Brilliant show- clean comedy and fun atmosphere!! The show is themed on two different teams competing and I believe it gives you an opportunity to relate with one or the other style!! I suppose it depends on the night you are here. We were here for the 10pm show on Saturday because you get to see the midnight "risque" show for free. This is like "Whose Line Is It Anyway," where the teams play improv games and there is a winner at the end (although the points matter here). As a whole, the show was kind of chaotic. It was hard to hear what was going on and many times the performers just devolved into screaming and yelling. There was one portion where the performers had to invent a game based on a sentence from the audience. The game ended up involving the other team lifting members of the performing team into the air and the performer suddenly singing. I have no idea what anyone said the entire time. Sometimes the performers were overly hammy, dancing and throwing their bodies around the stage every time music played. "The Hot Karl" was the midnight show. It featured many of the same performers riffing on a a suggestion from the audience for about 40 minutes (there is no audience participation after this first suggestion, so it's kind of nice to sit back and not worry you are going to be called on). There were only 40 or so of us, so it was more intimate, and it was nice that the performers had more time to develop characters and recurring jokes. Yet much of the adult nature of the show felt forced, with random references to body parts or sexual acts thrown in just because the show was supposed to be dirty. There were certainly very funny moments in the show, the staff was friendly, and the drinks were reasonable. The ref was great - he reminded me of Ben Bailey from Cash Cab. They just need more of the discipline and wit that you see at some of the other improv theaters. read more

Have you watched Wild'n Out and enjoyed it? Then you'll LOVE ComedySportz! ComedySportz is an improv show that has two teams compete to make you laugh. I've been many times. It's one of those places that when someone I know is visiting from out of town, I try to bring them here. I've seen lots of different games/competitions but am glad they always do 5 things. 5 things is hard to explain but lots of fun to watch! I have literally never left without having a good time. But I'm also not scared to get involved. The more involved you are (or at least someone at your table), the better time you'll have. I also got to meet BonQuiQui (Anjelah Johnson) one time because she was also in the audience enjoying the show!! The improv actors are hilarious, the bar stuff is kind and attentive...I cannot say a bad thing about this place or the show. read more

I had attended a Yelp event and performance in 2008 (wow that long ago already?) so I was certainly familiar with the concept of ComedySportz. Two teams of comics battle it out to be the funniest side of the evening. Unlike some places, there does not seem to be any drink minimum here, so my +1 and I each had one drink. We were also put on the spotlight at one point because we were too slow with the coordinated audience hand actions, so after the mild scolding we each scored free tickets to a future show. We were here the night before Halloween, so it was a fun and "scary" but ultimately harmless good time. read more

A good time is always had at ComedySportz. I have been coming about once or twice a year since I was in high school. The performers are talented and the staff is very friendly. Drinks are somewhat overpriced, but that is expected in a venue such as this. We had visitors from out of town yesterday and they just loved the performance as well. They had never seen improv, and they liked what they saw. I had to take a star off because the server gave my fiance's sister the wrong credit card. She went back to the theatre once she realized what happened. They tried to make it right, but she still had to cancel her card. I applaud them in being professional about the matter. read more

I recently started visiting Comedysportz because of a round robin stand up comedy contest they had going on for 11 weeks. I believe a few of the comics had said it was the first time this theater offered a time for stand up comedians to perform, however from the older reviews that sounds wrong. The contest, week after week was a big hit for me. I brought friends and they dug it as well, good times. Shows were $10 and if you got there early you could (sometimes) find a discount coupon. In Chicago if you can find good, funny improv / comedy for that price, you might as well just pay full price. Good shows, good people. The auditorium can fit about 100 people, seating next to the stage comprises of round tables seating 2-5 people comfortably. Obviously sitting here, you may become a part of their show. On a short step above is some more of the same style of table seating with two tiers of very uncomfortable side by side flat back bench type of seats. With a bit of cushion, if you ain't got any booty, it's not comfortable. During many of the shows I attended I was given a slip to write down my fav character / comedian and email address. At the end of the show there was a drawing to win a pair of tickets to future shows at any of their locations. (Note: they read out your email address, to avoid spam, how about making up an e-mail addy, funny like.. "IamWeetahdid@funnymail.com") Sometimes people do this and the MC realizes it and calls your ass out on it. Funny. Comedysportz has a bar available before and during shows they have staff waiting tables. Year round they offer nightly specials on beer and alcohol. My fav is found, Foster's Keg can a bit more expensive than your corner liquor store, but, $4 for a keg can. Bangin. Parking out front is hard to come by. Try parking on Sheffield, a block south you'll find alot of parking on most weekdays. Otherwise head East on Belmont past Halsted, if you don't mind a brisk walk ample parking can be found over there by a school. read more

I love watching stand-up and ventured through freezing conditions in order to get my comedy fix while in Chicago. This low-key stand-up session featured local comedians, none of whom I had heard before, for only $10 and no drink minimum. We didn't need to get there early. Doors weren't open until about 8 pm, and the crowd was very small. I enjoyed most of the sets and appreciated the diversity in topics. It seemed like 80% of the comics were 25 years old, so I was glad when not every joke was about dating. The host was just the right amount of awkward to be entertaining. I only wish there were more options for snacks. Don't forget to enter the raffle - you might win a free drink! read more

OK, before you read my original post, I have to say don't go to see the hot karl. Not worth the wait and it's kind of boring. This place is awesome. I was out in the town with my friend from out of town and we were trying to think of things to do after a nice quiet dinner, and I kept thinking let's go to an improv club. Well Second city was sold out, but I kept thinking I keep seeing comedy sportz as I ride the train every morning, maybe it's worth a shot. We called the place and got our tickets will call, and didn't have to pay extra fees for doing it by phone, which was awesome. We ended up seeing an early show, but it was great nonetheless. So funny, and I'm sure if I went back it would still be really fun because each show is different because of the differing crowds and suggestions. I am interested in going to the late night show just to see the difference in topics covered, it's supposed to be for adults, so that could be fun. I took the train here, and it was directly off the Belmont stop, but I have a feeling that if I drive there I wont be able to find parking, which is the only drawback. Otherwise an awesome place to go for a fun laid back night. read more

Man, the only thing that stopped me from walking out of the show was my friends....they hated it too but felt it would be rude to just get up and leave. I will admit, I went for my first time for a yelp event and LOVED the show. I thought it was hilarious. Perhaps they were just putting on a great show bc they knew that the room was filled with people who have no qualms about giving their 2 cents on yelp? The show was NOT FUNNY whatsoever. I was quite embarrassed that I dragged my friends so far up north just to waste their time. My fiance and I went here for free, thanks to the Belly App. Otherwise it would have been $24/person. When we arrived in the bar/waiting area, there were free philly steak sandwiches from Philly's Best. That was a pleasant surprise! They were pretty good. My fiance got some hero drink, something else... and I got the Chicago Sunrise. They were good! The entertainment was okay. I like how the cast tried to interact with the crowd as much as possible. Both comedy teams put in a lot of effort and you could tell they loved what they were doing and really tried hard to please the crowd. I thought this was more of a kid/family friendly show which to me is not as funny as an adult show. Overall, it was an okay experience! read more

I have to eat my words now... The Hot Karl was more like hot crap. I didn't get it, probably because I wasn't drunk off my rocker like 90% of the people attending this midnight show. I'm giving it 3 stars only because the other shows are great and if you avoid the midnight show you'll be holding your side. ComedySportz has always been able to make me laugh. This time I went to the 6pm show and it honestly didn't measure up. There were a lot of families with younger kids so it was very censored. They kept asking the kids for suggestions which to be honest were pretty lame. Almost every suggestion was sport related like basketball, soccer, skiing... come on people get a little more creative! My major issue with ComedySportz is the scorekeeper... she couldn't keep up with the points.. which doesn't seem like that difficult of the job so by the end of the show the scores were basically a fabrication. I know this is all fun and games and not a real competition, but it bothered me nonetheless. I want to go to a later show. The comedians were great 5 stars for them... but the audience was pretty lame. read more

I have been to many comedy performances in the past and this one ranks in the top three for me! It was very funny, clean, and much more afordable than other places. The only downside was that I felt that it was too short! Anyway, its in a great location with transporation and food. I might even go back for a class or two :) read more

For a girl who laughs at everything, I found this place a riot (especially since I actively participated and was able to include Sean Connery in the whole process:D This was one of the things-to-do for a friend's birthday get together, so I was weary of it. Comedy clubs in general can either be a hit or miss, but this place was actually some good times! The place was split into two teams, (hence, the 'comedysportz' theme); while specific comedians weren't funny (and they really tried to be), the tasks they do will either cause you to chuckle to slapping your knees. The place doesn't aggressively pursue you in purchasing alcoholic beverages - I didn't get anything; the place is cozy enough and small enough for everyone to get a good view of the stage. The actors won't force you to participate if you don't want to - you have the option to sit on the sidelines and just watch. Some friends were visiting Chicago for the first time, so of course I had to determine a Chicago-centric guide. Other than food, one of the things I had on the list of things to do was a comedy show. Second City, being the large, famous name as it is, was incredibly difficult to get tickets to, but luckily, Yelp pointed me to this small theater on Belmont. This show was fantastic - I really enjoyed it, and my friends thought it was hysterical as well. It's kind of like "Whose Line" and all the performers were incredibly talented. There are $10 student rush seats, and it was totally worth it. Definitely recommend! read more

I went here for a friend's bachloretter party last summer. Here sister (the maid-of-honor) wasn't 21 yet which excluded any bars, and the three of us (me, my friend, and her sister) had previously been the the ComedySportz in Milwaukee and enjoyed ourselves. We were all pretty disappoint, particularly the three of us who had been the the Milwaukee location. First of all, everyone had a difficult time finding the place as it wasn't clearly marked. Parking was also an issue. The space is nice, but it had almost a formal theater feel to it. As we were waiting to be admitted to the theater close to 100 (or more) high school-age kids came pooring in the doors. (We later found out it Northwestern's NHSI group.) The kids were all incredibly obnoxious in the show. They kept yelling out some inside joke (I don't remember what it was) as a suggestion, and it got to the point where the actors started using it frequently. The high schoolers were rolling with laughter, but for the portion of the audience that wasn't 16 years old, it wasn't funny at all. (We did eventually ask one of the kids behind us what it meant and he told us it was like a code word for masturbation.) Even without the actors pandering to the high school kids, I still didn't find it to be as funny as what I'd seen at the Milwaukee location. I would be willing to give this place another chance, but I would make sure there were no field trips coming on that night! If you're in the Milwaukee area though, I'd suggest visiting that ComedySportz read more

I went to comedysportz theatres with a friend. I must say, this place was is legit. I guess I'm a little biased because we had free food and free drinks, courtesy of yelp. But the entertainment was great. The improv was good. It was clean. The crowd was good. Minus some inappropriate people. But you'll always have one of those here and there. But the comedy was great. I had a great time. Surprisingly laughed out loud numerous times from clean fun humor. Nothing dirty. I do warn you though, you will get humiliated if you say something dirty. The performers were hilarious (two really stood out and continually made me laugh out loud), they really bring you into the show. We went on a Thursday night. I liked the family show more than the adult show afterwards. Thursday night was this amateur hill billy family (I forgot their show name). It was funny at some parts, but the majority of it was kind of sad. It was like they were trying too hard to be funny. Or maybe they are funny and they just had a bad/small audience that night. The wait staff was attentive and made sure were didn't need anything throughout the night. The show itself was funny and made for a good laugh. The troupe interacted with the audience quite a bit which made it even better. However, I'm not sure we would pay full price to go back, but who knows. read more

Went here for a performance of "the Dirty Sanchez" and had a great time. Comedians were hilarious, lots of dick and fart jokes I LOVE THAT STUFF!!! (That is also what the dirty Sanchez strives for so if you don't like that sort of thing be gone with you). The bar makes really strong drinks...a plus when you are going to an improv performance at midnight on a Saturday that claims to be the dirtiest comedy show in Chicago. They strongly encourage responsible belligerence and drunkeness. They are also drinking on stage, while unprofessional I like drunk comedy. I fealt that the show was a bit short (bout 45 mins) for 10 bucks, other than that I had a great time, was able to mingle and booze with the comedians after the show. The staff has a great time while they are at work and that is something that I like to see when I go have a good time on the town...I love seeing happy people....employees included. read more

At a 10 pm Friday show, a group of ten of us...Lots of fun! We stayed for the midnight show. Really great time. The more you participate, the more fun it is (at least it was that way for us). My only issue is the bar... I'm not sure what they used in my "Well" drink (I know... I should choose a vodka... but it was on special!)... but it was AWFUL. Rubbing Alcohol, perhaps? Ew, gross. Comedy Sportz is a family friendly venue for short form improv comedy, most of the time. They have a huge space, and are very multimedia friendly. As with any improv comedy house goes, it tends to be a crap-shoot whether or not you'll see something you like. I for instance, am not a huge fan of going to see a show at 6pm on a Saturday and sitting next to a ten year old girl's birthday party. But I should have KNOWN better. It's off of the Belmont stop on the Red Line, so its convenient enough. There's a bunch of places to eat and shop right in the area. So, if you are looking to round out a date night, you can typically see a 10pm show there any given night of the week for $5. It is a risk, but hey, support live comedy. It is probably better than the $9 movie you were going to see anyways. Postscript: Their prime time shows are little bit more expensive. Good for a group outing. There's a bar-ish. Beer, maybe wine. I'd also like to bump the note that someone posted before...apparently Improvisers can get a pass to get in free to any show that is not sold out. --This I did not know, if it is true, amazing, and I want my $5 back. read more

Comedy Sportz is alright. I think it is a little over priced for what it is. However, if you ahve grown up enjoying Whose Line is it Anyway? Then this might be something you will enjoy. It is one of those things I would say you need to see at least once. I find most people aither love it or hate it. So, if you are in Chicago check it out. If you don't like there are tons of other improv clubs in Chicago, if you love it you'll find yourself becoming a regular. read more

Entertainment wise, Comedy Sportz Theatre may be the worst thing mankind has ever produced. I use to believe that the movie "Pirates of the Great Salt Lake" was the very bottom of the barrel. Attended 6pm Saturday show. As advertised improv that"s fresh and funny without getting crude or suggestive. Sometimes it's silly but you cannot but admire how hard the improv artists are playing. The competition mode is fun and not overbearing. Seating is comfortable and they don't push you to buy drinks. These are not sketches that have been set up already -- this is improv structured by games and informed by audience suggestions. Some of the talent is as good as second city but the show is less expensive. read more

Needless to say, we caught the earlier family friendly show (there was even a kid celebrating his 10th birthday there with his parents and friends) which was energetic, fun and had me giggling all night! Such a fun and entertaining night! My teenager even enjoyed himself. Worth the money- nice they had snacks and drinks as well.

My friends from LA had told me this was one show I HAD to see. I went in not knowing what to expect and had a blast! The audience gets a chance to vote who was the funniest team so people get even more into it. The improvisers worked amazing together and I found myself switching sides every game. My favorite game was five things. The cast members have to act out hilarious actions while only speaking in gibberish! SOO funny. We hadn't been here in a couple years and decided to check it out. Decided to go to an 8:00 show during winter break. Be warned, this early show is for all ages. This means nothing that might offend the little ones or their parents. The audience was mostly families with kids/teens. I'm a teacher, I spend my winter break trying to avoid kids, but the kids were great and I didn't even mind that the show was family-friendly. It was funny and we had a good time. We could have stayed for the adults only show for free, but we're old so we had to go home and go to bed. The crowd was pretty small, but the comedians and referee did a great job engaging the audience and getting everyone involved. The employees were all very friendly, and the comedians made sure to come up to us after the show and thank us for coming. The drinks can be pricey depending on what you order, but the amount of liquor was enough for 2 drinks, so that made up for the cost. At $25 a person, this is one of the more expensive comedy shows in the area. But, they don't have a drink minimum so I suppose that's the trade-off. Since I live in the area, and had a good time, I would come back. read more

This is pretty lame. I realize most stand-ups are self-absorbed, bitter, inseure 13 year old girls inside (most of the male ones), but these guys are the worst. I was just tagging along for open mic nights out of nothing better to do, and I could really tell this place's lack of business has led to a real employee morale problem. the viciousness feeds on itself and even if you spend enough on booze and cover it's not going to please them much. One of the bartender pricks claimed I was trying to look like "George RR Martin" when it's clear I'm a Doctor Who fan. It wasn't too professional when a girl whom I was told was departing for lovely LA (where I went a few weeks later myself), who I will refer to as "itty bitty titty", was drunk at the end of her shift and was rude to us five seconds after open mic was over. This guy Jamie who is there frequently has this psychotic, desperate look in his eyes and his comedy isn't funny, he's just scary in a not funny kind of way. So's the neighborhood these days. If I really decided I wanted to try the stand-up grind, and cut my teeth in Chicago, I'd avoid this place the plague. One extra star for the black guy comedian who refers to Chicago as the "plot to Robocop 2". I have seen the PG improv show, but since I am a Second City student, I know I can see and do much better. read more
