We were a group of 26 (you heard me) and we had no troubles finding our seat or grabbing something in the lobby bar before the show. Also it was nice to be sitting inside since some of the comedy shows were on the main stage outdoors.

It was magical. There were no acrobatics - but instead, it became a game of light and shadow on church's ceilings and domes - and memories came alive, snow has fallen and stars blinked in the dark sky. Beautiful songs from all previous shows, in all different languages, made us sway and sings inside of our hearts. The performances were amazing. The acoustics of the church was really perfect for this. The choir and sound of pipe organ was outstanding. A whisper of the song escaped my lips when I recognized languages - Italian, Spanish, French, English... ~Standing ovation on the end~ Encore, encore!

You might not get to see big famous companies here, but rather newcomers and those who enjoy the freedom of the fringe. I enjoy going to the Sunday Night Improv (every Sunday night 8 pm) - a competition in improv with many regulars and a few new faces every time, guaranteed to make you laugh! The crowd in the audience gets quite involved, too. And for those who want to be on stage themselves, there is a workshop every Sunday prior to the show. Everybody can attend for free, and then perform in the evening! The theatre is also one of the regular venues for the Zoofest, the more independent branch of the Montreal comedy festival.
I love art. This…read moretheatre is a gem, pushing work ranging from experimental to polished, from English to French and everything in between, from comedy to tragedy to some other thing. I've had the pleasure of performing here at their annual Sketch Festival. Alain and Mark run the place, and they treat their performers like performers are supposed to be treated. Which is, incidentally, very good. By consequence of performing here, I've also been able to catch a few of the shows they put on, including original bilingual productions, and weekly improv nights. It's all about the art here. It's about people who love what they are doing, and love pushing it to new levels. The venue itself is an intimate space, with a bar up front and two-ish levels of seating. It's across from a strip club where you might be able to catch the silhouettes of lovely-ish ladies dancing in the windows during the early hours of the night! If you live in the area, check out what they have going on, and go to it. I'm so upset I missed the a Capella / barbershop group that was performing last time I was in town.

It was very easy to find a seat at the bar, where I began to have a conversation with the mixologist, a term that unfortunately has garnered a less than serious connotation but this gentleman was nothing short of an artist practicing his craft of making libations. I stayed past the end of the performance and before I knew it, I was the last patron there as they began to clean up, they genuinely seemed engaged in continuing the conversation. I try to visit every year because they always have new additions and activities. This year there were a few changes: -reservations ahead of time for the big 3 activities (ferris wheel, zip line, and slide). I think this change made sense theoretically but in practice it was very messy. They didn't advertise well enough that the tickets existed, so tons of people just showed up and were very confused. Also at first the tickets were available at 5pm BEFORE the day you planned on visiting and then it was changed to 1 hour before the festival opened for THAT day and that day only. Tickets were for 20 minute to 15 minute time slots. The scanning process was slow since so many people didn't know to reserve in advance, and sometimes the employees would just not care and let anyone in so the tickets served no purpose. -Less food trucks but more food booths (from sponsors like the milk company and maple syrup company). -The bell lounge didn't have phone cleaning or VR activities anymore, It was more for drinks and live music performances. - New Tim Hortons game where you threw pucks at a giant screen. -Cheese festival inside the mall! (very packed though so didn't visit) I really love this festival but it's too short! Make it available for 3 weeks and still end on the Nuit Blanche!

After winning passes for Pop Montréal with Yelp I had the pleasure of seeing Alanis Obomsawin…read moreperform at le Monument-National. If you're not familiar with Obomsawin, she's one of Canada's most important indigenous filmmakers and performers. Seeing her after her decades-long career in radical representation of indigenous folks was an outright honour. I say all this to contextualize how great seeing her at this venue was. Le Monument-National is Canada's oldest theatre and is beautiful in that old-world way. With this comes some specificities: you will be seated during a show here, you likely will have to be quiet, you're not allowed to eat in the theatre (although they do sell chips at the bar), and you may or may not be allowed to drink during a show. Despite the irony of seeing a woman with a distinctly anti-colonial narrative perform at "the country's" oldest venue I have to say all the elements that made up the space really highlighted her greatness. The silence that the theatre and her presence commanded over the crowd was like nothing I've ever experienced: by the end of the show most of us were in tears. I likely wouldn't go out of my way to see a show at this venue, however if you ever get the chance to see someone great here I would venture to say it will be legendary.

Both pieces were excellent and I really enjoyed myself. The theatre is conveniently located near métro Frontenac. You will need to circle around to the rear of the building to find the door. Seating is first-come, first-served. We were warned to arrive early for the best seat selection, but unfortunately the doors were not opened until a few minutes before the start of the play, so our early arrival was no advantage. The theatre isn't huge, though, so I don't imagine that there would be any particularly bad seats. The theatre is designed for the possibility of many configurations, so the seating is of a temporary nature -- padded benches on risers. I didn't find it particularly comfortable, but perhaps that was more a function of the show not having an intermission so there was no chance to stretch. Tip: Don't be surprised, the washrooms are co-ed. (But the stalls have doors that close, never fear). We had no problems reserving tickets by phone (with a credit card). Tip: we were offered a great deal of $5 (for a $32 ticket) if anyone in our group was 35 or under, so if you are a young-ish person, be sure to ask if there are any deals available. Oh, et en passant, the pieces were in French. I believe that the resident company (Théâtre du mouvement) makes an effort to have at least one show in English during their season.
