourse were mostly turned off, and the only people besides myself seemed to be Caltrans employees walking around on lunch, a homeless man charging his phone, and a dude kicking back on one of the benches, chowing down on slim jim's and listening to music full blast from his phone's speaker. It was really sad to see this place in such a state of abandon, though surprisingly I didn't see any evidence of the ceiling collapsing or any other things you might typically see from buildings in this state. There are supposedly some apartments going in here upstairs, but I see absolutely no evidence of this. It was announced early last year and was supposed to take 18-24 months, but I see absolutely no preparation being done, and I will believe it when I see it. (I would also think twice about renting an apartment in a failing mall, where they are banking on the apartments to bring in more businesses.) All in all, it was an interesting trip just seeing the old mall designs that I loved, but sad to see a mall I loved as a kid so empty and abandoned.

It definitely has softened my expectations on what it plans to be. I hear it may be repurposed for apartments which may be a good idea to bring some life back to the community in that area. It heavily depends on its investors and what corporate agenda lies in the plays it decides to make for the future of this location. I come every 2-3 times a year to see if there's any updates to renovations/storefronts. Other than that, the mall culture is dead there.

And then the City began to cut down all the lovely old pine and other trees, leaving no shade for passersby and no shelter for the squirrels. Now the squirrels scatter around aimlessly between your feet and the playgrounds in the center of the mall where moms would take their little ones to play..well those are gone right now too. Construction has also made a royal mess of the place. It is a feat alone if you can navigate the "do not enter"," all businesses open during construction," and "no parking" signs. I know it will take a while for those in charge to be able to realize their dream for what this place may become some day...right now, it is a menagerie and a mess of construction, forced out or dying businesses, and displaced families who used to allow their kids to play along the mall but now must guard their children from falling tree branches. I really hope the City puts in more urban parks around the area to ensure these citizens are properly cared for.

On paper being the Fulton Mall seems like a great idea. Place for people to hang out and walk around, do some shopping and grabbing a bite to eat. When I first saw the Fulton Mall prior to the renovation project about 3 years ago--downtown Fresno just felt like a downer. The Fulton Mall was dead with businesses who didn't seem to care about the looks of their store front, several vacant spaces, and very little foot traffic. The businesses that were there were flea market type joints and just not something that would bring people in. The feel in downtown was that of a place no one would even want to go to. This was a similar feeling of downtown San Jose long ago where I am a native of. So it felt familiar, the reputation of high crime, homeless, and no reason to go downtown is what I felt in downtown Fresno and what many locals seem to be vocal about. Once the project started there was a lot of backlash from many locals. Already hating on the entire project before it even finished--heck even before it started. Which made me scratch my head and ask myself is there anything Fresnans like? They hate on downtown all these years, and they hate on projects the city is doing to try and improve it? As the project went underway I noticed more support through pro-downtown groups and campaigns on social media. The high speed rail also contributed by fixing/improving/building infrastructure in downtown so it also help the aesthetics of some parts of the area--I believe the Tuolumne Street Bridge. Whatever was going on was working. There was excitement in downtown and I could sense pride for it--which was heavily lacking years prior. I recently went before the official opening of Fulton as a Street and no longer a mall, but a good portion of it was already open to cars. The new street pavement, new lights, refurbished art, cleaned up store fronts, it's a nice fresh start and I can't help but just feel optimistic and good for downtown and the city of Fresno. It's too early to say how things will be long term, but it's already better than it was before. Honestly, even though only time will tell how successful this project is, right now as it stands renovated, it is already much better than it was before. Now it's up to the businesses downtown to attract people from the suburbs of North Fresno, SE Fresno, and Clovis. The community also has to start showing some support and pride for their city. Unfortunately everything has to be in sync. If investors and businesses see no one wants to come downtown, then no cool things will open there. But at the same time then no people will go. Go to ArtHop and you can get a glimpse of what downtown Fresno could be on a regular basis.

For those new in the area, I know exiting Herndon right off the freeway still gives off some MEH vibes, but if you keep driving east on Herndon, you'll see that Fresno's north side is nice and this is the affluent part of the city. For those on road trips through the 99 and if you ever wanted to check out Fresno, the Herndon exit and stopping by this plaza is a safe bet. My only knock still on this shopping plaza is the design. Boring strip mall design. This place is HUGE and could have been designed to be more walkable like an outdoor mall. If they put everything in the center and parking around. Missed opportunity.
