The BnA program is trash. Unprofessional and ran by ghetto idiots. My daughter tried to go through this program through her high school. The initial deadline was back in July. She had all her requirements and it kept being pushed back. They do not answer emails and no one ever calls back. I placed a complaint and nothing happened. My complaint was about no answers and help. It was resolved by saying I "withdrew my child because they tried to bully her into a Covid shot". Mind you, it is not legally mandated in Illinois. She was told to get exemptions. She had a religious and a note from her doctor and it's an allergy listed in her medical record. They claim they want these kids to succeed, yet play games. They literally told them they accepted more students than they could take, so telling her she could do the program but not have a guaranteed clinical spot was BS. They had no intentions of working with her. So, she will be going through Nirvana's program. Pleas don't waste your time here. I wish that entire program and A Tafoya the worst in life. She's the biggest idiot. I asked her so what do they do with people that are allergic to the vaccine. I was told "idk". That she'd ask someone and have them call me back. Since I came here in the past when it first opened up new. Today though I am here in a different capacity. I am working with vaccines with Covid-19 and I have to admit, security here is tight. As an investigator it is important to be cautious with the transmission of covid at the get go of the day, so any entrance has to be treated for any kind of symptoms. They are on point here. So far within the last hour and a half we've vaccinated way over 150 civilians so this is good. It has become a well oiled machine and I am really impressed with the progress in the last hour. I have been a student here for 5 semesters they have exhausted my financial aid sent me in circles and I have been in school for 3 years pretty much trying to complete a 2 year degree just for them to award me a degree in general studies when I have been declared a science major HOWWWW!!! now when I transfer to my 4 year I will have to pay out of pocket towards the end of my degree. They are incompetent and disrespectful ATTITUDES OUT OF THIS WORLD totally not helpful at all they get paid to sit there because they don't answer the phones! If I can leave 0, I would. The Malcolm X staff is so disrespectful, incompetent, and rude. I've been going to this school since last year and can't wait to graduate. I'm in school for nursing. They have been giving me the run-around for two months just to get into the BNA program. On top of that, I'm getting told incorrect information. This school is so unorganized and inconsistent. I also took the CPR instructor class, and let me tell you, it's definitely not worth the stress. It seems that all staff are purposely rude and inconsiderate of the students' time. On top of everything, I'm paying out of pocket because I have a SAP hold for not finishing courses that were all the way from 2015. I would not recommend this school if you can attend somewhere else. I love that they have totally revamped in constructed a brand new state-of-the-art Inner City Junior College located on the west side which can definitely contend now with some of the other private colleges I myself was a student at the old building which definitely needed an overhaul but my daughter this past summer was able to attend college classes here doing a special pre health summer program A program she was actually mentored and taught by Medical Professional in the surgical program mortuary science program health and nutrition program as well they have a state-of-the-art SIMS lab I am so happy at the Innovation right here in the Inner City it serves as motivation for students who may never get a chance to leave Chicago and who can actually afford to attend read more

Great staff that are always willing to help. Since its a community college in an urban area expect quite a few riff raff (drug dealers, gangs, perverts). When I went they had very lax security so people who didn't even go to the school would walk in and hang out on the couches in the lounges. Or they would come down to the security less computer labs in the basement and watch porn or whatever fetish videos they were into until security on patrol or someone came and kicked them out. At its heart most of the students are fun and you'll enjoy yourself while you're there. They even offer G.E.D. classes to currently incarcerated felons which I found interesting. My one big gripe is that the library and upper level computer lab dictators are a pain. They are pretty much a bunch of nerds getting paid minimum wage that take their "jobs" waaaaaay too seriously. Monitoring what everyone is doing on their computer and if you even look at a deodorant commercial they take control, close it out then walk over to you and tell you you're going to have to leave if you continue. read more

If I could give 0 stars i most definitely would again since Malcom x college decided to delete my review on Google.There always seems to be a problem when it comes to accurate information with anything involving this school. I re enrolled in Malcom x to pursue the mammography technologist program. I was then told I had to take a placement test and then pre reqs. When I tried to apply for classes they told me there was absolutely none available at Malcom x or any other city colleges (which was a lie.) I recently found out that there was in fact a math 118 class that I needed available via zoom, after speaking with someone at Harold Washington college. This particular school (harold Washington) said I needed to change my academic planning to degree seeking in order to use my financial aid for the class. Also, that I needed to speak with an advisor at Malcom x to do so. I called over the phone and waited over an hour to speak with someone from advising, they changed it to degree seeking and I was told that I should be able to take my classes with no problem now because the financial aid should cover it. I also spoke with someone else from the department of financial aid ( Dave Addams) and he said the class should be covered. Now to insure that everything had gone through successfully I decide to to go up to Malcom X college so that I could know when the payment would post on my account for the class. I now ended up speaking with a financial adviser in person at Malcom x ( Tenika burnes ) and she now has told me that I can't take the class or use the financial aid because according to them I'm not "degree seeking" and I can't use it for pre requisite classes ( That of which i already had gotten changed to by an advisor at this school). I have taken pre requisite classes before and I've never had this problem because the financial aid covered it. So, all of a sudden now when I'm trying to take classes they are denying me saying I can't use the financial aid, that I was awarded for my classes when I specifically spoke with 2 people from the school saying the money is covered for the class and also that I'm now a degree seeking student. This school is unprofessional and I'm not sure if it's discrimination or what but i will be taking action. I would never recommend this place unless you like dealing with problem. read more

They are for the most part a regular community college. The only issues I had were 1. During covid full time tuition went up from a flat rate of $1752 to over $2300, this made no sense because we were using less resources and had less hands-on instruction. They also did this out of nowhere. 2. They portrayed themselves to be a black community college but it is definitely more helpful to Latin students. The #of scholarships for black student is almost nonexistent but Latin students had a packet of opportunities. This is very disappointing. read more

This school is your typical inner city two year college that is underfunded and understaffed. And entering it is like going into an airport. There is a lot of security. That said, the school has some very good points. For one, the money that it is has is going into building new facilities. Also, many of the old facilities are great, like the theater department, which boasts a large stage and seating for a big audience. The interior of the school is dark and windowless. But there are lots of services offered, and the student service center is large and often full. It may only be a two year college, but Malcom X offers a great opportunity for young people from the inner city to acquire a few more tools and skills to help them make it in this world. There is plenty of parking and public transportation nearby. And the teaching staff is a devoted group of people: I know a few of them, and they truly work hard for an insufficient salary. read more

Don't be bamboozled like me! This is not the community college you want to go to for a good education at a cheap price. Go elsewhere for your post-secondary/continuing education/adult education/certification classes. This place will leave you full of regrets and bitterness - just like their staff. They are so mean, ignorant, and intentionally unhelpful that simple tasks and questions lead to multiple trips back to their campus for something that would have taken 5 minutes for a caring, knowledgeable, person to address. In other words, they will waste your time as if you have an infinite amount of time to waste. Therefore, if you work or have a family, attending this "school" will leave you majorly stressed because the staff FAILS to inform students of important information regarding prerequisites, deadlines, documents, rules, procedures, etc necessary to make informed choices that lead to success in their programs. The trend amongst the administrative departments of Malcolm X is to tell you what you need after the fact, then penalize you for not knowing, when it was their job to inform you when you asked in the first place prior to the deadline. This place is a bureaucratic hell hole. It's like a college operated by the DMV. If you like paying money to be treated like shit, this is the "school" for you. read more

This place is just awful. The worst city college in the group. You have to show your ID when you enter the building. Just any ID will do. I'm not sure how this at all helps with security considering you can still just walk in. Also, I'm going to class, not jail or some high level area. Stop treating me like I'm here to commit a crime. - Also they never told me this until half way through the semester and the one security guard wouldn't let me go to my lecture. Are you kidding me!? You also have to pay to print anything out in the computer lab, even if the class requires it! Wright college doesn't do this. I think it is important to note that City Colleges of Chicago are in the process of building a NEW Malcolm X College building for Health Sciences. With that going on, it appears that they've let this current building fall apart. The building itself is very interesting. It is easy to get lost in because it is a solid, old rectangular building with no big windows on the second and third floors, no major markers, and everything looks the same. The walls are covered with many murals -- Some are very beautiful, mostly inspired by African folk art, and some very controversial (eg. a mural of African slaves brutally attacking and murdering white slave owners), so it makes for an interesting walk through the halls. MXC is great for Health Sciences, so if you are looking for a degree or to fulfill prereqs, you will get more out of MXC than other city colleges. MXC works very closely with UIC and Rush Medical School, which opens a lot of doors for their students. There are so many great professors here. When registering for classes, try to AVOID adjunct professors. My experience has been that adjunct professors here are completely disorganized and your education will suffer as a result. The full time professors will push you, challenge you, and are fully invested in your education. The campus is extremely diverse, and this really benefits the learning environment. When you are studying the health sciences, it is extremely important to be able to work in groups of people with various backgrounds and point of views so you are not "stuck" in one way of thinking. Many of the students here are older, have already entered the work force and are now returning to continue their education. Overall, positive experience. read more

I don't like this school for my own reasons, but I'll explain what I've observed since I've been going here for two years now. (Im Planning on leaving here soon) The Student Body: Its not very diverse. The majority of the people that go here are black, some spanish, and very few asians, indians and whites. It's a very ghetto school. You'll find some people sagging their pants, yelling down the hallway, singing rap songs aloud, and a lot of drop outs. There's also some people who refuse to speak with proper grammar. I've met some cool people while I've been here, but I find it hard to make close friends simply because I'm not ghetto. There's also a lot of obese people here who walk around like penguins. The Teachers and faculty: I've come across some excellent teachers. I've also had some unmotivated teachers, which makes me wonder why they've decided to become teachers in the first place, and quite a few foreign teachers who are knowledgable when teaching, but have heavy accents. Some of the faculty here have bad attitudes. The veteran representatives are pretty nice though. (I'm a Veteran) The building: The building has 4 floors including the basement, and is rectangular, which gets confusing sometimes. The gym is very small, and the basketball court is mainly reserved for the basketball team. The lunch room can get a bit hectic at times. You'll find people being really loud, horse-playing, and randomly one time there was an open mike and students with no talent were rapping, which was very annoying. The food in the cafeteria gets a bit pricey, although there are daily specials like a hotdog, drink, and a bag of chips for roughly $3.36. The books in the books store are very expensive. Sometimes there's a bum, who somehow gets pass security with all his bags and sits in the lunch room and sleeps. My experience with the professors has been overwhelmingly positive, which is obviously a large part of the college experience. However, the staff in the business office, financial aid, and veterans affairs office are completely unprofessional, disorganized, and unqualified. They have consistently proven to be incapable of performing their duties of turning in paperwork in a timely manner and answering even simple questions. Specifically when money is involved, colleges are typically very responsive to questions and at the very least, have someone answer phones. Over the past 6 months, no one has answered the phones when I've called. I've often had to email multiple people or wait 2-3 weeks for a call back. Dealing with the staff at this place is the most draining experience ever, specially when asking regarding financial aid and refunds. I am currently experiencing financial hardship and expected a refund from MAP grant for Fall 22. I emailed financial aid-received a bogus response until someone THAT CHECKED THE ACCOUNT provided me with correct information. I was referred to the business office. Again, MY ACCOUNT WAS NOT CHECKED, and I was provided with information that was inaccurate. I asked for an apology via email and the woman responded with no apology or no responsibility for her not checking my account. Stated that I SHOULD TELL THEM WHAT I NEED AND FOR WHAT TERM. First of all, why do you need to ask my Student ID-TO CHECK THE ACCOUNT!!!! I am absolutely insulted that they think I am this stupid and I received no apology yet. As I stepped into Malcolm x college, I had to go through security in order to register. The security guard was very unprofessional, he was complaining to another employee in front of me saying, "i need a freakin coffee or a freakin tea, shit!" Very unprofessional! Where do they think they working at? Walmart?! I don't feel comfortable having these "securities" securing the school I'll be attending. As a former student at Malcolm-X and Wright College, I was excited about Malcolm-X getting a brand new campus. I was also studying to get my state professional license but my home computer broke down. Being a former Malcolm-X student, I thought I can use its library facilities at the new campus as I did before. Well I arrived to the library to use one of the computers to study for my professional license exam. I realized that now and unlike before you have to have a login number to use the computers at Malcolm-X. I asked the librarian, a rude Jewish guy is there any way I can use the computer even though I was a former student. The librarian rudely said, "Oh you can't because you are not a student here anymore". I continued to ask is there any computer lab that I can use? He continued to rudely say no. Disappointed, I just quietly studied with no computer. At least I had a license test preparation book that I can study for the time being but I could not do any practice exams. I made the best of my time even though I was not too happy. Well after about several hours, I decided to take a break from studying. I decided to take a tour of the campus. Well first of all, the officials are rude and I mean just fucking downright rude. Even when I entered the campus, the security guards there were fucking rude when one of them asked me for an ID. I said I had no student ID. However this security guard at the Damen Avenue entrance of the campus, when I was just about to leave after being rejected entrance to the school, said all I needed was a state ID, which I had. He then finally let me in. Now during my exploration of the University, I checked out their athletic center. Yes it was very beautiful, however I got locked in and could not leave. I was lucky that a student passing by helped open the door to let me out. Now I wanted to get back to the library but the security guard that was at the Jackson Boulevard entrance would not let me in. He was rude, and unprofessional. Since the school was close to closing, I decided not to argue and I just left the campus. So basically I wasted a day of good studying thinking I was coming to a new campus with a positive attitude only to leave with a bad and negative experience of the new Malcolm-X college. Now contrast this with the other City College of Chicago being Wright College on the North side of Chicago. Unlike the arrogant Malcolm-X college they have computers at their library that people can use without a login number. Their security staff, let alone the entire staff at Wright College are professional but friendly. Yes Wright College have rules but guess what? Unlike the officials at Malcolm-X they don't make you feel less than human when they remind you of those rules. My experience at Wright College as opposed to Malcolm-X is nothing short of positive. My experience at Malcolm-X is very sad and negative. It is very shameful for a college to get a new campus that shows so much positivity outside but in the inside it wreaks of negativity, arrogance and treating its students and the surrounding community as individuals less than human. I'm a Black professional that went to Malcolm-X campus years ago. I'm now in the health field trying to get a professional license. I thought Malcolm-X which is primarily for the Black population can at least have a few computers for people in the community to use that does not require a login access code. Yes, I understand that Malcolm-X have to watch out for suspicious people with suspicious behavior, vandalism and the like. However there are cameras all over the new Malcolm-X campus. If they can put all those cameras, they could at least put up some paltry money from their humongous budget, get a computer lab and put cameras all over the computer lab. In addition with its vast army of security personal, you can't tell me the arrogant and classism individuals at Malcolm-X can tell that borderline abusive and lazy security staff to put a security officer in that computer lab to watch people using the computers? They do it at Wright Junior college on the North Side of Chicago? Why can't Malcolm-X do it? Here is what it comes down to with this "New Malcolm-X". What supposed to be a hope for the Black community has become nothing but a negative episode of classism. We in the Black community badly need something positive and Malcolm-X College is supposed to be that positive beacon. However with the experience of being treated less than a human at this campus, I will NEVER EVER EVER go back to Malcolm-X again! The people that run this campus are too exclusive, arrogant, classism oriented, negative and petty. No wonder why it was so empty when I went there. People don't feel welcomed at this new campus because I sure was not. I guess I will stay at Wright College. Malcolm-X has become too arrogant and too much classism for me. I love Malcolm X College! ... I do hate how people often ask me why are you going there isint that school in the south side? In the guetto? ... uhhh no! This school has some of the best Nursing programs wether your going to get your CNA certificate EMT certificate this college will accomodate your schedule. The application process for the RN LPN or PA programs are not difficult. HOWEVER! .... they need better counselors! ... if you come here not knowing what you want to do or what direction to head in you best believe counselors will put you in classes you will not need to apply for whatever program you want to get in. read more

Worst excuse for an education I have ever seen in my life. Students refuse to learn and are disruptive in class. The disruption is so bad I feel that it prevents many of rhe instructors from teaching, therefore if you are paying for your education out-of-pocket, then you might as well kill yourself. It's money wasted. I got all A's for the semester and went to class everyday. Other's didn't show up for class, didn't participate, and didn't care, still passed with a B. Are you ducking serious? Disability office is quick to take your money and quick to hide out and not provide any service whatsoever. The malcolm x faculty and staff are complete idiots and I saw why there was so much violence in chicago. Stupid people need to be shot. Life is what you make it. I admit, when I first approached MXC in August of 2013, I was met with unprofessionalism from some of the staff in Admissions . There were those that seemed to have a chip on their shoulders in Financial Aid. In Advising, I felt I was prejudged. I did not allow that to sway me, and I took the necessary steps to register. Once I met the faculty, things changed. Instructors cannot help but to appreciate students that yearn for knowledge. My first class, Intro to Literature, was taught by an Instructor named Carleta Alston. I owe a great deal to Ms. Alston because little did she know, but she helped to restore the self confidence I had somehow lost due to bad decision making(I joined MXC after doing 5 years in prison). Her calm demeanor and assuring approach to the teaching/ learning experience restored my faith in humanity. Ms. Alston is not the only one. All of my Instructors treated me honorably. In African History, Dr. Rufai nourished our minds in a nurturing way, even while lecturing on material laced with conflicts. He afforded us a healing virtue, in my opinion. In English 102, Dr. Rudds challenged our minds to look deeper and view things from the broad scope. She boosted my confidence by allowing me to approach a subject on research that was dear to my heart. She gave us the tools to succeed, by asking for nothing short of our best. My Pre-Calculus instructor, Ms. Sheppard, broke down the rate of change in precise detail. Even without taking the requisites (I had passed an equivalent course to the requisite College Algebra), she was able to put things in a perspective that allowed be to get an A. Half of that was me, but the other half was her expert instruction in the subject matter. Khadi King, to me was an unforgettable instructor. He brought the Humanities to life. He broke down the rich history of ancient civilizations and how we use art, culture, artifacts, and language to gain a better understanding of human trials and triumphs. Every time I think of the word magnanimity, I cannot help but to reflect on the readings from Khadi King's class, and his approach to imparting the knowledge. As you can tell, I was richly blessed by my attendance at MXC, and I graduated with a 4.0 to show for it. This was after doing five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Now yes, part of my success came from my own inner desire, but the ability to achieve high honors came from my instructors' belief in me and their love for sharing knowledge. I must also mention Dr. Easley, the VP, who knew me by name, and was always willing to make herself available to students. Even though there were a few bumps along the way (the culture of most "black" institutions will have bumps), MXC helped me to harness the skills that will forever help me to understand my important place on this American landscape. read more

It's cheap and on the blue line. Not to far of a bike ride or drive if you live in wicker park, logan, bucktown etc. and they have free parking. It's safe as well. Admin is just as bad as most of the city colleges, but not as bad as HWC. Point is I'd rather go here than HWC. Teachers are just as good and it is easier to get to and navigate. read more

Went to Malcolm X to take placement test and get everything ready to go for the 2016 fall semester. I've read some pretty terrible reviews on Yelp and Google so needless to say I was pretty nervous upon arrival. The staff at the front desk were very kind and gave me correct directions to the testing room. The staff that we're helping all the students take the placement test were very nice and give clear directions. The women in administration were all kind and my experience was good, not to mention the new school it's absolutely beautiful and I'm so excited to start my classes at Malcolm X. Contrary to what I've read here, I think this place is fantastic! - at least for contuining ed classes :) I'm taking an EMT class, and I've had very positive experiences. Professor Thorpe is caring and involved, class runs fluidly, and the program has long standing affiliations with good hospitals around the city. I transferred here from a different college recently and all they've given me is a hard time. The people that work here don't really seem to care too much about the students. Despite bad reviews I decided to give them a chance and I wish I didn't. Don't even waste time trying to contact them through phone or email because they won't answer and once you go in there yourself be prepared to spend hours trying to get your issue resolved no matter how small. There's always something one of the faculty knew about that another didn't. I got the run around and spent my time going in and out of the financial aid department. I've never had this bad of an experience at a college that I felt compelled to write my review. read more

Free teacher resource room and parking....need I say more???

I am a new student at Malcolm X college and so far I have to say, I am somewhat pleased. I, of all people, am happy with my professor's. Their style or way of teaching the material is interesting and thought provoking. I hope, *fingers crossed*, it continues on this way throughout the semester. read more
