Gosh, where do I even start? Let's just say that I found out about this place since my mother used to eat here since she was a little girl. We went to try it once and then started the many adventures to Chinatown just to taste their food. Don't expect too much though, this place looks like it has not been renovated for 20 years. It looked like a kitchen extended up to the second floor. Word of advice, eat at the second floor--they have the air-conditioning there. If you come to visit, try my favorites Maki Mi and Kikiam which would fill you up that there would be no more space for more! But if there is, also try their rice meals. If you do drop by, say hi to the owner who sits at a table in the second floor.

The maki mi came piping hot with those tender pork strips swimming in thick, savory gravy--perfectly balanced, not too salty, just deeply satisfying. Paired it with their chunky homemade kikiam and a bowl of miki bihon loaded with fresh fish balls that actually taste like real fish, not the processed kind. The place is still the same old-school, no-frills spot upstairs with the AC blasting, tables squeezed together, and that familiar hum of families chatting over bowls. Nothing fancy, but everything hits exactly right. Been coming here since I was a kid and it's still one of the few places that never disappoints. Absolute gem for real, no-nonsense Chinese Pinoy food. 5 stars all the way.

Service was friendly even though it was packed; our server made sure we had hot tea refills without us asking. Super affordable too--we fed six of us and still had leftovers for under 2k. Most of the good Chinese joints that I know have utilitarian tables and chairs, and there is usually a Lazy Susan in the middle of the round tables to make it easier for food to be shared by your entire dinner party. As with the decor, the best food is very often dead simple, as with the case of Yue Lai's menu. I was craving a "vetsin fix" this one time I went to Yue Lai with my sister who works in one of the skyscrapers in the area. We were both very hungry and we ordered lots of veggies, clams and this mouthwatering pork dish that is made of battered pork strips tossed in a sweet-sour raspberry sauce. It was an offbeat choice that my sister suggested, and it instantaneously became one of our favorite dishes to eat together. I also hadn't had hotpot in a long time so we also ordered the spicy soup base to dunk veggies and meats in. The broth was very spicy but it was also balanced with herbs and other condiments that made it satisfyingly great. There is this cheese-stuffed fish ball that just melts in your mouth and is all kinds of fantastic. I would love to come back really soon to try it again. I kinda miss those cheese-filled bombs of flavor.

We wanted Chinese food so we went to the heartland of Manila's Chinatown. We got dropped off on the Grab App in a basic Chinatown location. Upon being dropped off, we stumbled on this Chinese restaurant. We got in and the restaurant was cool and clean. We were greeted nicely and was seated to our table. Ordered crabs, shrimp, fried rice, lobster entree, Birds nest soup, and broccoli beef. Everything was superb. No complaints. The ambiance of this place reminded me of a bruce lee movie I watched not to long ago. This was a safe heaven for being comfortable away from the heat. I would definitely come back again. The food was well worth it. Delicious! Pricing was cheap for all entrees except the lobster entree. They got me on that one. I did not understand the cost at the time of order. For a party of 10, the final bill was very cheap, minus the lobster which was almost $100 us dollars. Smh Place is a Gem in Chinatown.

This was my first time in Manila, but the restaurant felt familiar, with a classic universal Chinatown vibe. A spacious dining room with huge tables and a worn-in banquet hall vibe. Lazy susans, dragons and red lanterns, laminated menus a thousand items long. Service was fast and polite, and we were in and out in about an hour. Our guide took care of the ordering, curating a nice spread from that giant menu, which had whole half-page sections for shark's fin and pigeon and frog. We didn't get any of those, but we did have some bird's nest soup, which I think was a first for me. It was interesting, if not especially delicious, kind of a goopier version of an egg drop soup. I didn't bother looking up the dish until now, and have just learned that I ate soup made with hardened bird saliva. Yum. Everything else was less exotic, and it was all pretty tasty, if not especially memorable. I liked the salt and pepper fried squid and the sautéed scallops with broccoli. There was a pot of breaded fish and tofu in a nice, soupy, flavorful sauce. The sweet and sour pork with pineapple appealed to my American Chinese-loving palate, as did the shrimp and pork fried rice. We didn't have dessert, but many of us did indulge in some cold sweet beverages, great for a hot Manila day. I liked both the calamansi juice and the green mango shake, a pleasantly sour, frosty drink made with unripe mango. I wouldn't go out of my way for this restaurant, but it's a solid spot for an indulgent Chinese meal if you're visiting Manila's Chinatown. I had a good time at President Grand Palace, and do not regret the bird saliva soup.

Their bola bola lugaw makes headlines on my friend's Facebook/IG/snapchat posts. Their noodles (all made in house!) are what people seek when they come to Binondo. Ling Nam brings back so many delightful memories that I would love to relive over and over again. When it comes to Beef Noodle Soup, I really think Ling Nam does it the best. You see, there are many kinds of Chinese Beef Noodle Soup that all play with different versions of the broth. This one in particular is much likened to the Fookien style of cooking. Not too strong nor too light soup. Hard noodles, soft meat and a whole lot of beef broth. It's a hearty and full meal on its own. But when you're here, make sure to order a side of Siomai topped with kalamansi. This dish goes well with your noodle soup as you drink every last bit of it.
