Not my cup of tea, but I guess for an outdoor market, it is not the worst. Aix has become so…read moreoverrun by tourists (Americans and Chinese) as to make it seem too much like an up-and-coming Barcelona rather than the charming former capital of Provence. Mostly stalls along the Cours Mirabeau hawking clothing in the afternoon, food in the morning, depending on the day. There are smaller outdoor markets in Aix that aren't so blatantly commercial and tourististic. I mostly avoided the Cours Mirabeau when I could, including the smaller side streets just north. When the Foot Locker and North Face have stores, you can believe readily that the crass Americanization of French culture has been and is well underway. Rue d'Italie, I much prefer, with its neighborhood feel.

It's no surprise then, that the Aix-en-Provence markets are a gourmet experience. They're a place to indulge all five senses, and a joy to wander, working up an appetite between breakfast and lunch or as a place to socialize. Besides produce, cheese and bread, the Provence markets are also awash with linens, clothing, antiques, and fragrant rows of Marseille soap. And don't forget to stock up on fresh flowers at the daily market, where you can browse peonies and potted plants in the shadow of the stately town hall. Every day is market day in Aix-en-Provence - You can pick and choose the one you want to stroll around, you will love them....

When I went to this stand, there were a bunch of locals and myself - very friendly & talkative locals lol. Chez Magali is the red stand between the two options. Created in the 1930s, L'Estaque district's famous stretched doughnuts have such a unique look to them, often compared to churros which I don't understand because they look so different. It's even said - don't tell an Estacan that Chichi Frégi are like churros! :P Did I mention they're vegan?! This unique pastry is thick & fluffy, almost as if pumped with air to give a light delicious flavor. You can have it plain, with sugar or even with chantilly whipped cream. We preferred the nicely dusted with sugar version best but ymmv. I recommend getting one from each stand & comparing as I did! My friend and I found a huge stone to sit on while overlooking the ocean, about 10 steps from the stand. Gorgeous views with delicious eats in Marseilles!

Simply priceless. Chichi Fregi is not available in Marseille, so you have to make the trek to L'Estaque but it will be well worth it. There are two Chichi Fregi pop-up locations within a short distance of each other and while the other location was featured on YouTube, we did not get a chance to do a side-by-side comparison. We ordered and the husband and wife team worked seamlessly together to take the order and make the Chichi Fregis. Wait! What is a Chichi Fregis you ask? Chichi Fregis is Marseille's original street food. It is a long deep-fried dough fritter. Think of it as a fat beignet loaf/baguette. It's hot and the sugar coating will be all over your mouth, hands, and clothes. With the wind whipping from the ocean, your hair will be flying but your taste buds will be flying even higher once you bit into a Chichi Fregis.
