From Herban Farm in Pike Place, I got their Pike Place Herbs. When I was in Budapest, I went to the Great Market Hall and got two paprika tins and a taco seasoning blend from the spice shop there. So while doing a lap around Granville Island Public Market and seeing a spice stall with a huge variety of salts and spices, I had to stop by. And I had to restrain myself given how much bag space I had left. Jean-Pierre Coté will warmly greet you as you approach, giving you a rundown of what he has. All of the salts and spice blends are handmade, and the packaging is top notch, featuring the ingredients, a tasting note, and then recommendations on what to cook. They all come in a variety of sizes, from the small 28 gram tins, 50 gram sqaures, to 100 gram bags, 250 gram bags. It will take you some time to consider what you want, and I highly recommend you keep talking with Jean-Pierre about his selection. I was looking for blends I couldn't get anywhere else, and the ones he pointed out were: Turmeric saffron sea salt - hard to miss the bright yellow salt, which he points out you should add a pinch to your rice to really bring out a nice, Mediterranean flavor. I've done so, and it really does change up the flavor profile. English Garden salt seasoning - you most likely will pick up this mix of pink and purples and wonder what is in there. You really need to read this fascinating mix of ingredients featuring vanilla, potatoes, blueberries and a whole lot more, which he points out is amazing on everything from salads to tempura! Egyptian Style Seasoning - This spice blend really stole the show for me. I'm a big fan of cumin, but the hazelnut, coriander, mint and more really stands out. I was so exited by this once I made it home I found a great instant pot recipe for Egyptian lamb stew and I used this as the seasoning. WOW! I was eating it for 3 days (it was a big recipe), but the flavors did not disappoint. If you live in Vancouver or just visiting and love food, or know someone who does, I cannot recommend Maison Cote enough. You are sure to wow yourself or a loved one with one of his blends.

There's a couple things I always get at Granville when I visit like salmon from Longliners and blueberry bread from Terra Breads and I believe those cashews will officially be added to that list. Yum! The Maple Siracha Pecans were also really good! A nice thin layer of maple gives it that sweet crunch with just a little bit of heat from the siracha. I was surprised how much my mom loved those. She can't handle hot or spicy things but this has just enough heat to be enjoyable to her but it wasn't too strong where she couldn't eat them. Another winner! And then we grabbed the white chocolate matcha almonds as a little treat. The matcha adds a unique and tasty flavor to the white chocolate. Something different you wouldn't easily find anywhere else! The owner has a fantastic collection of various nuts and being able to sample the flavors is so helpful! Definitely worth finding your way to her stall and grabbing a bag!

Bear with me. I have to backtrack a little to explain how I found myself at this shop on a recent…read moreglorious summer day. I'm a fan of Sharlto Copley. I know he's only been in a pair of films but he was excellent in both... plus I know quality so that's my excuse. Anyway, he posted on FB that he'd be doing a low-key meet and greet at this SA shop while in town filming. Having nothing to do on that particular Saturday, I figured why not. How often would I get a chance to talk with an actor who I respected (and yes, found handsome), right? I found the shop's website and e-mailed with some general questions. I received a prompt and pleasant response from Marinda Breese, one of the owners. She answered all of my questions even putting up with my second e-mail with similar kindness. I decided to go for it. I woke up early, packed a few snacks, dropped the top and headed north to Vancouver. I arrived early for the meet-and-greet so I milled around the store for a while. I saw many items that I knew I'd be taking home: chocolates, Branston Pickle, Ouma Rusks, Schweppes Bitter Lemon and biltong... lovely varieties of biltong! I asked the woman behind the counter if she was Marinda and then introduced myself. She was happy that I could make it and we chatted for a few moments. She told me her husband Tom had done some boerewors rolls in the back if I was hungry. Mmm... those are so good! I don't know if they have them usually but if they do, indulge and buy one. After a while, more fans arrived to the shop. You could tell who was there for their usual shopping and who was there for Sharlto. He and his girlfriend arrived after being stuck in some traffic, generously spoke with every single person there and signed anything that people asked. I don't want to dwell too much of the awesomeness of meeting him or anything but it was damned cool way to spend a Saturday afternoon! Okay, back to my review of the shop. It was very clean with all of the labels faced outward, neatly arranged. There was plenty of SA goods, enough to placate the homesickness for any South African. After the fans dissipated, I did my shopping. I grabbed the items I mentioned above along with a huge Cadbury's Turkish bar, Black Cat peanut butter (packed with peanut power!), some single serve bottles of Ribena and a bottle of Peri-Peri sauce! I'd definitely return if I was in the area and I'm in Vancouver often. There's plenty of free parking, just take care to notice which spots are marked for other shops. Tom and Marinda were super-friendly and the elder couple who also worked there (parents?) were very kind. They easily earned the elusive fifth star for their customer service and sheer friendliness. You may have cruised by this…read moreintersection many times and given QS Supermarket nary a second glance -- despite it's hideous orange sign -- too distracted by the multiplitude of other interesting offering in the area...Les Faux Bourgeois, Matchstick Coffee, Ba Le, Sal Y Limon, etc. However, QS Supermarket is not to be overlooked, contending with the likes of Sunrise Market in the realm of unusually inexpensive fruit and veg. Unlike the dig-through-bins-and-find-least-bruised protocol that one follows at Sunrise, QS offers pre-bagged produce at bizarrely low price points. Though the excessive use of foam trays and plastic bags makes me sad, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet in order to pinch the pennies. Just the other day, I picked up some local cherries for $1.49/lb, 4 avocados for $3.00, a bag of onions for $2.00, and a bag of white nectarines for the same. WHAT? Lurking within the doors, which are often propped open with the specials of the day, there is a whole world of dusty canned goods and other basic grocery needs, including some rare "ethnic" finds. There is also a comprehensive selection of regular, non-specially packed and priced produce (bundles of cilantro sell for .49 cents!). Despite its slightly shabby appearance, credit and debit is accepted and the staff I've encountered have all been friendly. I will be visiting again and again. Viva East Van!
