Sadly have to admit that…read moreBrisbane has not caught on the poke bowl trend just yet as we have limited franchises that sell it :( But its all good, Suki has us covered for now. Suki is a cute restaurant on the Southbank strip that sells ramen, poke bowls and sushi burritos. You can either pick made up favorites or you can customize your own. I love how they are a place that provides healthy drinks other than soda ! They have coconut water, organic cola, different flavours of kombucha, and juices as well. I chose the regular size ($14.90) #3 poke bowl which had raw salmon, tuna and kingfish with the extra fish, surimi crab, seaweed salad ($1 each for extras $3.90 for double meat), with veggies, togarashi mayo and my base was quinoa and kale. So my bowl with the extras totaled to $20. Sadly, I've never had to pay that much for a poke bowl in America. Everything was pretty yummy, but I wasn't really a fan of the quinoa. I found it way too over cooked and mushy...it tastes like eating grits or oatmeal, but the kale was good. Hopefully it was a one time thing with the quinoa. Staff were friendly, atmosphere was upbeat and they had good seating available. TIP: if your eating in, they give you normal plates & bowls, & if you are making it take away, they place it in a plastic bowl/container. Ask for a carry bag if you need one. Make sure you see what veggies/salads/toppings the staff our including in your order, because some cost extra and some are included (cilantro and chili are free extras) I wish this was closer to Southside because the only locations I know of are Southbank and Balmoral...Because I know Suki is a great option for a healthy take out meal!

Especially with all the bright colour changing display on the outside, it really is hard to miss! There are two sections to the place. A dark ramen section and a bright sushi/burrito style bar on the other. They also have Poké bowls. I obviously went for the Ramen one. The eating area has some booths and some outdoor seating. They have a vegetarian ramen too but even though I really wanted to try the vegetarian option, I felt that I could not understand why the vegetarian one was 2 dollars more than the Chicken and I really have been waiting to go to Taro's ramen for that! So I ended up ordering the vegetarian gyoza and the Shio chicken. I could not really eat the gyoza, since there were pools of oil collected in all the ridges almost like it was deep fried. It did say pan fried on the menu but I felt it was an excessive amount even on the inside of the gyoza. I was not sure what the filling is because the oil flavour was a bit overwhelming but It was mainly orange so I am guessing a carrot base or sweet potato? Disclaimer: I am not a ramen expert but I have had some great ramen in the past from Bone Daddies, Shoryu Ramen and Kanada-ya in London. The ramen was presented well enough (by the way- the worst ramen I have had in Brisbane was at Harajuku Gyoza, nice gyoza-terrible ramen). The stock was pretty good but I could not drink any of it since it was much too salty for my palette. The egg was small and did not seem to be marinated so the flavour was lacking. There was an ample quantity of chicken in the soup and a generous serving of bamboo root (which I love). The noodles were satisfying and a definite improvement to Hai Hai which I tried not too long ago. All in all, I wouldn't say it was amazing but it surely filling and satisfying for a hungry tummy craving something soupy and warm in cooler weather. I rated this 3 star because I have not yet tried the other section and is only based on my ramen and gyoza experience.

The thought of fish and chips often conjure images of TGIF/Applebees/etc or frozen entrees for me…read more A Salt & Battery showed me what real fish and chips suppose to be like. Wishing for the whole deal, I opted for the fried food platter which consisted of fried fish, fried calamari rings, fried scallop, fried shrimp, and french fries. First of all, this isn't beer battered, it was breaded. Secondly, this is a lot of food for one person... The chips were pretty standard fare, crispy and lightly seasoned. Fish was fresh, doesn't have the frozen taste that I'm all too (unfortunately) accustomed to. The calamari rings came with 2 variety, one was the standard breading and the other had an unique seasoning to it that I couldn't place. Anyway all this fried food was completely offset the truly authentic greek salad of cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, olives, feta cheese all topped with olive oil. Order and pay at the counter, take the number, sit down, wait 15 minutes for food. The staff were friendly and helpful, but were quite busy with busing the tables, taking orders, and bringing the food out. They only have outdoor seating. On nights with a slight breeze like the night I came, it was a great experience. However I can't imagine coming here during the summers when it regularly hits the low 30C. I just need that AC.

Affectionately known as Salt 'n' Bat, this Fish and Chip shop is frequented by ravenous uni students and St Lucia locals. It is a BYO venue which means you will often find a table of 20 or so college kids escaping bad dining hall food while charging up for a night out at the RE. While Salt 'n' Bat is clearly a uni kid hang out, its tasty menu (especially the awesome battered chips and Salt and Pepper Squid) attracts a more diverse crowd. Anyone aching for some good fish and chips will find this restaurant to their liking. They also have an impressive range of Boylan vintage sodas, my favourite of which is the traditional tasting root beer. Salt 'n' Bat is dine in or take away. If you are dining in, however, don't expect anything fancy as you will be seated in red or blue plastic chairs with a white plastic table. Nonetheless, the good food (and hopefully good company you keep) is enough to make Salt 'n' Bat a fine place to eat.

Oozing trendy loft style with a bit of ski château-chic, this swanky bar did nothing but impress from the moment we walked in. The exceptionally friendly staff, creative (and potent) cocktails, gorgeous fit out, and some really swoon-inducing menu items (think: Kentucky Fried Duck and the aforementioned truffle mac 'n' cheese) quickly proved that the substance matched the style. From the samplings I indulged in, I reckon I could have ordered page one of the gorgeous leather bound menu and been continually impressed - it's just a good thing that the menu items are all intended to share as the mysterious three letter menu descriptions piqued all of our foodie fetishes. Public continued to woo me with their gin cocktails (try the Space Gin Smash or Public Nuisance) and no one should leave this inner-city dwelling without trying at least a mouthful of their truffle mac 'n' cheese. The space is part city loft, part English manor and to their credit you feel comfortable enough in the high-back wicker "thrones", as I'll call them, to potentially outstay your welcome (not that the wait staff would make you feel that way. To be honest for most of the evening it was list we were talking to an old friend each time the waiter came around.) The menu is designed to be shared and on the night we visited became quite the conversation point between the group. With only three word descriptions your imagination is given permission to run wild as you concoct images of the food you will receive. The KFD (Kentucky Fried Duck) won a lot of admiration as did the simple and rustic baked beans served in a tin. This is one new Brisbane venue that is testament to our city growing up and coming into its own.

And that's not to say that dinner at Sizzling Mongolian isn't good, it is, but just don't expect mind-blowing greatness - that's all. You walk into a restaurant that's decorated to remind you that you might just be dining in a Mongolian tent in the middle of the desert (if you weren't surrounded by views of the Brisbane city in the distance), and once you're seated you walk casually to the balcony where you follow this routine. I warn you, while it isn't as strict as ordering soup from the Soup Nazi, there is a process that keeps this restaurant moving in an orderly manner. 1. Pick your bowl up from table 1 2. Select your meat from the freezer cabinet. There's lamb, beef, pork and chicken. All sliced thinly, frozen and ready to make friends with the vegetables you're about to introduce them to. 3. And there's step 3. Shuffle two steps to your right and fill your bowl up with freshly cut cabbage, bean sprouts, carrot, capsicum, pineapple, tomato, bok choy and shallots. 4. Shuffle another two steps to your right to the sauce table. Chilli, soy sauce, lemon, garlic, coriander and about a handful more sauces to select to add "flavour" your dish. 5. Take a turn behind you and leave your bowl on the counter for the Iron Chef to cook your meal on the massive outdoor BBQ (not your standard backyard barbie, okay). Wait about a nano second before going back to your table to devour your meal. Repeat this as many times as your stomach will allow. I managed two. How many bowls can you do?

Since I JUST moved to Brisbane, I had to rely on my fellow Yelpers. Thank you Yelpers for being there for me. I was also reassured when I walked in and it was ONLY Korean people customers. They only brought out 3 tiny dishes of sweet potato, pasta, and kimchi. I am used to a more varied selection of at least 6-8 mini dishes to start the meal off. The kimchi was fantastic though! I will give them that. I don't know if that's how they do here in Australia or just at this particular restaurant. Our meals came out in an appropriate amount of time. I ordered the Dol Sot Bi Bim Bap and it was pretty tasty. Not the best I have ever had but filled the craving. We also had the No. 22 with chicken and rice and spicy seafood soup. When you're ready to go, you just come to the counter and pay there. After going to eat here, my roommate and I discussed Korean food.
