The Short: A great place to take the kids for a sunny day out, and a decadent strawberry ice cream…read more The Long: For the record, we went sans kids. But having two sproutlings, I know that they would have had a great time here. Strawberry Fields supply berries to a number of supermarkets and fruit shops in the Brisbane area. They open their farm up to the public for self-picking. But be prepared: the price you pay in supermarkets is about half the price you'll pay at the farm gate. Even if you do pick them yourself. For example, I can get a 1KG tray at Costco in peak season for about $7 whereas they are selling for $14 at the shop, and at the pick and pay register. I really don't understand why this is, but I'm sure there is a good reason why. Anyway, we picked our tray and also picked up some Jam berries. The Jam berries are two 1KG trays for $6, which were just perfect for us when we were nearly out of frozen stock for our jam reserves. The real highlight for us today was deciding upon a Strawberry Ice Cream. ZOMG these were just delicious. Based on what my wife spied when she was waiting to receive our cones, they use Bulla Extra Creamy Ice Cream as the base, and then throw in huge chunks of strawberries and mix it all up. The result is this soft and creamy ice cream with the most intense strawberry flavour to it. I would be inclined to drive from Caloundra regularly to get one of these suckers. There is a good playground area for the skidlets to run around in and large paddock areas where they can wear out their crazy before flopping back into the car for a sleep on the way home. So if you don't mind paying a bit extra for strawberries in exchange for an "experience", give this farm a go. It's better set up than Rollin Farms with a cafe and good facilities. And there is a Sausage Sizzle on weekends that you can get a cheap lunch for the sproglets (or you, if you fancy a Bunnings Sandwich for lunch).

Nundah Fresh Farmer's Markets - V. pleased with the Indian Food Stall at the Nundah Farmer's Markets. Inexpensive dosai, polas, cholle puri, gulab jamun & more!

I love the fact that South Indian fare in particular is the focus of this stall. Managed by two sweet South Indians who also have a stall at a market in Sunnybank, I tucked in knowing that whatever's on my plate comes from knowledgable hands. Their sambhar and chutney were delicious and went along just right with the freshly prepared dosa and potato vegetable. I hope they include more South Indian fare in the future as Brisbane is sorely lacking in this style of wholesome cuisine. Right now, cholle puri, polas, sada (plain), masala (potato stuffed) & onion dosai are on their menu, apart from gulaab jamun (soft, deep fried flour balls soaked in sugar syrup) & something else I can't remember.

Sandwiched in between (what looks like)…read morelong car-demolition building and the Nundah train station, the stalls continue in a short strip for about 200m, before suddenly ending in a carpark. It's curiously quiet for a market and also for the location: none of the hustle and bustle one usually associates with them. The stalls are typical market fare: a few cupcake stands, a few coffee places, a number of stalls selling fruit and vege. One interesting stand that we've seen a couple of times is simply three people sitting around, praying for people those who ask. We mainly go to satisfy our Sunday morning gyoza cravings at Zagyoza. If you're in Nundah, it's great to have the markets come to you (and presumably some of the small stalls are run by locals, so should be supported!), but otherwise, most of these stalls appear at other markets in Brisbane.

Nundah Fresh Farmer's Markets - Clicked the masala dosa (2 for $10!) after I attacked it. Served with generous sambar & tasty tomato-coconut-onion chutney.
