Visited the week before Xmas The salmon pizza had only a few small pieces of salmon , not even on every cut slice. Very disappointing for the price. We have had a lot better there in the past. I don't know who was putting the pizzas together but he certainly wasn't a foodie or interested in promoting the business. A group of women beside us were presented with what can only be described as dishes of tomato slush- the look on their faces said it all. We'll vote with our feet. read more

Have been coming here every time we are in Auckland but this dinner was a big disappointment. The calamari rings were like rubber bands. The lasagna had too many pasta layers with almost no meat and cheese. The mussels were in a way too salty sauce and the sausage on the pizza Was tough and tasteless. This restaurant has had many many years of great food with lots of loyal diners so it is sad to see a definite deterioration in the quality of its food. read more

Consistently good, and far better than the other Italian options on the waterfront, this place is a regular haunt for locals. The garlic bread is really good as are other Italian staples such as pizza and pasta. The cash only option as mentioned by James W. is worth mentioning but they also take credit card as well. Great for a quick, casual dinner with lots of charm and character. read more

Mamma Rosa has long been a local of mine providing flavoursome Italian pizza, pasta and other dishes. This quaint suburban restaurant is the ideal place if you are looking to go local for a decent meal. One tedious point I must cover is the 'cash only' option, which is left to the nearby alcohol shop to deal with to withdraw money. Also, the price seems to vary from the menus provided, with the dishes always managing to work out one or two dollars more than the displayed price. I am fussy about my pizzas and there aren't many places in Auckland that I will go to for a Pizza (That's Amore, Al Volo and Dantes are the only ones). My preference are authentic napoletana styled pizzas... Anyway against our better judgement (we were concerned when we saw baklava and other Turkish desserts on the menu for a place branding itself as an Italian pizzeria) we decided to try Mamma Rosa's Pizzeria for 2 takeaway pizzas due to the fact it was near my friends place where we were having dinner We ordered 2 basic large pizzas (Funghi and Salami....) - which to our shock when we picked up cost us $50 (their online takeaway menu had the price of $14 & $16 per each pizza we ordered, the girl who took our order didn't tell us that this wasn't the price for a large and it is very conveniently hidden on the very bottom of their menu that an additional $10 charge is for the large)... When we opened the pizza to see what they looked like, the large is smaller than a small supermarket pizza. I went back to ask the manager if this was the correct sizing to which he confirmed it was. When I suggested that they are having a laugh charging $25 for this, he decided to tell me that maybe at a place like Pizza Hut they would serve a bigger Pizza but they are much better than Pizza hut... He got very hostile and told me to leave when I told him that the real / authentic pizzerias in Auckland don't even charge that (and have true large pizzas) and the proper Pizzerias use ingredients such as bufala mozzarella (or mozzarella at the least)... Mamma Rosas use cheddar or something else horrid! In short - avoid this place like the plague - despite the managers assertions a Pizza Hut Pizza would have been preferable (note, I haven't eaten one in probably 10 years). Even a supermarket pizza would taste better. The base was like a biscuit / cracker in terms of its composition and not too dissimilar in size. The ingredients were disgusting (the cheese made us feel sick). They don't even have basil on their magherita (as per the menu) - you have to order this as an additional side (magherita without basil). Looking at the other (non pizza) dishes that the cliental were eating, it is fair to say that this place serves slop for dinner. We threw the pizzas out after a couple of pizzas - it was the worst my friends and I have ever encountered. read more

Went to this place over the weekend for pizzas. Big mistake. At $25 per pizza I would expect some serious quality - these would make frozen supermarket pizzas seem gourmet. They were also some of the smallest "large" pizzas I've ever seen, but considering the taste this was actually a positive. On top of that they, for some inexplicable reason, don't take eftpos, forcing their customers to drive to an ATM to pay their exorbitant prices. My family and I recently moved to New Zealand from California and have just found a home in Kohi. We were driving through the neighborhood and happened upon Mamma Rosa. As soon as we opened the doors to our car, we received lovely wafts of garlic, tomatoes, basil and all around, a welcoming and inviting aroma. We decided to have dinner here with our 2 toddlers. As any parent knows, eating out can be a challenge and you never know what the experience is going to be. I almost dreaded it but the staff was beyond friendly and helpful. They place was full but they got us seated right away. Though the restaurant is small(some outside seating and a small area in the back) they helped us to a table and brought out two high chairs. I can't tell you the last time that we have been out to dinner and haven't had a child on our laps. We ordered a small pepperoni pizza for the kids right away and an order of garlic bread. the garlic bread is definitley not a traditional take on garlic bread. It looks like they pizza but with fresh garlic on top. It was tasty but i wish the garlic had been cooked because it was quite strong. the kids pizza came out and it was tasty. the crust itself did not have a lot of flavor but the cheese on the pizza was delicious. I ordered the fettuccine vegetarian (so good! absolutely would recommend this. and the portions are HUGE!) and my hiusband ordered the pasta putanesca. I feel like this place excells with their pasta dishes. They were very good. I ordered a tiramisu to go and actually forgot about it for a few days in the fridge. Let me tell you, it held together nicely and was still delicious 3 days later. other notes: parking was quite easy for us and we found several spots located right out front. We went on a Friday night around 6:30. the place was busy but the staff was attentive and very friendly. good place for kids and families or even if it just 2 of you, i would recommend trying to get a seat outside for something a bit more romantic. Had some fantastic takeout from here tonight. We ordered the spaghetti meatballs and bolognese and a garlic bread pizza. The sauce had great flavour, and the pasta was cooked perfectly. The bread had a great crispy crust and and was nice and fluffy in the middle. Easily one of the best Italian meals we've had in Auckland. read more

It's a restaurant basically for the locals, I went one night in weekend was very busy. Saw two Italian man working in an open kitchen non stop. Ordered takeaway one pizza bread and pasta, basic ones. Taste very authentic, may go again. read more

Awful service!! Rude, slow and impatient! Food is decent, although I've only tried one pizza - the Hawaiian. But the service was bad enough that I won't be coming back! Good location and decent parking. Seemed as if most of the staff was new or didn't know what was going on or didn't communicate with one another. A long time favourite of mine, having grown up just around the corner. The food is always fantastic. For takeaways I often order the salami pizza, always delicious. When I dine in I often get the Polla Alla Mama Rosa. I have been many times with family and friends. I know a couple of friends who have come back for special dinners such as anniversaries. Turning out to be our favourite Italian restaurant! A small but very cosy and warm environment. You will need to book because it's very popular and I can see why. Staff and food are fantastic. Our booked table was running a few minutes late (obviously the patrons before us were enjoying an extended stay and didn't want to leave understandably) so we were offered a temporary table outside and a complimentary garlic bread. After we got our indoor table about 20 min later and had our amazing mains, we were further offered a complimentary liqueur because of our initial wait for the table. I have to say though that this is the first time we had to wait for our table so it is rare. A big thumbs up for the outstanding service to make up for a minor inconvenience on the night. read more
