Every German town needs a main plaza!
This is the center of the town of New Braunfels. New Braunfels is a thoroughly German community in the Texas Hill Country, dating back to before the Civil War. This Main Plaza is situated in the center of a traffic circle in the middle of the business district.
In the plaza, there's a nice gazebo that looks pretty old, a couple of statues from WWI and the Civil War, and a pleasant fountain. Be sure to pull up a bench and relax under the giant Texas oak trees. It's a good place to hang out in the shade, and watch the scene unfold in front of you. Time goes a bit slower in this town. In the summer, a lot of the visitors are here for the glorious tubing that this town offers.
While on the square, be sure to check out the local bakery, which has been around since the Civil War.
Yea, the traffic circle can be difficult to navigate. It usually involves a lot of floorin' it, and weaving. The circle is shaped more like an oblong ellipse than a circle. Carol's suggestion to just keep right is a good one.
Parking can be challenging. I usually just park on one of the back streets and walk over a few blocks when approaching the Main Plaza. read more
