Deb does an awesome job of talking about what has changed in the medical field, new best practices, and also facilitates great group discussion. There's no such thing as a silly question in her class. :-) She takes time out to do a tour of St Peter's Hospital and the hospital in olympia. The tour is great because you get to see the birthing centers and/or the rooms that you'll be in. You also get to meet and greet with some of the medical staff that work there. One of the things that stood out for us was that we also got to handle some of medical equipment that will be used during your birth or C-section. While we were looking at all the different types of equipment she was explaining what they're used for in general, the risk to Mom and or baby, and also what the hospital may do in the event of emergency. The videos that she showed during the course we're also very informative and up-to-date.. not like the outdated ones there's a lot of other places show. We found the resources that she gives to be super helpful as well. I actually ended up reaching out to her after the class to find out where I could find additional pumping equipment at the hospital didn't have. She replied within of short period of time and referred me to a store that had exactly what I was looking for. She was a lifesaver. One of the things that my husband said he greatly appreciated was that she also goes over the coaches roles and responsibilities during the birth, gives tips and suggestions for them, but also takes time to recognize what they're going through to. So often it's all about the mom that we tend to forget the coaches are also going through the birthing experience as well. If w could give more than five stars we totally would!!!

Throughout my pregnancy, Ashley was quick to respond to my questions and requests, and I never once felt as though I was bothering her. She was quick to admit when she didn't know something and do the research needed to educate herself. She has a great sense of humor, a soothing demeanor, and escorted us through a very complicated birth process that saw us from birth center to hospital to emergency C-section. She remained alert, supportive, and calm from 1am until 10pm. When I chose my doula, I wanted not another "medical professional," but rather someone who felt like a friend who happened to be well-educated in labor and childbirth. Ashley was a perfect fit. I would recommend Ashley as a doula to anyone.

When she didn't have an answer to one of our questions she knew just where to find it. She was so warm, comfortable and respectful, we felt like she was part of our family. She told us we could call her any moment of the day or night, and she really meant it. When the time came for us to rush to the hospital, we called her at 2:00 am and she was awake and alert as if she had been waiting for our call, and she stayed that way through the entire birth process. Afterward she called and visited, and became a friend. Our daughter is now a cute and healthy 6 month old, and the whole family is adjusting well, which is the highest recommendation I can offer.

I originally chose Puget Sound Midwives and Birth Center because I didn't have insurance at the…read morebeginning of my pregnancy and wanted something smaller, more personal, and supportive of a natural birth. I paid for all my early appointments in full, in cash, as soon as I was informed of any charges. I was looking for compassionate care, continuity, and a trusting relationship with the person who would eventually help deliver my child. Unfortunately, that is not what I received. I first saw Courtney in May 2025 and was told I needed to also see Amanda, the other midwife on staff at the time. I really connected with Amanda and felt hopeful that she would be present at my birth. Sadly, that plan fell apart when I was told (months later, around November) that Amanda would be leaving in December -- and I'd now be under the care of a new midwife I had barely met. From the beginning, appointments with Courtney often felt condescending and patronizing. There was a noticeable amount of fear-mongering around hospital births and C-sections -- (to the point that when I did get to Evergreen hospital the first words out of my mouth were, "I don't want a C-Section!!!") rather than being supportive of informed choice, the conversations often leaned into judgment and pressure. As I neared the end of my pregnancy, things got even worse. I went nearly 2.5 weeks overdue, and in those last five weeks, I was constantly offered cervical checks, a balloon pump, and other interventions to try to get labor started. The new midwife said she couldn't reach my cervix because her fingers were too short -- yet I was still billed for every single "exam." In total, I was charged $250 for completely unhelpful and ineffective procedures. When I asked how I would know if I was in labor, I was simply told, "You'll just know." When I called the on-call number to report that my water had broken, I was told I wasn't dilated enough and was advised not to come in. No one tested me to confirm whether my water had actually broken. As it turns out, it had -- three days before I gave birth. Thankfully, the rupture was at the top, or the consequences for my baby could have been devastating. I ended up giving birth at Evergreen Hospital, and I truly believe my child is alive today because I left the birth center and sought real medical care. On the billing side, it was a complete mess. I kept getting bills addressed to the wrong last name, even though I had input my correct name in their patient portal. The billing department never even properly checked my insurance until after I gave birth -- and only then because someone called me demanding the correct information. They had scanned my insurance card months earlier, but somehow still had it entered incorrectly in their supposedly HIPAA-compliant system. I ended up having to enter my insurance manually myself. To top it off, I'm now fighting a $600 emergency transfer fee with my insurance. I was only at the birth center for two hours before my husband had to drive me to the hospital himself -- after the midwife suggested I walk the apartment complex stairs at 3am to try to "get things going." And yet, I'm being charged as if they coordinated an emergency transfer. Save yourself the time, stress, and incompetence. What was supposed to be a supportive, natural, empowering birth experience turned into chaos, confusion, and unnecessary risk to my baby. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone looking for truly safe and supportive midwifery care.

My insurance through my employer covers the Medela Symphony pump at 100%. I confirmed with my employer & insurance ahead of time and I also contacted nurturing expressions. They said some employers (insurances) don't, so there may be an upgrade fee I have to pay, but they've worked with mine before and it would be covered. I set up a pick up for the pump for my due date, gave them all information they needed and went about the business of having a baby. I picked up the pump without much issue - they even put a note on the rental agreement that the $90 + tax would be billed to insurance. All was well for a few months until someone at my insurance company made a mistake and did not cover the upgrade fee for a couple of months. At this point I contacted nurturing expressions and they were adamant that the upgrade fee is never covered by insurance and I have to pay. They were also baffled about the note about billing $90 + tax to insurance - someone at their store must have made a mistake since they bill more! But I have to pay the upgrade fee, they were adamant about that, so I immediately returned the pump to them and rented from a different place while I figure out what happened. I researched and called and talked to insurance and nurturing expressions multiple times and found that: - nurturing expressions bills $90 + tax to insurance AS WELL AS an upgrade fee of $59.09 which happens to be the difference between $90 + tax and what insurance covers ($40) for in-network providers. So they bill the negotiated discount with insurance as an upgrade fee - my insurance does cover the upgrade fee, but they made a mistake for those two months and they will send a check for the difference. They did so in June of 2024, so about 6 months after I returned the pump to nurturing expressions. You'd think all would end here, but in December of 2024 I started getting phone calls from a *collection* agency for those two months despite the fact that insurance sent a check to nurturing expressions.

I was a 'good student' (her words) and watched the 2 paid webinars, and paid for 3 months of chart consultation. I made a lot of changes and put in a lot of energy toward this process, for over three months before she would even think of making an attempt (IUI). Just a few days before our scheduled IUI, and after I had already taken Clomid, she cancelled the cycle attempt. Labs she had asked for revealed I was not immuned to mumps. I asked if it was likely that I could contract mumps through frozen, washed semen. She skirted the question, but added that I had done my labs for hormone level checks on the wrong day of my cycle and they would need to be redone. I had felt like I was nearing the end of a marathon at approaching our scheduled IUI. Now my insurance will not cover getting those hormone check labs done again, and trying to get the mumps vaccine still has not been succesful after weeks of calling my ob/gyn and gp. As a person who was already gluten intolerant, I gave up coffee, and due to allergies which I used to ignore, gave up chocolate and cheese. I bought more organics, took fertility tea which I steeped overnight, took supplements, did fertility yoga, did abdominal self massage (specific method). Kristin said she could do the lab tests, but insurance won't work with her. More out of pocket. Earlier on when I hesitated at even doing the labs, she implied she would not be able to work with me if I did not. I had already paid her at that point. We are backing out. Anyone who does plan on this method through Maia Midwifery & Fertility needs to know that she calls the shots and isn't going to say anything like 'this is so exciting!' If your past experience with getting pregnant with donor sperm was at home, or via an ob/gyn assisted IUI (now an endangered, if not extinct species) just prepare for the difference. If you have a friend who works as an ob/gyn, some will do the procedure at your home for you, free of charge. My current ob/gyn told me she had done it for friends. I almost felt I could have asked her. My other recommendation for those of you ttc via donor is use a known donor. You ob/gyn can advise which tests your donor needs, and contract forms are online. Laws vary by state, but here in WA, as I last read and understood it, if there was no intercourse, he has no rights if trying to claim parental rights later. With fresh sperm, doing this yourself at home can work and be affordable, as it ended up being for us. Baby dust to anyone reading this!
