Such a great way to find out about new venues! Once we finally went, we were there on a weekend when the school house museum was open. In between apple tasting, general sightseeing and discovery, browsing in shops, and all those fun activities, we took a quiet respite and visited the stately stone building and its surrounding grounds. Inside, the displays of period learning materials, old maps and books, and other remnants of bygone days is really well done. The docents are very helpful, and especially encouraging to kids when they see what school used to be like long before their time. We've been lucky enough to visit the interior several times during our visits to Oak Glen over the past decade. The last time we went in late September, though it was a Sunday during their open hours, the doors were locked. There was a sign at the entrance about being closed during rain or snow days. A total of about five raindrops had fallen then afternoon, but maybe the threat of rain kept them from opening. Our Sweet Granddaughter had a great time on their playground area. That gave DH and I a chance to take turns watching / helping her, and also just relaxing in the quiet environment under the old oak trees. They encourage acorn gathering (free!) around the property. Parking is free. Clean restrooms with running water were open - great for washing hands after playing. We like to get out to Oak Glen about every two to three years, so maybe next time the school house will be open for a return visit to the interior.

The restrooms were locked but there were porta potties available. There was a table and bench for us to have a little picnic. The parking lot is free to use and would be a great location on a snow day!

Some of the dinosaurs could definitely use a little maintenance, and parts of the park feel a bit dated and cheap, but that honestly adds to its quirky roadside-attraction charm. And for fans of Pee-wee's Big Adventure, this is a must-do stop -- it's the filming location where Andy tries to kick Pee-Wee's ass by the dinosaur. That alone makes it worth the visit. Fun, nostalgic, and great for a quick stop -- just go in with the right expectations and enjoy the weirdness.

If you're looking for an outdoor wedding venue for great Princess-esque photos, this is the place…read moreto go. I needed to tour Kimberly Crest because I always wanted a Disney Princess wedding, but I didn't want to get married at Disneyland or in Downtown Disney. To book the tour slot, we filled out the form on their website and emailed to coordinate a time with Mary and Tanya after sharing some additional details about our wedding (priorities, budget, timing, guest count). The historic home and additional stone stairwell and fountain add-on are beautiful, and they are great for couples who want a photographic venue and have put a high emphasis on getting great wedding portraits in a castle-eqsque setting. We were looking for a wedding venue with water elements, and felt like the fountain/pond was a great water feature. You have the option for your guests to go inside the house for a guided tour during cocktail hour, but otherwise it is closed, which means the entirety of your wedding is outdoors. Inspired by a French castle, the French château-style mansion was built in 1897 and has an old Victorian-style architecture, and the iconic cascading stone and concrete stairs in the Italian Renaissance-style gardens (the majority of the photos you see online) were added between 1905 and 1909 as a part of the garden overhaul by the new Kimberly family owners. In case of rain in Redlands, they have great tent partnerships and can get your reception space tented for a great day. It's a venue-only rental, which is great if you're looking to bring in all of your own vendors for a Saturday wedding with up to 200 guests! The ceremony is on the grass lawn, the cocktail hour is behind the house in a cute secret garden area, and the main reception dinner and dancing are in the courtyard at the top of the stairs, and you can really transform the space for your own fairytale vision. If you book, you get exclusive use of historic gardens & grounds, and the old Carriage House and Garden House as the two getting ready rooms for the amount of hours that you book (keep in mind the hours you book also include the setup and tear down times for your vendors). While we were touring, there were professional photoshoots for Quinceañeras, and I can easily see why they'd select Kimberly Crest for their photoshoot! Although we ended up going a different direction for our wedding venue, we loved seeing the different spaces around the property, and I hope to be able to come back one day.

Be sure to arrive a little early as they start right on time. The Kimberly Crest House offers reserved tours for small groups, which makes the experience feel more personal. Our docent was incredibly knowledgeable and had even worked closely with the family's descendants, so she shared lots of fascinating and heartfelt stories along the way. While photos and videos aren't allowed inside, the tour includes a walk through the living room, dining room, kitchen, second-floor common area, a remodeled bathroom, and several bedrooms. The interior was beautifully preserved, and the whole house was comfortably air-conditioned, which made the hour-long tour very pleasant. The gift shop is currently under construction, so only pop-up cards were available for purchase during our visit. I do wish we had been able to take photos for keepsakes. This was a lovely example of women's leadership and education throughout history.

Cool Vintage Collection from the 1930's…read more We came by the museum to check out the extensive collection of one man, Mr Jim Ruddy. Unfortunately, I didn't see anything that was familiar to me since the vintage treasure trove were from the depression era. I may look old but I wasn't born in the depression era. LoL! The Great Depression started in October 29, 1929. When we entered the museum a sweet elderly lady greeted us at the door. She was seated at a table behind the cast iron railing that separated the visitors from the collection. She cheerfully took our money as we handed it to her ($1/person admission fee) and asked us if we'd like to hear a little history about the museum and the man behind the collection. She proceeded to tell us the story and we were all ears. Immediately, as we passed through the entrance we were suddenly transported back in time. The items were from 1930's and early 1940's. She said everything in the museum is authentic and original recreated to display like that in a general store of that period. It was an amazing display that transported us back in time. We took our time going around the store as we tried to place ourselves back in that era: the fixtures, the signs, the products: groceries, cigarettes, hardware, clothing, hats, medicines, yarn and sewing items, beauty products, "Hallmark" cards, soaps, and toys. I mean, the Monopoly board game. had wooden pieces back in 1935. Many of the items were unused and 95% of them were filled with their original contents (medicines on the shelves). The museum is located in the heart of downtown Palm Springs on Palm Canyon Drive. In 1983, Mr. Ruddy created "Ruddy's 1930s General Store Museum" in Palm Springs, CA. He passed away in April 2017. The store is being well taken care of by his good friend... the sweet lady that welcomed us in the beginning. Review #1523

It might be small in size but it's actually packed with a lot of memorabilia from the 30s and 40s. This massive treasure was painstakingly collected by Mr. Jim Ruddy for many years and was eventually arranged as if this was an actual general store from the depression era. Everything was surprisingly authentic and well preserved. You'll be amazed how organized the displays were as if looking at a real store. Every item is arranged accordingly in each section. There were groceries, pharmacy, cigarettes, hardware, clothing, cosmetics, toys, etc. A $1 donation will grant you entry to the museum but we actually gave more than that. It's a pleasure speaking with the lovely lady overlooking the museum who's ready to tell you stories and answer any of your questions.
