More fish and chips!
Well this time with a difference. This one is easy to miss if you don't know it's there, and you'd wish you hadn't if you do miss it! Why? Because this is simply the BEST fish and chips Elle and I have ever had! Better then Knights in Glastonbury with their awards, better than King's in St. Leonards who we went to at the beginning of the week of our holiday. Excellent in fact. If you like fish and chips and are in Hastings you won't regret going to Maggie's.
If you don't know where they are it's difficult to get to from the main road. And as I say, you'll wish you knew they were there! The restaurant has odd hours of business too, so this can throw a lot of people if they're expecting to turn up and eat. There business hours are Tuesday to Sunday 12noon till 3pm, and Friday and Saturday 6pm till 8pm.
We walked off the street at about noon, but they were full already! So we made a reservation for around 2.00 when there would be less people around. We went off did some shopping for an hour and then came back. (we'd heard about how good the fish and chips was, so we wanted to eat there rather than go elsewhere.)
We were shown to our table, the staff were very pleasant and friendly with a nice family atmosphere. Once again we both had cod and chips, Elle almost forgoing the chips as they usually give her too many. But she was very pleased she didn't. We also had a couple of cans of soda and shared some mushy peas. Our food was served quickly (within 15minutes) with no issues. The cod batter was super light and crispy, the cod flaked away with the touch of a fork and was delicious! The chips were crispy, fresh, no hint of oil and were delicious, with mushy peas (we shared one pot this time) and a pot of hand made tartar sauce!
Much smaller in portion size compared with Kings fish bar, but the quality of the chips and fish were so much better, so good in fact that Elle ate ALL her chips! She NEVER does that! Ever!! I was surprised just by that, and it was proof of how good the food is at Maggie's. We were the last people there as the place was closing and we saw the chef come from the kitchen and told him how much we enjoyed the fish and chips! He looked a little embarrassed...
Once again we paid just under £20 for two portions of cod, two small chips, two cans of soda and some mushy peas! Well worth it! I highly recommend Maggie's to anyone who loves their fish and chips and wants close to perfection! 'Cause so far this is the closest I've tasted!! read more
