It's been years since I've been back to eat Malaysia Cafe's food. The Char Kway Teow does have different noodles and taste a little different than how I remembered it when I was in college. Noodles were cooked perfectly with a slight chew, the bean sprouts added the perfect crunch, and the smoky taste that you could tell was wok cooked at first bite made the dish. I do wish it was a tad more saucy and had more meat. They may have changed hands over the years but regardless, it was still pretty good. The Chicken Satay and Maylasia Pancakes with their sauces were even better than I remembered them. I could honestly use the sauces/ curry on everything, it's that tasty. The gal at the front taking orders was very kind and had a good attitude. I ordered to go and the food was out quick. There are tables and chairs if you want to sit there to eat. Cost was reasonable. I do plan to come by more often when I'm in the area to expand to my favorites list. Especially since there are so many different options that look great! read more

I ordered the pad thai. The flavor profile was sweet, and savory while not being overpowering. A very balanced flavor along with great textural components from the peanuts and bean sprouts. The lime squeeze added an acidic taste which helped balance out the rick flavor. Cheers! read more

I've been eating at Malaysia Cafe for over 20 years. A friend from the company I was working for in 1999 brought me here and introduced me to Malaysian Rice Noodles and char-kway-to. Essentially fast food Asian. Our meals had decent flavor and a reasonable amount of food for the price. I wasn't impressed with the broccoli shrimp. I'll probably try a different protein next time. My wife enjoyed her sesame chicken. In a town devoid of really good Asian p/Chinese restaurants, this is about as good as we've found and will become our go to restaurant. My wife especially like their crab Rangoon, and she's overly picky about that side. They do have limited seating if you want to dine in, but it's nothing special. read more

As someone who was looking for a bit of home (I'm Chinese American from San Francisco), I decided to try out Malaysia Cafe and their chicken and salted fish fried rice. It's the ultimate comfort for my Cantonese self and I was hopefully curious about their version. Upon entering, the place is very casual and a bit small but was bright and clean. You order first at the register and then choose a place to sit. There are pictures of the menu items on the left wall if you need them. Definitely seems more like a fast food kind of experience. Even though I ordered for dine-in, the meal still came in a non-styrofoam to-go container which was fine since I wasn't going to finish it all at the restaurant. The fried rice was darker than I usually see (more soy sauce?) and saltier but still very tasty. The chicken was thigh meat so that's always a plus for me. The fish seemed nonexistent though with only a subtle hint of that heavenly salted fish flavor. I'm used to the dish having small chunks of the fish that you can visibly see which made me question whether I received the correct dish at first. I still found it difficult to find my fish pieces so the higher price seems unnecessary when I can't find one piece of fish. The dish is usually greasy as Chinese food goes but this version was definitely greasier than usual. I believe this place is a solid 3.5/5 but I am rounding up for now since I really only tried one dish. I'm open to going again to try more but unfortunately, I won't be in town much longer. I'm currently visiting from Kansas City where I can find some of my beloved chicken and salted fish fried rice. read more

Legit Malaysian food and good, honest cooking. Really enjoyed our visit. The Char Kway Teow didn't disappoint, and the BBQ chicken special had a great balance of spice, sweet, and salt. The steamed dumplings (another special) were soft and flavorful. Very nice all around. You can tell this place has been in operation for awhile from the flavor of the dishes; the seasoning on their cooktop (wok hei) adds a lot, and it's impossible to replicate at home. It pains me to leave a 2 star rating, but the food we had on 3/22 was just not good. I have been coming here for years, and for years my favorite dish in the entire city was the Char Kway Teow. It's usually an amazing dish full of wide rice noodles and delicious steak, chicken and shrimp. Last night was such a let down. Some of the chicken tasted off. The whole dish was topped with what looked like tiny tiny bits of steak. There were some regular pieces of steak, but it's like they scraped the wok and put all the bits on the dish. Everything was just a little soggy, and that famous 'wok hei' that makes this dish so good wasn't there. It's like a hibachi chef made this dish. Just wasn't good. We wanted to order some sides, but I about fell over when I saw they want $10 for 6 crab rangoon. TEN BUCKS! LOL. I know prices are going up everywhere, but this is laughable at best. So sadly, Malaysia Cafe is out of the rotation. Wichita. A thousand asian takeout restaurants, and none worth going to. :( read more

When I think of Asian cuisines, my mind doesn't typically wander to Malaysia, a country whose presence I probably could have not pointed out on a map prior to eating here. In doing so, however, I learned about a country whose culinary heritage is a gumbo of influences from other countries in the are thanks to Malaysia being part of ancient spice routes. It explains why you might encounter a dish like hokkien mee, fried noodles cooked in the style of the Fujian province of China. For Wichita purposes, it was simply some udon noodles stir-fried with some chicken, beef, shrimp, and a collection of sprouts and other veg, but I'm a sucker for some good noodles, and these were some good noodles. I ordered an appetizer of "Malaysian pancakes," which upon further research were roti canai, an unleavened flatbread that has its roots in Indian cuisine. It's traditionally quickly fried in oil, as it was here, but it was a little greasy, which is probably why they sell it as a pancake and not a pita-sorta thing that implies you pick it up with your hands. Given my decidedly non-Asian heritage, I savor any restaurant that can teach me something about their cuisine, and while I'm sure the hokkien mee is better in Kuala Lumpur, I could slurp those thick, soft noodles from Malaysia Cafe all day. read more

In addition to Malaysian food, Malaysian Cafe serves Asian dishes from a variety of different cultures. Really though, as the name implies, it's a place for Malaysian and does a much better job with its native cuisine than it does with its boring Chinese offerings. For those who don't know, Malaysian food is similar to a lot of other Asian cuisines, with Chinese (authentic Chinese, not mall-food) and Korean being the closest. You know, stir-fried veggies and un-breaded meats served on rice with a nice, flavorful sauce. Not as intimidating as it might at first appear. My advice is to get something from the Malaysian side of the menu, as their other dishes are pretty ho-hum. The Char Kway Teow, which is something of a national dish for Malaysia, is superb here. It's basically deliciously sitr-fried beef, chicken, and pork with bean sprouts, green onions, jalapenos, and wide noodles in a rich, salty sauce reminiscent of Korean barbeque. A simple meal, but very satisfying. Unfortunately, most of the meals offered as lunch specials, which actually are very reasonably priced, are Chinese. They're decent, but nothing special, and if you only ever ate lunch here you might not get to try the things for which the restaurant should really be known. And that would be a shame. Portions are large and the prices are really low, which means, considering how good the food can be, that this is an excellent value for the money. On the downside, everything gets dished out in styrofoam containers, which probably doesn't effect the flavor of the food but it just seems, I don't know, lazy somehow. And, without a soda fountain, soft drinks are sold by the bottle. Not a deal-breaker but it's something to keep in mind when ordering. read more

Been going here since I was a kid, and despite it called "Malaysian Cafe," it beats every Chinese restaurant in town.

I have been coming here for over 10 years! My go to dish here is the Hokkien Char Mee! It's definitely one of my guilty pleasures that I indulge in from time to time. Be careful if you do not like seafood as there is shrimp in it! I personally like seafood but didn't realize it when I brought a coworker here. It slipped my mind but in my defense, she said that it was absolutely delicious and her eyes lit up despite not realizing there was seafood in it! Some of my friends will often cater this dish for their parties as well and it's the first thing I go for when I see it! Quick fresh and delicious! read more

It's been a go-to restaurant since college. Great selection of Malaysian/Chinese cuisine for carry out or dine in (even though seating is limited). Hokkien Char Mee and any fried rice are safe bets. They're consistent with quality. Only downside is they can get very busy during lunch and can be hard to place to go orders. read more

I ordered chicken chow mein as takeaway, so can't comment on the dine in experience. I asked for it to be spicy, it was not. The chicken chow mein had no noodles in it. It was literally just chicken, sprouts, and veggies. There were 3-4 (not exaggerating) short, crispy noodles on top. I was expecting some form of noodles, particularly stir-fried, but this had nothing. Thanks goodness it came with fried rice, but all in all, where was what I ordered? They should specify if they make chow mein in a different manner to the rest of the world. Chow mein is a noodle dish, by definition. It's similar to ordering chicken fried rice and then getting a meal that has no rice! Ridiculous. Won't be trying them again. read more

This is one of my favorite places to go to when I am hungry! I usually order pineapple fried rice and/or char kuay teow. Soooo good. I love their spicy soy sauce, too! I think I add that to everything I've ever ordered there. All in all, I would highly recommend getting the char kuay teow if you like noodles. Also, noodles are stir-fried carelessly with clumps of strips of rice cakes together even though there was generous amount of oil in there. So disappointed. Being native to Malaysia, I would only give their food a pass. I've been wary of their hygiene levels in the kitchen as I have heard things from previous employees but it is true that you get ok big portions of food at low prices. Ok, first off I'm not sure who has complained about their cleanliness. I ate here two nights ago and the restaurant was spotless. This is a local gem that has had the same owners for 20 years. I live in LA now and if you can find a place that serves better cooked to order Chinese food (or Malaysian food) than this at their prices, anywhere in the country, then more power to you. I don't know of one. Wichitans you need to support places like this. You are lucky to have them. read more
