It is a family run place so you shop in a friendly atmosphere with help allways on hand.There is a good choice of food and other stuff . the kind of thing you suddenly think of and want to pop out for. They have sandwiches and also newspapers so you can pop round for your lunch and put your feet up to read the paper having been servsd with them in a nice place.It's not far from chidrens play area so is handy for Mums too.

It's a really standard Post Office, it's normally quiet when I go in so have never had to queue and am normally in and out within 2 minutes if I just have something to send off. They sell a small range of things there, I think just like envelopes, jiffy bags and confectionary but I've never really looked much at what they sell. There is plenty of on street parking outside so it's an easy and convenient place to go.

St Martin's is one of York's most notable landmarks, best-known for its impressive clock which…read morehangs over Coney Street. But it has also had a tumultuous history, and contains one of York's most impressive mediaeval stained glass windows. The church was one of one of York's largest and finest, prior to a fateful night in 1942 when an air raid reduced the church to a smouldering ruin. Before then, it boasted a large nave and chancel with full length aisles and chapels. The fabric dated from the 11th to the 15th centuries. The well-known and large double-sided clock on Coney Street was fitted in 1668, and was topped by the statue of the 'Little Admiral' in the 18th century. The clock and statue survived the bombing, but little else did. The church was eventually rebuilt between 1961 and 1968, with the 15th century tower and south aisle becoming the church, and the remainder (most of the former nave and north aisle) becoming an enclosed garden of remembrance. Substantial parts of the north walls survive, however, including elements from the 11th century. Although much smaller, the restored church is an attractive space, combining modern works with a 17th century memorial to Sir William Sheffield (d. 1633) and - above all - its mediaeval stained glass. This had fortunately been removed for safe keeping in 1940, and includes one gem: the window depicting the life and works of St Martin of Tours, dating from around 1440. Formerly the west window, this is now in the new north wall and faces visitors as they enter. It is huge for a parish church (and is the largest in the city outside the Minster): 9m high and 4m wide, it is one of the best preserved of its type and contains no Victorian additions or repairs. The church is normally open during weekdays for private prayer and visitors.

The village of Cawood was once known as 'the Windsor of the North', thanks to it being the location…read moreof a Palace belonging to the Archbishops of York (now in the care of the Landmark Trust). The river Ouse here is wide and navigable and is immediately downstream of the confluence of the River Wharfe. For most of its history, crossing the river had to be done by ferry, although highwayman Dick Turpin is said to have forded the river here on his famous ride from London to York. It was here in 1530 that Cardinal Wolsey was arrested for treason, recalled in the nursery rhyme 'Humpty Dumpty'. In 1870 an Act was passed to provide a permanent swing bridge here, which was duly completed in 1872. It now carries the B1222 across the river. It is a surprisingly impressive structure for so small a road and village; while still narrow, its series of truss arches with the central tower for the bridge operator is impressive. In recent years the bridge has suffered from closures at short notice, thanks to its age: significant repairs were therefore undertaken in 2003. The abbey occupied the entire site of the Museum Gardens and sat opposite theYork minster. What is left of the abbey is the remains of the nave where the monks prayed and sang, and the cloister, where the monks washed their clothes and were allowed to speak. King Henry VIII banned all monasteries in England in 1530s. The monks at St Mary's were pensioned off in 1540 and the abbey buildings were converted into a palace for the King when he visited York. Gradually the abbey fell into ruins and what you see now is what remains!

5 miles SW of Malton, on a minor road off A64 stands the riverside ruins of an Augustinian priory,…read morepicturesquely set in the beautiful Derwent valley near the Yorkshire Wolds. Features include a gatehouse bedecked with the heraldry of the De Roos family of Helmsley Castle. It was sometime during the 1120s that Walter l'Espec founded Kirkham Priory with a community of Augustinian canons. As Lord of Helmsley he later established two houses of the Cistercian Order, the great Rievaulx Abbey close to his estate, and a smaller abbey in Bedfordshire. But, legend has it, that Kirkham Priory was founded in memory of l'Espec's only son who had died close to this site after a fall from his horse. Some accounts say he was startled by a boar and others that he was a wild teen horseman and was racing. A 13th century, twin-bayed lavatorium (for washing) is set in the west wall of the cloister. Despite the disappearance of the lead-lined water troughs, the arched bays contain some splendid decoration. The front wall of the late 13th century gatehouse remains as I said, still displaying several heraldic shields, and much of its figure sculpture. There is also a fine moulded Romanesque arch that was possibly the doorway from the cloister to the refectory.The riverside ruins of an Augustinian priory, picturesquely set in the beautiful Derwent valley near the Yorkshire Wolds. An ideal place for a picnic and to wander around, there are benches to sit on near the river and there is a toilet provided. Not open in winter.
