Have purchased at the store for over 10 years. Service pretty non existent but we knew what we wanted so no big deal. Tonight on the way home husband and I dropped in to buy a bottle of dry white and a nip of cognac for a recipe. My husband approached the side of the counter where the nips where and politely asked the young man if he could look at the cognacs , he hadn't even step behind the counter. A older gentleman screamed across the store floor that " you can't go behind the counter, omg. Would you go behind the counter in a grocery store?" This was so loud you could have heard it in the back of the store . He Launched himself across the floor and came to " help". We had been asking the young assistant ( in his 20's" for help who was less than 2 ft away from us. . It was totally shocking and unacceptable for a business to treat anyone like this . We will never shop there again . read more

I'm perplexed by some of the reviews but maybe things have changed over the years. I agree with the review about walking in and thinking it's small - head in back and it opens up to a very good wine and beer selection. The prices are sometimes a little higher and other times a little lower that other spots in the area, but the selection is good, Joe keeps the selection fresh throughout the seasons and the staff is very knowledgeable. You can find somewhere there to offer enlightenment on the stock depending on what you are looking for, which is helpful when looking to try something new. You'll also see there are sporadic wine tastings and other events which I think is a great addition to a take a package store to a wine shop. Great way to expand the offering and take the experience beyond just shopping for a good bottle of wine. I've found quite a few new favorite wines over the last couple years. Absolutely worth taking a pass through. read more

*** Bourbon Hunters Beware *** If you are looking for anything allocated this is NOT the shop. Stopped in last week looking for this years BTAC release and was smugly told by the manager that I would need to know him and his wife personally to have access to any bottles. He then went on to say that anything allocated is stored in his special chest and a raffle is held at the end of year. Only way to get into the raffle is to buy a bottle of one of his single barrel picks. If you are lucky enough to be picked you are then allowed to select one bottle to purchase at retail. He even bragged that he doesn't mark up the bottles like other stores, but isn't buying a bottle just to get in the raffle a mark up?! He also made a condescending remark that if I knew anything about whiskey I would know how rare the bottles I was looking for are. This store and manager represent everything that is wrong with today's bourbon market! read more

Prices are $5 to $15 higher for bottles of bourbon, tequila, etc. Sure, Madison is a nice town, but that does not mean a store should be doing pricing significantly higher than neighboring towns for the same brands, such as Michters, $46, that`s $10 too high as a specific example. So, fairly good selection, beer also, that category is $2-$5 higher than the competition. And with a staff that does not even bother to say hello to you, unless you`re in a real time constraint, you`re likely better off picking up your wine, hard liquor and beer elsewhere. read more

I have been going here since they opened and have never had an issue. I've stocked up for parties and entertaining as well as for night caps and have never complained. EVER. It has a good selection, but frankly the pricing is all over the place. I would consider myself one of their better clients. My boyfriend and I were excited to find Buffalo Trace Bourbon here as it is made in the same distillery as Pappy Van Winkle. When we tried to open the bottle the cork broke off and we had to use a wine opener to get it out of the bottle. The cork was stained, which to me means that air got into the bottle. Anyway, we poured some cocktails and went to sit ouside to read through the NY Times and enjoy the afternoon. When I saw his face after he took the first sip I could tell he wasn't liking it at all, so we decided to call the store the next day and tell them that the bottle was obviously tainted in some way and exchange it for something else. The man who answered the phone was rather rude and uncompromising to my boyfriend so I decided to call as well, asking for the manager. The gentleman who answered the phone said his family owned the store, and he was also rude to me (so I guess that is how they deal with complaints from good clients). He had a strong accent and is obviously not from this country. After such horrible service, I'll be sure to tell everyone I know to forget about visiting that store. As a business owner you really need to stand behind your product. They obviously don't feel that way. Bye-bye Madison Wine Exchange. I'll miss your selection, but not your service. read more

Went in to buy some shandys. The young woman at the register asked me if I had been drinking. I told her I had two beers all day at a pool party. Even though I was with my friend, who was the driver, this girl refused to sell me the beer. Ridiculous. read more

Selection from wine to beer to craft IPA's are incredible. People there are extremely friendly and knowledgeable about their products and they are always eager to help. The Coastal's and warehouse liquor stores are great for kegs of Bud and JD, but when a guy points out an Otter Creek sampler pack and you ask which white wine cooks best with clams on the grill and his coworker takes me to that exact wine, that's just good business. Plus..you'd thing MWE would be expensive but in Killingworth, North Branford and clinton, the same DIPA 6 packs were 2 dollars more than MWE. Great business. read more

This place does have a great selection. I took off four stars for my most recent experience. I've been here a few times when visiting family in the area and have always had trouble at the register because I have an out of state driver's license (apparently the law says you have to fill out paperwork to buy alcohol with a non-CT ID & they don't keep the form past a year). Today the older man who checked me out decided he couldn't sell me anything because I didn't look my age (over 30) and didn't look like my picture...because I wasn't wearing makeup and contact lenses. It was pretty embarrassing to have the differences between my license photo and my current appearance described in front of the rest of the customers lined up. He also looked at the black & white photo and decided that my hair color didn't match. I was apparently suspicious because I didn't have another photo ID on me, because why the hell would I? I should have just walked out, but he decided to sell me the booze after seeing "I had a wallet full of stuff with my name on it." But he did let me know that he could be making a $100K mistake. Nah, bro. The mistake was mine. read more

Good selection of wine, but somewhat pricey. They do not do a good job of dealing with complaints or customer concerns. If a bottle breaks or the cork is damaged when you open it, they will not take it back and give the consumer another bottle unless all of the wine is in it. In my case I poured out the wine after it had leaked and contained glass shards. Other wine stores have a more generous policy. Disappointing. read more

Connecticut is notorious for being a craft beer blackhole, but this store has one of the better selections I've seen in the state.

when you walk in it seems small .. and then you see that huge back room and all the coolers. lots of choices, decent beer and wine selections and everyone o spoke to seemed to know what they were talking about here. not the biggest beer selection but what they had was some of the better selections of what you see around and prices were reasonable. read more

Madison Wine Exchange supplied all of our beer and wine for a recent wedding (we didn't serve liquor or they would have done that, too) and they were amazing to work with! Because our order was big enough, they delivered for free, not only to one venue, but two separate venues. Friday night's rehearsal dinner was at The Place and Saturday's wedding was at a residence and there were no hiccups. They provided us suggestions for which wines to serve (they were all amazing), which beers they could source, and how much of each plus ice we needed for the events. Everything was spot on and they were so easy to work with. Thank you all for providing such a great service and exceptional product!! Large selection. The manager was arrogant and rude. Coming from a wine country (France), I didn't like his style (like a used car salesman) or the way he considered wine. There are other stores in the area where wine is respected and the owner shares his love for wine. read more
