And the playroom for the children, just as expansive. Oooooooh, let's not talk about the kitchen... Ummmmm MASSIVE, it's like a kitchen from a cooking show, where are you hiding Rachael Ray? Their busiest weekend is the 2nd Saturday of each month when they get over 100 people coming in for a meal. Father Tony is a very generous and caring individual. He is down-to-earth as well as funny. He welcomes anyone to come in to volunteer whether daily or monthly. This is a great place to volunteer if you are looking for something to do on the weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed myself when I helped serve meals a few weeks ago.

The teachers all said hello to us and chatted - another good sign. The administration was probably the best we've seen - you can tell they love their jobs, they love children, and treat your babies as they would their own. They take 1 year olds and up. 1 year old must be off a daytime bottle and taking a few steps. The price is competitive and I love that they have part time options to start getting the kids adjusted if you want. We have not placed our baby in a preschool yet, but Seven Oaks remains at the top of our list.

I…read morethought the people that were there they were decent people but you know, there are some people there to have issues and yet they have good programs there that people that want to use the programs but I also realize that camp hope is not for African-American people. It's a very racist place. I also work for Michael Kay and he's a very racist person he pretends to like black people. I seen him mistreat a black man very bad and then he had me working for him. I don't know what it was about he let me go for no reason never explaining me what happened, but he's not fair. It's not African American friendly. It's not a place for African American for black people anybody of color. It's not a good place for them to go to that shelter. Unfortunately Yakima is not a place for African-American. It's a very racist Place black people will be better off going somewhere that accept black people without giving them difficulties because life itself is already difficult. And then you you and environment where you mistreated because of your color and Camp. Hope is basically, you know, a very racist place it really is. They only have one black guy that he's mixed with black and white and he's he's an Uncle Tom person and he's only one that's working there. But most of everybody there other than him is white and they have one native guy and a native girl working there. Other than that everybody else. There is Caucasian. It's a very racist place. I'm glad I'm not there anymore and life is hard enough and then you get around people that despise you because of the color and mistreat you camp. Hope is not a for a place if you occasion you get treated. Well, if you're African-American you get a treat awful, you know, I never had any write ups or anything and you know, I never got any kind of trouble but it's not a good place for African Americans. I would not recommend African-Americans to go there. I would recommend them to go to the Gospel Mission on 1st Street.

My volunteering consists within the realms of artistry and creating beautiful rain barrels. Learning so much about water conservation, the importance of stepping up as a human and what my small effort can do to educate others and provide sustainability for future generations. Love working with Jillian, Jude, Andreas, Michael, Toby and the others (still learning names....) Look forward to a beautiful relationship with Green Light and their passion. They serve the Greater New Orleans area with free seeds, gardens, and light bulbs. All this for free and to serve the community at large! They even offer free classes to ensure you're not going to kill your plants! They come to your house and build a raised garden! And fill it with FOOD! What more do you need?! I can't believe more people aren't knocking down their door! I just grabbed more seeds than I've ever seen at Home Depot! And already scheduled my appointment for a garden!

I had the honor of volunteering with New Orleans Mission while I was in town. This place does a…read morewonderful service for the city. The group I was with had set up our volunteer project beforehand. It's not that lengthy of a process to do. We showed up and were taken to where we were going to volunteer and we were on our way. Our mission was to help feed the people that came in for a meal. They had this down to a science, it moved so smoothly that it felt like a video game almost. Everything was done so efficiently that it was over so quickly that it felt like we were only there as decoration. I'm not complaining, they have been doing this longer than any of us that came to volunteer. After we were done with clean up we were give a tour of the building. We also had a sit down meeting where we were explained everything that they offer to the community. This is just one site that they oversee. Like I said, it was an honor.

My experience with the New Orleans Mission was very disappointing and concerning. I went there…read moreexpecting to receive help during a difficult time, but I felt that the main option being pushed was becoming a "disciple." When I said I did not want to become a disciple, I was told I could only stay for two days. What concerned me even more was what I was told about the disciple program. Once you agree to become a disciple, you are required to turn in your phone and other electronics. You are also unable to freely leave, and there are restrictions that can affect your ability to work or have your children attend school. I was also told that disciples are sent to Lynhaven in Hammond. I was told that participants could not keep things like their credit cards, phones, or other personal belongings. From my perspective, having your communication devices and access to the outside world restricted felt extremely controlling. It did not feel like the type of support I expected from a mission that is supposed to help people who are already vulnerable. I understand that programs can have rules and structure, but people seeking shelter and assistance should be given clear information about those rules and should feel respected and safe. Based on what I experienced and was told, I personally felt uncomfortable with the program and the level of control involved. It felt more like a cult-like environment to me than the supportive assistance I was looking for. I hope the New Orleans Mission takes concerns like these seriously and considers how these policies affect people who come there seeking help.

Karen's house had flooded during Hurricane Katrina, and she had suffered other personal losses as well, but she always had a smile on her face and a determination to fight for what she believes in that I respect and admire.
