The lifeguards go through lots of practice life-saving scenarios all day long which I really appreciate so it keeps the team on their toes. Some things that they can improve are the horrible scheduling on the parks and rec website (very not mobile friendly) that is super confusing. Also, they don't update the hours of operation on Apple Maps. I wish they'd have more of a trust system with better pricing or free for people who aren't planning to swim. They could also do a lot better job at letting people know when the pool is closed for swim meets or other big events.

There is an on-duty lifeguard keeping the kiddies safe, and a small swimming pool is another section of the property for little ones 5 years and under. There are tables and chairs and lounge chairs - and a BBQ. Wonderful for parties and other small, private events. The pool is really large and has a diving board. Lifeguard takes a couple 15 minute breaks throughout the day and adults-only can swim during this time. Pool and surrounding grassy areas are kept very clean.

Having pre-registered, check in was easy as well. There are no lockers so bring you stuff in a bag and you can take it out to the deck and leave it there. Plenty of chairs as you wait for the class. Wow! There were at least 3 dozen people in class, mostly seniors who all seem to know each other. The class went the full hour and was easy to follow along. You can be in the shallow or deep end depending on your level of comfort. Energetic instructor who probably catered to the group as there was a lot of repetitive moves. Towards the end we used weights and noodles for a little change up. I'll be trying an evening class next time. The temperature of the water is perfect by the way. Highly recommend you all give this a try.

The Larkey Swim Center is a community pool in Walnut Creek that's great for kids and adult beginner…read moreswimmers. We came here a few times on a Saturday near the end of summer. It's adjacent to Larkey Park, so if the shared parking lots get full, you'll find plenty of free street parking. The pool itself is divided into several section - beginners (3.5 to 4.5 feet max depth), diving, and for lap swimming. They have lifeguards everywhere and they do a fine job of maintaining order. The water temperature was perfect. Our 5yo son seems to have a natural inkling for water but he enjoyed the pool far more than the splash pad, which is also popular with young kids. I tried carrying him up on the water slide but he refused. Note: for taller folks, they have a pretty intense water spray on top of the slide that can blind you. Imagine max shower pressure right on your face, LOL! Other amenities are large locker and changing rooms with clean showers, small picnic areas for sun tanning or relaxing, and plenty of benches and tables to store your bags or snacks. They also have a vending machine for cold drinks. Definitely plan on returning when the pool opens up again (9/27/25 was the last day for the summer). A definite bargain at just over $20 for a family of three.

At swim meets, especially the large multi team events - YWST is always seen as the team with the most spirit. We joined YWST in 2008 at the advice of our neighbor, whose two children were on the team. Our oldest daughter was 6 and our younger ones were barely 2 and 4. Over the next 10 years, we watched our children develop into accomplished swimmers. More importantly in my mind was the great environment for my kids to be in each day after practice, mostly hanging out with their friends, being outside, being active, interacting with kids of all ages and young adults/coaches who were great role models, etc., - versus-being indoors on their phones, with occasional scheduled play dates.

Without a doubt, my fondest memories of the 8 years I lived there all tied back to Ygnacio Wood Swim Club & Team. Years later, when it was time to settle into a community and start a family, I came back. Our family joined Ygnacio Wood Swim Club and Team with little kids and we fell in love with everything it has to offer, just as I remember when I was a kid. Now our kids aren't so little and they have all had the same experience I had as a kid, probably even better. Ygnacio Wood builds lifelong friendships. My best friends today are either people I met and grew up with at YW, or parents we met as our kids grew up at YW. Same with my kids friends. I think it is the legacy culture that attracts like-minds As for the Ygnacio Wood Swim Team...or Y-DUB Nation as some call it...it is like nothing else. Ya, meets follow the same format as other rec meets. The kids start off blocks. People are timing. The water is wet. Etc. But, this is not your -- stand around bored while you wait for a monotone megaphone announcement of your kid's next event, followed by an awkwardly started song off a random playlist that someone made 5 years ago for the one party they ever had, which honestly wasn't even that fun, even though the host keeps asking "remember that party at our house?" while you think to yourself, "Uh, yeah how could I forget when you play that sucky playlist every single meet..." -- kind of meet. Nope. At YWST home meets, you get an experience that starts with a state of the art sound system with clear and fun announcements, music professionally fading in and out between starts and announcements, and a custom playlist uniquely curated by our DJ for each meet theme, guest team and age group. And, well there's the digital display board visible to all and broadcasting the times of each race. Oh, what's that--the display board just turned into a video of the swimmers at they step on the block, but the starter calls them all back down, except for little Billy, who stands on the block not sure what's going on. Ahh, the announcer explains it's Billy's birthday and suddenly 250 people join in for a quick happy birthday song while Billy tries his best to play it cool but at the end he just can't help bust out a smile while he gets ready to take his mark. Oh yeah, then there's the real secret sauce...the coaching staff. They're all home-grown former YWST swimmers who have taken the time to know each and every kid on the team, and bring absolutely nuclear energy and motivation passed down by their former YWST coaches. They recognize and congratulate swimmers at every age and skill level when they achieve a personal best. And, if there enough kids for a B or C relay, they swim. Because its rec swim and the kids are here to swim not watch the A relay team swim. Even though its fun to watch the A relay because those swimmers are fast... I'm very fortunate to have had the opportunity to experience Ygnacio Wood Swim Club and Team as a kid, and now as a dad of a swim family. Very proud to be a Sea Horse. Ooh, ah, you wish you were a Sea Horse. GOOOO YGNACIO!!

The kids loved the giant inflatable and diving board in the deep pool. Now the bad...we visited during the week and thought it would be quiet yet we were proved wrong. When we arrived at 1p it was quiet yet soon the place was crawling with camps and large groups of kids. While we were there, one group was in the large pool and someone in their group decided it was a good idea to in the pool. The pool was immediately cleared so the same group went to the shallow pool and decided they were going to in that pool too. This left only the deep pool open with tons of kids waiting in line for the diving board and obstacle course. Another thing to note the only way to get to the pool is by going through the locker room. We had to take our children through a room of older women walking around naked freely. Gross! There should be another entrance for families with children. Overall too many minuses to out weigh the pluses.

I need a ladder to exit the pool. I tried to get attention of the lifeguard so I could ask for a ladder to be attached, but she studiously ignored me. I made my way to the children's end of the pool where they do have a ladder. This place is kid/young parent friendly but unwelcoming to seniors.

Honestly, it just feels luxurious to be here in every way. The gym is out of this world. So clean, air conditioned, new machines, basketball court, and amazing recovery tech as well!
