After spending a fair amount of time in 2017 & 2018 on the Madison I've come to know several guides and earlier today I learned of this special interests group who is veiled as a conservation group that their only plan is to try to conserve the views of the river by trying to get a boating ban on one of the most historical trout streams in the USA and limiting these areas to wading only which only would be accessible if you had property in their neighborhoods. They currently continually cleanse their social media accounts of any negative feedback and are actively attacking guides who have been on the river for longer than the foundation has been around. The MRF is a well-intentioned organization that claims more success implementing projects than it is actually responsible for, but then many conservation or advocacy groups are in that same boat. Almost all of the projects I've seen MRF claim credit for are actually conducted by agencies - either Montana FWP or the Forest Service. The MRF Facebook page, in its "Throwback Thursday" posts, has cited many projects that were actually conceived and implemented by these two agencies as shown in their annual reports. MRF may have had some relatively minor role in these projects, perhaps minor financial contributions or volunteer labor, but the MRF has not been the force they claim to be when it comes to identifying and implementing projects. Despite all this, they are a good advocate for the aquatic resources of the Madison Valley from Quake Lake to Ennis. As far as their role in the Negotiated Rulemaking Committee, they are being unfairly and harshly criticized by the real special interests in the valley - fishing guides. As a group, fishing guides fail to stand up for the resources that they make their living off of, and in fact often rally against efforts that are intended to implement long-term protections for the resource. They do not advocate for long-term habitat protections such as controlling riverside development; they do not volunteer to assist with projects that benefit aquatic habitats and species; they routinely oppose any sort of regulations intended to enact protections for the fish population. MRF has done an enormous amount of good for the Madison river over the past years, and has more projects in the works, such as improving access for wade fishermen around $3 bridge. Personally, I disfavor the proposal to eliminate boat access to the upper stretch, unless such restrictions occur only rarely - maybe a few days a month. I have been a member of the Madison River Foundation (MRF) for almost 16 years. Through the monies obtained through memberships, donation and grants it has worked tirelessly to preserve, maintain and enhance the Madison River and its fishery. It has contributed thousands of manhours and hundreds of thousands of dollars in accomplishing those goals. The trolls reviewing this organization are ignoring the science that the river is overfished and fisherman's satisfaction in fishing the river has decreased dramatically in the last decade. The MRF has proposed as one way to solve the overfishing problem and to enhance the fishing for wade/walk-in fisherman is to limit watercraft on wade only sections of the river. This is a reach of about 10 to 12 miles and the total reach is about 55-60 miles for the upper river. The response of the naysayers has been to maliciously attack the MRF and its members and to attribute personal motives that do not exist. Shame on them. read more
