The Short: A great place to take the kids for a sunny day out, and a decadent strawberry ice cream…read more The Long: For the record, we went sans kids. But having two sproutlings, I know that they would have had a great time here. Strawberry Fields supply berries to a number of supermarkets and fruit shops in the Brisbane area. They open their farm up to the public for self-picking. But be prepared: the price you pay in supermarkets is about half the price you'll pay at the farm gate. Even if you do pick them yourself. For example, I can get a 1KG tray at Costco in peak season for about $7 whereas they are selling for $14 at the shop, and at the pick and pay register. I really don't understand why this is, but I'm sure there is a good reason why. Anyway, we picked our tray and also picked up some Jam berries. The Jam berries are two 1KG trays for $6, which were just perfect for us when we were nearly out of frozen stock for our jam reserves. The real highlight for us today was deciding upon a Strawberry Ice Cream. ZOMG these were just delicious. Based on what my wife spied when she was waiting to receive our cones, they use Bulla Extra Creamy Ice Cream as the base, and then throw in huge chunks of strawberries and mix it all up. The result is this soft and creamy ice cream with the most intense strawberry flavour to it. I would be inclined to drive from Caloundra regularly to get one of these suckers. There is a good playground area for the skidlets to run around in and large paddock areas where they can wear out their crazy before flopping back into the car for a sleep on the way home. So if you don't mind paying a bit extra for strawberries in exchange for an "experience", give this farm a go. It's better set up than Rollin Farms with a cafe and good facilities. And there is a Sausage Sizzle on weekends that you can get a cheap lunch for the sproglets (or you, if you fancy a Bunnings Sandwich for lunch).

A long time (2009), in a galaxy far far away (Spain), I ate plate after plate of Padron peppers and…read morewondered at these marvels the likes of which I'd never tried before but would never forget. No, my friends, I would never forget. Cut to 2014. I'd since learned Padron peppers are seasonal, like the mango, my other favourite summer food, and apart from a few experiences at restaurants my Padron cravings remained largely unfulfilled. Until Richard at Midyim Eco came along. I registered my interest on his website, and at the start of December received an email alert - padrons (and 11 other varieties of peppers) now in stock. I ordered that day. A kilo (a box of around 120 peppers / $32.50) arrived the next day, and I fried up a batch in olive oil til they were blistered, sprinkled them with rock salt, and went to toooooown, son. If you buy make sure you pay your invoice on time because they're a small company and ain't nobody got time to be chasing debtors.

I've been buying padron peppers from Richard for around five years, typically around Christmas time…read morewhen we do a lot of entertaining and want something a little special to serve up to guests. Richard started our growing Padron but he now grows and distributes a huge variety of peppers and chillis form around the world - including interesting Japanese varieties - with his main customers being restaurants. If you're a home-cook and want in on the action you can simply order via email and he will distribute your selection within the week and they'll arrive on your doorstep in a couple of days and then sit happily in your fridge for a couple of weeks. Absolutely worth it if you want larger quantities (minimum order is 1kg) and don't want to pay the super inflated prices at the green grocer for these speciality items.

Midyim Eco - And they have arrived! Can we all appreciate the level of vibrancy in these peppers?? Mix of Padron and Stavros peppers.
