The shop is stocked with everything you might need for any type of freshwater or saltwater fishing: rod, reels, terminal tackle, lures, jigs, and whatever else you feel like spending money on every other day. Ultimately, I didn't have the time to go surf fishing for halibut, but I would definitely recommend this place for friendly tackle sellers. Yesterday when I first came to this shop, it didn't felt as welcoming as today. There were workers on that day I came for the first time but I felt as if I didn't get as much help as I expected. So I left and hope to get someone else tomorrow(which is today). I am not a fishing expert as no mean. I have used my father's fishing equipment for 20 years and now I am changing it because it isn't the right fish rod for the job. So my goal is to get a good expensive fishing rod that is going to last me for a long time. When I came back into the store today, Billy was at the front desk. I was nervous alittle bit since my yesterday's experience was already imprinted in my mind but I try to be positive and ask Billy about Rods and Reels recommendation. He was extremely helpful on making me decide my rod. Espicially when trying to explain an expensive vs cheaper rod/reel. He was easy to talk to as well and I felt comfortable asking many questions about fishing questions. Funny thing, when I showed Billy my fishing equipments, he told me they are all freshwater and I used freshwater rods for 20 years at the Pier/saltwater fish. I left the store with Phenix Redeye 800-3 Traveling Rod and Tekota 500Hg. I am happy about it because the price is reasonable(600 for everything) as well as my new rod can be packed up and easier to carry. Getting back from vacation and finally able to write my review. Also didn't want to rush something based off of a bad experience and wanted to give a concise representation of why I'm so unhappy with my experience here. Some preface, I did thoroughly enjoy this tackle shop and did regularly stop by on my trips to and from Huntington Pier. I always heard and read mostly good reviews (get to that in a second) and was VERY happy to support a local business rather than shopping in a big store or on Amazon. My bad experience started out rather good actually. I came in to get a reel spooled, and the prices here were actually much better than others locally and again I just always enjoy supporting this local business specifically. After speaking with him for a while we decided that 300yds of 100# braid and 200yds 60# of mono would be more than enough for my setup. Unfortunately my reel had a rather unique handle on it and the what I assume to be owner informed me after setting everything up that he didn't have the proper reel handle for his spooling machine, and that he had left it at home. Not a problem for me. He asked if I lived somewhat locally to which I replied that I did, and he let me know that if I was willing to come back, he could grab it when he gets home, and could be in tomorrow to do the reel. I was more than happy to wait, agreed with him, and he asked me when I would be coming in. I asked if he's in tomorrow, what time usually, and he said he would be there in the morning, I believe we very loosely said 10am. Good experience so far. The following day, I go in to the shop, admittedly a bit later than spoken about, I believe still before noon, maybe a little after honestly. I was in the area due to an errand and was happy that it was super close to the tackle shop. I stopped in to which I was greeted with a younger gentleman with a fuller head of somewhat curly hair. I unfortunately didn't get his name. I informed him of the situation and I believe he somewhat was aware of it, but from the sounds of things, the owner wasn't in yet. The worker called up the owner for me and asked about the longer handle, and the owner let him know that I guess he was unfortunately not able to locate it when he went home the previous night, and told him to suggest Turner's for me if I needed it in a hurry. I let the worker know that I was in no rush but thanked him for his time and help and actually got to my car before thinking, "yknow since I'm not in a rush, and again I really like these guys, I should just leave my number and wait." To which I did. Left my number with the curly-ish haired worker, thanked him again, and went on my way. Still good experience as things get misplaced, and everyone was still super helpful. A week or so goes by and I actually do end up getting a phone call back from the owner, informing me that he WAS able to find the handle, and that if I was still looking to get it spooled, to come in and he could have it done. AWESOME. I went in and this is where things started to go downhill. Preface before the issue, two things, I had read in a few reviews that there was a worker who just seemed to have a bad attitude and didn't seem like they wanted to be there. From EVERY time I had went in, I never encountered this worker and thought they must no longer have worked there. Two, I remember specifically going over and over again with the owner on the setup for the spooling vs the topshot that I was going to run, and remember to a T that it would be 300yds 100# braid, 200yds 60# mono, and the very first day when I went in and spoke with the owner, I remember asking him before I left about how much it would be. He told me the braid should be roughly 18 cents and the mono he said was 6 cents and I remember him saying so the top shot shouldn't be more than like 15 bucks and the braid no more than 60. Cool, on to the issue. I go in and I can immediately tell the worker that the few reviews are referring to is working. He seems very unapproachable and somewhat standoffish. Doesn't matter to me, I went in and simply said what was going on, and he also somewhat knew what the situation was, and we went ahead with the spooling. Spoke with him a little on what I'm fishing, what he fishes etc, small talk, but do again specifically remember speaking with him on the line capacities I wanted, and remember stating at least 3 times that I would only need and was only looking for 300yds of braid, and 200yds of mono top. He started on the reel, and I browsed around. He finished with the reel, I came up, and he then let me know that he, in his words, "was able to get 500 of the braid on". ..... ok that is not what I asked for. He rung me up and the price was ridiculous in comparison to what I was expecting AND what I had asked for. Billy runs a great shop here. Whether you're fishing freshwater or saltwater, Mahi Tackle has (or can get) what you need. Billy stocks a nice selection of saltwater gear and is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to inshore and offshore fishing. Granted, his stock of freshwater tackle isn't as big...but since the Pacific Ocean is literally right down the street, this makes perfect sense. I came in the other day looking for some saltwater gear and he provided me with a wealth of information and advice on the proper setups I'd need. Let's just say that I left that visit with a brand new Phenix rod in hand and can't wait to break it in on a nice sized fish. Rods, reels, line, hooks, weights, plastics, bait, tackle, storage, apparel...Mahi's got a lot of it. Service is good, if not great. I've seen quite a few new customers and regulars come through here with questions and Billy's always been happy to help. My overall experience at Mahi tackle. I was fairly new getting into fishing for the first time 1 1/2 years back. I bought 6 kicker jigs. 3 irons and 3 yo-yos for the first time there. I came back another time to get my torium 20 spooled up with 250 yards of 65lb braid and 100yrd of 40lb mono, at the time Billy the owner wasn't there. It's been about 1 1/2 years since my last visit. My time in, I went in to get 100yrds of 25lb mono topshot, as he was spooling up the line I asked couple questions about the terez and trevelas. Billy then said , "you ask a lot of questions but never seem to spend any money". At that time I was a college student and just felt really bad leaving the tackleshop. A friend of mine introduced me to this tackle shop last week and I love it. The owner Billy is a really honest and helpful guy. I went in looking to put together a ~$200 surf fishing set up and some advice on what type of tackle to use out there on a budget for what I was fishing for. Billy also offered to order some rods that seemed to be what I was looking for that were not available in the store. He pointed me to some lures and let me check out the rods and told me about the local spots that he has good luck with. After I purchased my tackle he even took out some line and showed me how to tie some knots and some good bass/halibut set ups. I caught a 15+ inch halibut my first time out! :) All of the reels/rods in this store are within $10 of all of the cheapest prices I have found online, the prices on weights, line and hooks are some of the cheapest I've found around the area as well. They also carry live blood worms and other assorted live baits. As far as I know they also do reel repairs and reel servicing. Great tackle shop that offers good advice and doesn't try to push anything on you that you're not looking to buy. read more

One thing I find most annoying about the majority of fishing tackle stores in the area is the poor level of customer service. You will not have that problem here; Billy runs a great shop, and you can instantly sense his passion for fishing and his desire to take care of his customers. I have been shopping here for 3 years and I will not shop anywhere else. Billy carries all the gear and tackle you will need and he doesn't try to intimidate you with his way of how fishing should be. He really listens to what your goals are, and then helps you get the right gear to reach those goals. In additon, he is always willing to show you alternatives and options you may not have thought of. Lastly, he is just a good guy, who has the patience to guide and educate you. He has personally made me a better fisherman and expanded my abilities through his experience and advice. Almost everything you buy in fishing gear is price controlled anyways, its not like you get a better deal at a large retailer, so why put up with poor service? Shop Local! Billy is a cool dude, so this negative review is not directed at him. However, the staff members you hire do represent you and your business and this is directed towards one individual working in your shop. I always try to support local shops in my neighborhood, but will not be returning until this member is no longer there. I recently got back in to traditional fishing after suffering a few Service related injuries that prevent me from spear fishing and decided to start getting dialed in at Mahi Tackle. Billy hooked me up with a good set up with a fair market price and gave me some good tips. On about 4 separate visits to the shop for gear (no Billy present) this 21 yr old employee was extremely rude and disrespectful. Thought he was just having a bad day, but I guess that's just the way he is. Grow up 21 yr-old and learn some manners before trying to get into sales! read more

THESE GUYS ARE GREAT! I have been buying all my gear from Billy (owner) and Chris (manager?) at Mahi tackle for about two and half years now and I would never think of going to another tackle shop after doing so many wonderful transactions with them. This is the type of tackle shop where they will remember your name and truly value your business! Hell, this is the kind of place you can stop by and BS with them for a little without having them try to get you to buy something! They know in detail product information of the top of their head and have no problem thoroughly educating the customer on products and different styles of fishing. I think Chris has probably taught me over 50 different kinds of knots to use in different applications. The store is a little small but they have a ton of inventory and are always willing to order you something quickly if they don't have it in stock. I am an avid fisherman and have been to hundreds of tackle shops but none of them have guys as friendly as Billy and Chris greeting you when you walk through the door. First off, Mahi Tackle carries some of the best fishing equipment around; not your average bass pro shop/cabelas/field time sports/turners. Pricing is very fair and the owner Billy is very helpful. I bought a rod and reel setup and he threw in spectra spider wire and p-line for free and also installed it onto my reel for me. Billy takes the time to answer your questions and directs you to what you want/need, and nothing more. I was looking for the shimano butterfly flat fall jig and called 20 stores and nothing, called the headquarters and they said they are sold out nationwide. I found these guys on Amazon and then tried calling to see if they had any in stock and by luck they had just got their last shipment. I drove two hours thru traffic from Hollywood and thought I wasn't gonna receive the online order till the following week and it was already delivered when I got to the store. I want to start this review by saying thank you to Chris and Billy for all of your help! I moved to Huntington Beach from Oregon about 7 months ago with very minimal knowledge in saltwater fishing. After being ignored and perceived as an idiot at other tackle shops in the area, I finally arrived at Mahi Tackle. Upon entering the store i was quickly greeted by Chris, I explained my situation to him and he recommended that I take up surf fishing considering i live one block from Bolsa Chica State beach. He hooked me up with all of the right gear and thoroughly explained why he recommended it. At no time did i ever feel like i was being given the run around like i did at other stores. Chris also told me that if I ever had any questions at all, no matter how dumb I may think they are, to feel free to call the store or show up. I walked out of there with a shimano clarus spinning rod and a 3000 size shimano symetre. Fast forward two months... After catching tons of surf perch and other small surf fish species I decided i wanted to target halibut. Once again back into mahi tackle where chris helped me out some more! Got me hooked up with the right rod/ reel combo, as well as an arsenal of swimbaits and lucky crafts. He even explained when, where and how to target halibut in the surf. I caught a 28" halibut my first time out with my new gear, this wouldnt have happened without his help! The store may be on the smaller size compared to some of the other tackle stores in the area but they have almost everything that any other place would. Mahi tackle has an incredible selection of everything at unbeatable prices. BIlly and chris have an incredible amount of knowledge in everything from trout fishing in the eastern sierras to fishing for huge offshore species! If you have not been to the store you must take the time to do so someday, you will not be disappointed! read more
