I visited Maker's Mark Distillery around Christmas time and it was nicely decorated for the occasion. There was a Christmas tree made out of whisky bottles, Christmas lights strewn about and a giant Christmas tree made out of poinsettias. My buddy and I took the tour of Maker's Mark. The guide was very knowledgable, we learned a lot about the history if the distillery and how whisky was made. There was also a lot of art to view along the tour such as a glass ceiling made by the artist Dale Chihuly. The tour ends with a tasting of four of their whiskys. My favorite turned out to be the Makers 46. After the tour we stopped at the gift shop where you have the option to purchase a bottle to dip in wax like that is Maker's Marks signature. The cheapest option was only 20 bucks which seemed very reasonable and made for a great memento. We also dropped by the bar for a couple of drinks. I had an espresso martini and old fashioned. Both were very good. The old fashioned may have been the best old fashioned I've ever had! Definitely a great experience and probably the best distillery tour I've done. read more

Did the Golden Ticket Tour as a Makers Mark Ambassador. If you haven't signed up, I highly recommend it. It's free on their website. You'll have to patiently wait around 7 years for your barrel to mature, but it's worth it. Our guide Laura was the best bourbon tours guide I've experienced in my 12+ tours! This may be an unpopular opinion, but personally I would skip this one unless you feel you have to see it. This distillery is so far out of town - we thought we would detour and see it on our way to Nashville at the end of our trip. It was a very far detour - like an hour off the main road. However, the distillery is very pretty and artsy. We enjoyed the tour and the grounds. We didn't have a tour pre-booked but were able to get one last minute. I would highly recommend booking in advance though. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and charismatic which made the tour more enjoyable. I liked the different aspects to this tour compared to others like the printed label we got to keep and seeing the dipping of the bottles. read more

The historic property is gorgeous! Madison was our guide and really kept our attention. Definitely listen to the driving instructions on the website because the small road leading to the distillery is VERY small and you can't see over the hills. I drove up from Florida to take avatavege of my Ambassador "Golden Ticket" tour. Our tour guide Chad was GREAT, very knowledgeable and made the tour FUN! If you haven't been to Maker's Mark, put it on your bucket list...the property is Beautiful and better yet the tastings provided during the tour itself were excellent, and literally right from the Barrel!! Like most tours, you end up in the gift shop when its all said and done....BUT that's where you get to dip your own bottles in that Maker's Mark iconic Red Wax, which was a very cool addition to the end of the tour! Afterwards, we ate at their full service restaurant on the grounds, and I have to say, both the food and service were top notch! Although this wasn't my first time to Maker's Mark, it probably tops as the BEST visit!! They definitely rolled out the red carpet for their Ambassadors! Well Done Marker's Mark, well done! How do you pick a favorite star in the heavens is very similar to how you pick a favorite distillery. By choosing what brings you happiness. Maker's Mark is the full circle distillery. From the artist touches of the stained glass, their programs that give back to the local community, layout of the facility across the acreage of land, product development (Marker's Mark 46) and the tours; this is the place to beat. I know everyone has their favorite but this would be a place to go for any first timer wanting to experience the whiskey making process first hand. They have a large parking lot, shuttle buses from the gift store to your car, tours, tastings and a restaurant on site if you get hungry. This trip was because we were pulling from our personalized whiskey barrel so we were in a VIP Golden Ticket Tour. A little more intimate, a little longer in detail tour and of course finishing by hand dipping our personalized bottles. If your interested in a barrel go to their website and look into becoming an ambassador. It's a free program that spans 6-8 years depending on when your barrel is ready to tap. This trip did not disappoint. The service is stellar, the customer service outstanding and Christopher our tour guide today was extremely knowledgeable. We left happy, with six (6) bottles, and a dipped Christmas ornament for our tree. read more

Makers Mark was my favorite tour of the trip. It was a great balance of history, process, and the actual flavor / tasting of Bourbon. The property itself is large, and it's great getting to walk around the entire site seeing all the old buildings and equipment. Along with the actual property, there is a good explanation of the history of the distillery's ownership and operation as well. You get to see the fermenters and smell the magic being done. I will never be able to walk past an open fermenter and NOT take pictures of the bubbles. It is a magic process that just makes me giddy like a kid at a candy shop. What an absolutely beautiful distillery. We purchased tickets for the tour and it blew our minds! I am not much of a bourbon drinker and my friend is pregnant, so the experience was more for our husbands... however, we enjoyed ourselves so much! The tour was 1hr 15mins and we enjoyed every minute of it! It was so insightful and interesting hearing about the history of how this distillery came to be one of the most iconic in the world with its trademark red wax seal. You will not be disappointed with this awesome tour. Oh, and when you learn about Marji you'll agree with me when I say she was a bad ass business woman and such an iconic figure!! What a wonderful drive into the distillery grounds (single lane road so be prepared to share). We arrived early being the only the 2nd car on the lot we had our pick! the basic tour lasts just over an hour and its filled with the rich history of the founding family that continues to operate the company. We only had drinks and a tasting. My drink was okay but not worth $17. I had maybe half a glass while I saw other visitors getting at one at least 3/4 full. The young lady that waited on us seemed very pleasant. My issue was with the reception staff. All we wanted was a tasting and to visit the gift shop. All she wanted was for us to buy a day pass so we could "enjoy the whole experience." We explained that we didn't want "the whole experience " just the tasting and the gift shop visit. No, we needed to buy a $26 pass to go to the gift shop. Who ever heard of such a thing?? Really! Needless to say I won't be recommending or returning to Maker's Mark! read more
