Here in Buenos Aires, the melted cheese dish is known as provoleta and if your sensibilities mirror mine I'd suggest getting it wherever and whenever you see it on a menu. No exception here. So my second visit, while very good indeed, allowed me to focus on parts of the menu that I'd enjoyed previously while not over-filling myself on provoleta. What that looked like was this: Multiple versions of empanadas, Choripán (basically a sausage sandwich), and flan, all accompanied by beer and wine and all enjoyed at a very reasonable price. TripAdvisor guests rate El Sanjuanino very high as do I. I have a hunch it'd be the place I'd return to repeatedly each time I found myself in Recoleta. It's casual and delicious - especially the provoleta - attracting both Argentinians and in-the-know travelers. You'd be wise to count yourself amongst them.

However, all the places seemed to only have prepackaged salads and sandwiches, leaving this place the only hot food / cooked to order vendor. Ordered 4 empanadas (they have carne, ham and cheese, chicken, and vegetarian to choose from) at $2 each, and damn did they hit the spot. Husband and I both agreed tonight wasn't the night we'd worry about our healthy eating new year resolutions, so we went back and ordered 4 more. They're gooood. They also have assorted beers and other drinks. Bottled water cost me $5 though since it got added/billed as a combo to the empanadas, to my dismay (normally supposed to be $3). Not sure about the logic of why it costs me more to buy a drink as a combo to my food rather than purchasing it as a standalone... Otherwise good hot food for this hour while we all wait endlessly at our gate for some unknown reason.
