I was really looking forward to eating at Magnolia's Cafe after getting some recommendations from friends. Came here with my wife and my parents to celebrate my mother's birthday. Unfortunately, Magnolia's fell short of my expectations. The brunch at Magnolia's has potential, but the service really let it down. Our server was inattentive to our needs and did not know the menu well. To make matters worse, my wife's order came out completely wrong even though she was very clear about what she wanted. I had the chilaquiles verdes, which were okay but not anything special. Based on the items in the menu, the restaurant seems to not know its identity. is this a Mexican restaurant or American brunch? I was in town for business and on the recommendation of a co-worker came for a late supper. The restaurant wasn't busy at the hour I visited but I am told that it is crowded for breakfast and lunch. The waitress was quick to bring the menus which included an all day brunch menu or a dinner menu. I opted for the dinner menu though there were a lot of tasty looking brunch options. Drinks were quick to follow and calamari was ordered as an appetizer and the chicken piccata was calling my name. We didn't wait long for the calamari which were huge rings fried well with a fantastic marinara dip accompanying. My work partner ordered tortilla soup which looked and smelled wonderful and which he enjoyed. I have had my share of chicken piccata. It's one of my favorite dishes. I have eaten it around the country and across several European countries in well established restaurants. The chicken piccata created here is the absolute best I have ever eaten. The sauce was perfectly thickened with just the right acid levels. Not too many capers. The chicken was moist on the inside and crisp on the outside. Served over house mashed potatoes with grilled asparagus. The serving size was perfect and I was perfectly satisfied with the amount. Let me reiterate. The chicken piccata here is better than I have ever had anywhere. The chef, who we met, is humble and talented. We presented us a tasting of a smoked brisket that he will be serving at another of his restaurants in town. The smoke ring was visible in the slice, the meat was absolutely tender and moist and the flavor explodes. I hope he also decides to offer it at this location too. $35 plus tax and tip for a deliciously cooked meal that I will remember. I will make the drive when I am close to Laredo to eat here again. Visiting this place from a recommendation of a friend, and I couldn't have been happier with the experience. There was a pretty wide ranging menu available, but I ended up with the street tacos and eating it on the patio. Perfect size for a restaurant, the patio was perfect size for a small group or a couple to have a great meal. I showed up with the fam for a Sunday brunch. Upon arrival we elected to sit in the outside patio area and was holy we did as the weather was perfect(rare occasion in Laredo). The service was quick and friendly. I decided to order up the Chilaquiles Ribeye with a side of Magnolia French Toast as both were highly recommended. Upon the arrival of the chilaquiles I could not get over how massive the portions were. I mean, there was plenty of ribeye on my chilaquiles for two! After snapping a quick photo, I dug into my chilaquiles. The ribeye was cooked to perfection and complimented the salsa really well. The eggs were nice and fluffy and the side of potatoes finished off the meal. Solid!! On to desert.. The French toast looked picture perfect! I wish I could tell you the syrup was homemade but sadly this was the only part of the meal I could critique as the rest of the plate was great! This place had a very long wait time around peak hours. It is a great dinner and lunch spot. I had the Philly cheese steak and fries. It was really good. First time eating there and definitely NOT returning. Extremely disorganized. Waitress kept forgetting items we asked her for like water, napkins, syrup etc. our food took FOREVER to get to our table, and when it did a couple of the items were wrong. My daughters plate took an additional 30min to get served because the other staff kept taking it to other tables. My fam even told her jokingly that she had to be quicker about it. At the end we got comped the latte that my daughter ordered but honestly her whole meal should've been comped. She didn't even enjoy her food by the time it got there. The potatoes, pancakes, and frappe were good but nothing special. The waffles, eggs and french toast are mediocre at best. The fried chicken has good flavor for a separate plate as it has lemon in its seasoning and does not pair well with the waffles. The latte was ok. Such a cute place for brunch, their food was 10/10 ! I had the Nutella French toast and their enchilada which were both super delicious!

Service was fantastic. However the food was a little less than ok. They made my order wrong (which didn't have any additions or substitutions of any sort), the food had no seasoning whatsoever, and even things like the coffee were mediocre at best. Coffee tasted sort of watered out and really had no flavor or aroma coming from it. The experience in the restaurant isn't really something to pay for I mean I guess it looks somewhat nice but the place is crowded and it really doesn't seem like a place to pay for the experience. Prices were a little steep for the quality of it, even the fruit was mediocre, tastes like it's been out all day and came out warm. My thing was just the seasoning to be honest nothing even the fries didn't have seasoning. Ridiculous! Definitely recommend, food is delicious, from the pasta to the chicken and waffles, it's all so good. Only small inconvenience is the size of the restaurant and the service, I do think the size for the amount of people they have is kinda small, and the service is a little slow, but definitely returning! read more
