after hearing so much about the fish market at marseille's old port, i was expecting something far…read moremore grandiose, along the lines of tokyo's tsukiji, perhaps. but when i scanned the quai des belges from my hotel balcony at around 7:30 this morning (the market opens at 8), i came to the conclusion that the fish market must be closed because i saw no signs of life there. lo, individual fishmongers gradually appeared and set up shop from 8 onwards, and by 9 or so there were a good dozen or so of them offering up some very fresh (some still alive and flopping around) denizens of the mediterannean sea. a tv crew filming something about a grisly old timer hawking mollusks added to the atmosphere, and i couldn't help but think that if i actually lived in marseille, this would be where i came to get my fresh fish. still, i couldn't help but get the impression that the heyday of this well-known fish market had long since passed.

We found the best rose petal candy we've ever had--so good we had to go back for more to bring home with us. The nuts and spice mixes are divine, and we wish we had bought more of those. This store has variety, incredible quality, and friendly and helpful staff. Our limited French was not a problem at all, as staff weighed and priced items for us. With all the cultural riches and culinary delights that Marseilles has to offer, this store is a universe unto itself that must be visited and explored to be appreciated. Thank you, Saladin, for being such an outstanding representative of Mediterranean cuisine and especially Arabic culture!

The source just so happened to be Les Navettes des Accoules tucked away on the bottom part of a sidewalk that splits in two. What followed was a delicious experience of freshly baked orange blossom Navettes that cause us to go back the next day for box to take home. The attendants spoke English and was extremely nice and patient with us offering free samples at every turn. The biscuits themselves were crisp and fragrant and warm. They grab them directly from the baking trays in the kitchen so you know they're fresh. Newly baked every day with all naturally ingredients, it leaves you wanting more every time. We had an opportunity to stop by the other (arguably more famous) Navette store however they just didn't have the same fragrance. It seems this store caters more to locals as well since everybody else that happened to stop by while we were there spoke French. A quick pleasant 12 min walk from Vieux Port, we will definitely make time to come back if we're in marseille and will recommend this store to every one of our friends.

We found this small shop while walking around Marseilles and stopped in on a whim. The ladies were incredibly friendly, offering us samples of their unique olive oil chocolate. They are multilingual and incredibly considerate of allergies. The shop has all kinds of unique olive-oil based chocolate, from chocolate coffee beans to lavender infused or coffee infused chocolate. I bought some chocolate covered ginger to take home for about $20. A little pricier but the olive oil chocolate was quite unique and very smooth. Lovely spot, would come back for some high end chocolate.
