we were not sure what to expect here. tourist town. off season. cold and wet, nearing the end of winter. empty streets... too, the menu looked both familiar -- Indian standards, well, not really -- and, um, interesting, different.
the wait staff were warm and welcoming, and took a personal interest in us that seemed to go beyond the customary, brief greetings one usually gets. warm, friendly, helpful.
we were very pleasantly surprised with dishes that were unlike what we've experienced elsewhere and were flavourful whilst retaining what is Indian about Indian food. the traditional range of spices made up the flavours, but were combined in very different ways to that done by the usual identical Indian places we find in such abundance here in New Zealand.
we read one negative review that complained about, well, everything. our experience was so positive that we think the complainer went to a different restaurant and got rather confused.
we won't hesitate to highly recomnend Malabar to anyone visiting Hanmer Springs, and certainly will return when we next visit. it was a splendid meal in every respect. read more
