I hate to burst the previous poster's bubble. The Maidenform Outlet is indeed a magical fairy-land of bras and thongs and frilly night things IF you happen to be the same size as one of the mannequin ambassadors of panty-Narnia. I am not, at a curvy and lusciously busty size 18, I hardly "fit" their standard target demographic.
I was watching Oprah one day, (forgive me, I had the flu and I was welded to the couch, too weak to reach for the remote) and heard something about women all over the world not having any idea how big their boobs were. Can you imagine? I started to fret... I thought me and the "girls" were so close, we'd been through so much together over the years. Had I been neglecting them??? I mean, at the end of the day by bras WERE pinchy! And- sometimes they even left marks on my shoulders! Wow... the consequences of ignorance.
I knew I had an upcoming trip to the coast on the horizon and I was determined to find my perfect fit. The Maidenform Outlet had HUGE signs in the windows advertizing "Bra Fittings". YAY! That was exactly what I needed. I immediately swept into the store and started undressing myself in front of the first person I saw with a paper tape measure around her neck, a friendly looking woman in her early 50's. She dramatically stretched her measuring device around my "mountains majesty" and gave out an exasperated sigh.. Needless to say I was somewhat concerned.
"I'm sorry, we're not going to be able to fit you.", she said. I blinked blankly. Was there no hope of finding the proper "over the shoulder holder" for my ample boulders?
"Nothing in the store?" I asked, "No, I'm very sorry" was her reply.
"Nothing that can be special ordered?" - me. "I don't think so", she said.
I had grimly accepted my fate and had turned to leave when the sales woman yelled "WAIT!" from somewhere behind me. She was waving a business card.
"Here's someone I think can help you out. It's a very nice gentleman in Portland who makes custom -ahem.. undergarments for drag queens."
For men? Yes, my mind said, for men. Apparently, because of the size of my breasts, Maidenform had declassified me as a woman all together.
I was somewhat put off, but I thanked her because that's what my momma taught me.
With a smile and a wave I exited Maidenform and headed directly across the paved path to the Lane Bryant- Cacique store; where they had a trash bin directly inside the door for the cross-dresser seamstress' card, and another nice woman who sold me half a dozen gorgeous brassieres that fit me perfectly. Apparently they DO make them in my size.
Thanks Lane Bryant! read more
