Then one day we drove right by Grants, made a speedy u-turn, and trundled up to see what the deal was. At the front, there was a farmer's market of sorts with pre-picked produce at a slightly higher price, but with marked convenience. We were told it works by weight, and were handed baskets for raspberries, and buckets for blueberries, so off we went! The raspberries were first, with encouragement to taste as we went. The raspberries were plentiful, juicy, sweet, and soft, just bursting with flavor. After our baskets were full, we went to the blueberry enclosure, and had a great time picking the plump, tart berries in handfuls from the forehead height bushes, just teeming with the blue gems. There was also pick your own tomatoes and strawberries, but we were so excited to get home with what we had, it was enough for us! For two completely full baskets of raspberries, and a giant bucket of blueberries, it cost us a mere $7something. It would have cost us twice that at the market for just the blueberries! Cash only but a great price, and a super fun time, I would highly recommend it. Family friendly, easy access, and a perfect way to encourage healthy local eating, Grants is the best!

They also have four giant greenhouses and sell the most gorgeous and unique hanging baskets, and all kinds of annuals and perennials. In spring they have strawberries and you can even pick your own there. After that comes their blueberries, raspberries and blackberries, peaches, nectarines, plums, apples, pears, and pretty much every veggie you can ask for. They grow all their veggies right there and on their farm in Deep River, where you can pick your own of all the above, it's SUCH a cool place! And huge. Their daily fresh native corn is unbeatable. We stop by almost every night to get some for the grill, they close at 6 so I make it just in time. They open around 8 or 9, and during the season they don't close on holidays, it's great. One of my favorite parts, though, is their pick your own flowers field. One of the employees said there are over 200 varieties of flowers to pick from, and they do it by the pound! Which is unique, but it is SO cheap! And since they are fresh, they last up for 2 weeks if I change the water every couple days. And you can make a bouquet prettier than any flower shop around, a great idea for husbands to stop by and take a few minutes to pick for their wives and surprise then ( hint hint :) It is SO cool, you have to see it. The other really unique thing about this place is that they grow acres of sunflowers that you can see from the road, it's like an ocean of sunflowers, it's incredible. They sell them for $10 a dozen and 100% of the proceeds go to an orphanage in India. The family that owns this farm is just incredible, the owner has been a part of our community since the 80's and is a respectable, old fashioned farmer that can be seen sometimes when you stop by the stand. His name is Winston, and he will literally tell you anything you want to know about the farm, the way he grows things, or any kind of growing questions. And the staff is super friendly and accommodating. They always either bring my plants to my car without me asking or offer, and they are all really knowledgable about the fruit and veggies and the plants. Bottom line, this place is not to be missed! They have the freshest and most affordable fruits and veggies around. They grow a lot of unique types and varieties of veggies that you can't find anywhere else. The staff is super helpful and accommodating. After you check out the farm stand, definitely check out the actual farm in Deep River. In the fall they do hayrides with Clydesdale horses. There's so much stuff, and it's definitely a family place.

Last weekend, my wife requested fresh corn. And Anderson was in the perfect location in light of my other errands. They have more than just corn, but they have a tent for the corn, and a tent for the other stuff. The Heirloom Tomatoes looked great, and they had Liuzzi (a great Italian Market in North Haven) Fresh Burrata too. But it's about the corn. They had three kinds. Yellow. Silver Queen. And some sort of hybrid. I'm a simple man. So I went with all yellow. You don't just grab your corn. They have corn concierge service. You tell them what you want. And they try to find you the good ears. They also peeled back the top of the husk to ensure you weren't getting a Dud. The corn was beautiful yellow. It was perfectly rounded and full at the top. It tasted great. I don't go around trying ALL the corn from ALL the stands. But I can't remember better corn in these parts. Five Stars

Their market is spacious and their produce is laid out well, so it's easy to move around while you browse. We love River Ridge for their wide variety of produce; everything is full of flavor and tastes better than anything we can find in the grocery stores. We're especially grateful that they always have some of our favorites that are usually hard to find: ginger, turmeric, and local garlic! We also really like their fermented black garlic. The real reason we are willing to drive 40+ minutes to shop here is because of the incredible River Ridge team. Dakota and Matt are two of the friendliest people who clearly love what they do. The staff at the store are just as welcoming and passionate. We get excited to visit and are enjoy supporting them!

Then we walked down to the lovely tulip field to pick our own tulips. While there are only about 6 rows of tulips, they are absolutely gorgeous. You're also allowed to pick the bulbs and bring them home with you, so I can't wait to try growing my own next year. For several years I have been trying to convience Mark to get on board with joining a Connecticut…read moreFarm that participates in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) without much luck. However, the stars finally aligned this summer after he finally realized two things 1) We eat a ton (not literally...ok maybe literally) of vegetables year round and 2) He saw the diversity of produce one of his co workers' received each week from a CSA at Bishop's Farm last year. CSA programs provide a great opportunity that links the farmer directly to the consumer It's a great way to cut out the middleman, develop a relationship with a local farm and get weekly or or twice monthly fresh produce during the spring and summer growing season. Over the winter we signed up and paid a membership fee to buy "shares" for the spring and summer growing season. These membership fees do vary by farm and depends on things like production costs, what produce you receive, and growing season. Beckett Farm had the option of an early Summer Share and a Regular Summer Share. The early Summer Share ran from May to the end of June. Pick up throughout the entire season was on Mondays from 4-7pm. If they had "left over or extra" we had the option to purchase additional items. From the first week we knew that we had made the right decision - fresh asparagus, lettuce, radishes and beets were filled our first box along with lemon basil - a new to me herb. The difference between fresh picked asparagus cooked on the grill and what you find in the grocery store is like night and day. During the summer we opted for the Summer Share where received a box of produce every other week. We chose this option instead of the weekly share since it is just Mark and I we were not sure 1) how much produce we would get each week and 2) how much of the food that we received we would actually eat and how much would go to waste. I am happy to report that only about 5% or less went to "waste". The rest was happily eaten and some itemzs (like the snap peas and green beans) have been frozen for winter use. The produce varied from week to week depending on what was ripe and ready to be harvested. Some weeks we had a variety of different fruits and vegetables and other weeks we had a lot of the same thing. This was trulely an adventure and definately got Mark and I out of our comfort zone. It forced us to try things (like mustard greens and japanese eggplant) that we would probably not bought on our own. That's one of the beauties of Becktt Farm and CSA program in general - the ability to get fresh fruits and vegetables and a chance to expand your culinary horizons. I also loved the fact that I received an email each Monday before our pick up to let us know what would be in our shares. I can honestly say this was an awesome experience for Mark and I and we can't wait until 2013 to sign up again!
