I decided to seek that second opinion overseas since I was unemployed & didn't have good health insurance coverage. At the time I sought the first opinion, all of the bills were on a payment plan due to my budget constraints. However, I just couldn't stomach any treatment &/or diagnostic tests that could put me into further debt. The second opinion doctor did an MRI & found additional serious problems with my knees. It was disheartening to hear that I had such serious knee problems that would prevent me from doing the sports that I so actively participated (rock climbing, biking, skiing). After reading the last review before I deleted it, Dr. Halstead contacted me. Yes, I am a bad patient in not letting my first doctor know of the second opinion's diagnosis. I know that making a diagnosis isn't a perfect science. Sometimes, you get it wrong, sometimes you get it right. Not all diagnostic tests &/or tools can see the whole picture. I totally get that. The cost in the end is what got me. If I have better insurance coverage & have a full-time job, I would likely go back to Dr. Halstead should my knees get worse. I've never had a doctor contact me via Yelp about his/her Yelp review. It's nice to know that there are doctors who do care about people opinions on their patient care.

I was referred to this doctor by the ER at Saint johns mercy upon my first visit I was prescribed a…read moremedication and physical therapy in Lou of surgery to aid in the healing of my right knee I expressed to this doctor that I am a Medicaid patient, and I did not think that Medicaid would cover in anyway the physical therapy... I was given a number through St. John's Mercy to ask for charity. It turns out the topical ointment that he prescribed again is not covered by Medicare and so when I called his office to explain that I had a follow up in four weeks and was unable to start any of the treatments that he recommended I was told by his assistant nurse Jennifer that he would be unable to offer alternative treatments so unless I came out of pocket for said treatments I could go ahead and cancel my follow up. Now I'm a realistic person and I'm sure there's other medication that can be prescribed instead of the latter and for Christ's sake if you are an "orthopedic Surgeon " maybe you have some printouts with leg exercises that you can give to patients to take home! Horrible bed side manor, I thought these guys took an oath to help all sick people.... not just the rich ones that they can juice their insurance companies for bullshit treatments and for sure not have to wait 3+ months to get paid by Medicaid/ health net! If you want a caring dr with a thoughtful staff then get another Mercy Dr... this one doesn't deserve to have Mercy printed on his card!
