After taking Susan's classes, I was amazed at how much I learned and how fun the classes were. I kept at it. I don't have natural talent. She is a wonderful teacher. Here's a painting I did in one of her classes. Thanks, Susan, for your supportive encouragement, kindness, and patience when I was so frustrated. Also, thanks for never making me paint a seagull!

I'm a professional nature landscape photographer, however, and I don't have enough work in my home for my own work. So although I haven't yet invested in any artwork from Roux & Cyr, I've never felt the owner, Susan, has ever rushed me or ignored me. She's very attentive -- and a great artist in her own right. I couldn't think of someone to better represent the art community than she. My only regret there is never taking an art class from Susan. She told she once had a student who drove up from Boston -- but that would have been a four hour-plus RT drive for me. Now that I live outside of Richmond, Virginia, I don't feel the guilt I once had for not enrolling in a current art class.

They don't make it very clear in the lottery system if the ceramic class is for hand building or on a pottery wheel. I was not looking to learn anything on the wheel. However, I discovered on the first day that the class was in fact making pottery on the wheel. I decided to give it a go since I had already paid upwards of $300 for the entire course. In my first class, the instructor told me that I was going too slow and that I needed to apply more pressure on the clay. I was even worse in my second class because I have early arthritis symptoms and had severe pain in my wrist during and after the class. I felt like my fingers were getting locked and I was not able to apply pressure on the clay. And for the next 2-3 days after the class I experienced pain in my wrist and fingers. I emailed them about my problem in detail and asked if I can switch to hand building which didn't require working on a wheel. They offered me two choices - one I switch to hand building from mid session, meaning I have already missed 2-3 intro classes. Or I continue working on the wheel. But they can't carry forward my credit to the next round of classes. Neither of these choices made sense as I had no prior experience with hand building and I already told them I couldn't work on the wheel. I wanted to support a small business, but they do not care about anything EXCEPT money. Ultimately, I told them they can keep my money and they did. And also never had the decency to reply to my email after that. FYI: anyone planning to join the pottery class, know that you will need to wait in the line to clean up and the whole process itself takes 30 mins or more, which eats into the time they've listed for the class.

If you know what you want, call the friendly crew, place your order, then pay via credit card. They will stack the clay on a pallet just outside the entrance ready to load into your vehicle. We bought 150 pounds of clay recently and it was a lot less harrowing than backing your vehicle down that narrow alley beside the cafe.

While touristing around in the streets of Portland, we came across this awesome College that features amazing art galleries (open to the public + free of charge) with all of the amazing work of the talented local students. Coming here on the weekend wasn't too crowded, we even went up the stairs and explored some more art work and some of the cool art rooms. Some students were working on their art and we even got to see the really dope photo room with its own dark room. So so dreamy! The art and talent of these students truly reflects on their art work. Can't wait to come back in here and check out some of the newer art work. The galleries and art work changes constantly so make sure to stop by and check it out. Everyone is welcome!

The location of MECA is amazing - I imagine being a young person, attending school here, must be nothing short of fantastic given the proximity to every "cool" thing Portland has to offer. The interior of the school is also lovely: the facilities always seem clean, modern, and a safe place for creativity-fostering and imagination-wandering. I always love the times I get to come here and encourage you - if you never have - to take advantage of the open exhibits they have for the community (of which they are very welcoming of). I've been here on First Friday's (it's usually one of my first stops up Congress St and usually sets the tone for the rest of the Walk), for their annual Holiday Art Sale (which can be SERIOUSLY packed, but if you're patient and accommodating, you can find some real art/jewelry gems during that time), for MECAmorphosis in Spring (one of the coolest art events I've been to in the city), or their "COLLECT" show in October. Some incredible art I've seen here (and there's been so much it's hard to recall after all these years)?: 1. Video games created by students and available for testing/playing with. 2. A student who created an interactive art installation of a 1920's circus-themed birthday party for a little boy (there was another one nearby that was of a vegan restaurant, this must have been a project for the graphic design class or something). 3. A split-screen video, half of pre-recorded footage of seagulls eating donuts and half of real-time footage of people looking at the art eating donuts. Hysterical. Love this place and am continually happy it's a part of our city!
