As part of our (late) Christmas party with work we where taken to the Magic Rock Brewery in…read moreHuddersfield. Nestled away this staple of British Brewing did not fail to please. As we arrived we where greeted with and empty glass and led towards 5 keg taps on the wall and told to get ourselves a beer. This pleased me no end especially as Magic Rock is one of my top 5 breweries in this country. Dark Arts (Surreal Stout), Magic 8-ball (Black IPA), Rapture (Red Hop Ale) and Cannonball (IPA) greeted us at this moment. After the initial welcome we where shown around by Rich and Stu who gave us information, samples and a good overview of their brewing process even down to tasting the different malts they use in their beers. As the tour continued we duly topped our beverages us with a couple more halves which included now a triple hopped version of their 7.4% IPA, Cannonball. This was not the end of the excellence. We finished the tour in the brewing room where, unknown to us at the time of entering, we got to taste 2 NEW, yes 2 BRAND SPANKING NEW beers from the guys at Magic Rock. Along with seeing some of the other Top Secret things they are working on, as well as stuff they have currently aging, it looks a pretty good time for these guys in the foreseeable future. Watch this space. Overall the guys at Magic Rock where informative, passionate and engaging which lead to a brilliant experience for us all. A day I loved and, if given the chance, would recommend to anyone given the chance to visit.

A nice English style pub serving mainly real ale from local microbreweries, especially Ossett…read more There is also a number of guest beers, that change frequently. I recommend trying the real cider, that is served. Food is served at lunchtimes, although it is not the best, in my opinion. The pub has four separate drinking areas and an outside terrace. The pub host beer festivals a few times per year. There is a pinball machine, and a jukebox, but the are rather unobtrusive, and are not a distraction. You can also play darts or chess if you wish. It's mostly regulars that hang out down the pub, but the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming.

My only gripe is what they have recently done with their menu. They've upped the price on standard pub grub and it's hard to find anything under a tenner ( Most of their food on their menu is now between £10-£14 ) Because of this, I now go elsewhere for a daily pub meal. I think they are now playing to the pretentious crowd. Their food is excellent quality, but sadly they no longer do chunky chips, and only do fries. Come on guys, get it together. If you put on Sunday dinners but served EVERYDAY of the week, you will redeem yourself.

There is a small front bar, a larger lounge to the rear and an brighter more roomy extension. The usual Izakaya beer mix (Ossett, Riverhead and Fernandes with occaisional guests) but usually in good nick. Sandwiches sometimes available but basically a proper traditional boozer!
