Jake's on the Water - Chef's cut: tonight, Cajun blackened prime rib served perfectly medium rare with mashed potatoes, blue cheese, and baby asparagus

My family and I had dinner at Jake's on the Water during our recent trip to Potsdam. Unfortunately,…read morewe couldn't sit outside because of the rain, but our table inside still offered a great view of the water. The restaurant wasn't crowded, but there were enough guests to give it a nice atmosphere. It felt comfortable, relaxed, and not noisy at all. We started with the Kung Pao Cauliflower, which was excellent. Even my kids, who don't usually enjoy vegetables, ate every bite. For their meals, both kids ordered brick oven pizzas. My older child had the Labrador and finished the entire pizza by himself, while my younger child ordered the Authentic with pepperoni and really enjoyed it. My wife ordered the fish of the day, and I chose the scallop special. Overall, the food was very good, the service was pleasant, and the waterfront setting made for an enjoyable dining experience. I would definitely return the next time I'm in the area.

My wife and I came up to this neck of the woods while visiting family and had a great meal here…read more The location is beautifully located on the water (unfortunately our visit was more gray and gloomy outside). All of the staff we interacted with were great and friendly. Our family from this area raved about their poutine, but a recent menu change got rid of it. Despite that they had a variety of starters/apps, sandwiches, pizzas, steaks, plus other entrees including some specials on a separate little menu. Included on that was two cocktails that we tried, I had two of their Strawberry Rhubarb Collins that was light and easy to drink with just enough strawberry and rhubarb flavor. My wife had their special sangria which had tons of flavor. Both fantastic drinks! As a group we split some pretzel sticks as well as some bang bang shrimp. With both being great bites before our meals with the beer cheese and mustard for the pretzels along with the shrimp sweet chili aioli being perfect dips. Lastly for the main event my wife and I were on the same wavelength and got their Vodka Chicken Parm, that originally was to come on top rice pilaf but both substituted for house made pasta. Everything from the vodka sauce, to the house made pasta, to the chicken were fantastic! Would gladly get it again. If we lived around here I would picture this being a regular stop for us! Friendly and welcoming staff with well made drinks and delicious food! Give it a try!

Jake's on the Water - The contrast of lighting doesn't show this well, but we had an "interior" table tucked well back but still had a great river/lake/flow view.

Loaded broccoli cheese soup was watered-down and broccoli was pale green like it had been reheated multiple times. It lacked any flavor and it too was barely warm. Chicken fingers were dry as well. The only thing that was good were the sweet potato fries, the cole slaw, view of the river and the waitress. It wasn't busy only one other table being served so the cook would have had time to prepare our food. When I told my husband he said he could have told me the food wouldn't be good from his experience. I think maybe if we selected a cold cut sandwich that was made fresh that would have been the best pick but we wouldn't eat there again.

There was also a self serve popcorn machine that was for use for all customers. The prices are okay. It was very full, even though there was a large party, there was no wait to be seated. I would recommend The Alibi to anyone wanting to try some thing new in South Dundas.

I ordered an omelette and home fries. I judge a diner breakfast by the quality of the homefries and these were A+. Extra crispy, real potatoes that were nicely seasoned. Plenty of parking available…read moreand it is located in what appears to be an old mall that while outdated looking did appear to be full of many other businesses. This is your classic diner you would imagine when you think of spots that brings regulars in everyday. Also I must add they were decorated for Christmas to give that little extra holiday feeling, great touch. You are greeted right away by some of the friendliest staff and service is top notch. The person in our party was getting their coffee topped off long before it had a chance of being empty. Not really something you see with service quality much these days. In typical diner fashion they offer their breakfast all day during their open hours as well as have rotating daily specials. While some of the specials sounded really good, and even just their typical menu offerings sounded tasty both my wife and I ended up choosing an omelette. She ended up choosing the bacon and cheese while I got one of their loaded ones that came with sausage, onions, homefries, and cheese. Serving sizes were great and it is definitely a spot you will be leaving feeling full. While both were tasty, we have had better breakfast and omelettes elsewhere but would gladly return here again! The cheese used appeared to be American cheese slices and my wife's hash brown had an off taste from the oil used to fry it. Just a few knocks against the food to make it a 4 star review rather than 5 but minimal overall. Positively though they filled her omelette with a ton of bacon! If you are in Potsdam or the nearby area looking for a breakfast (or lunch) spot I do think this is worth your time! Some of the friendliest staff in a place with old school vibes for a good hearty meal!
