Absolutely terrible. Do not hire these people. We hired Jerry to redo our upstairs bathroom. I guess he was busy with other jobs and considered our job to be too small for him so he put his son, Josh, in charge of our bathroom. While nice, Josh has very little experience in construction. The project was supposed to take two weeks and lasted months.
The first red flag was Jerry changing the estimate after we told him we wanted him to do the project. He originally quoted $13,000, and then right before he was supposed to start, he sent a quote of over $15,000. When we brought it to his attention he acted as if he'd never come up with the original quote and said he'd "take our word for it". Thankfully, he didn't have to since we had an email from him with the $13,000 quote. He still acted like he was doing us a favor, which was the first indicator of how shady he is.
Josh showed up with two other guys, Elvis, who is actually experienced and skilled, and Josh's driver, whose only other job was to serve as Josh's whipping boy. The main problem was that Josh wouldn't stay out of Elvis's way; actually ruining finished work after Elvis had completed it.
Then Elvis was sent to work other jobs, leaving just Josh and his driver. This is when it really became a "one step forward, two steps back" situation. Josh and his driver would be here nearly every day, but most of that time was spent screaming and breaking stuff. One of their fights was so bad my neighbors complained. I kept hearing heavy items being flung or dropped down my beautiful 140-year-old, original wood stairs. They broke through the bathroom wall, into a bedroom full of my clothes. They then decided that that room was part of the construction zone and left trash and construction debris in there. He even left a toilet in there after I expressly told him not to do so. When things were sloppy, crooked, paint splattered, smudged or outright broken we were told, "that's the look".
When we tried to contact Jerry to complain, he would ignore our calls. When I asked him for updates and schedules he would react defensively, then be overly emotional and conciliatory. It was a lot of feelings to deal with when I simply wanted to know when the shelves were going to be dropped off. I tried to get Josh to focus by asking for lists of tasks that he expected to complete each day and then a list of the completed tasks at the end of the day, but it was like pulling teeth. I also had better things to do with my time other than micromanaging a construction job we were paying $13,000 for someone else to do.
Finally, it became too much to handle. Months had passed since the project started and every day more things were getting screwed up to the point that it would never end. I asked that Elvis be put in charge and allowed to work alone. It was days before Christmas so he only had a short time to pull it together. Things went much more smoothly, not mention much quieter, with Elvis working alone, but it was never going to be as nice as it should've been because of all the time spent trying to do things quickly, without care or attention to detail. It's not even Josh's fault. He's just too inexperienced to run a project. Simply being the boss's son doesn't qualify someone to be the boss.
Both Jerry and Josh kept saying over and over how we would be happy with the end product. They were wrong. It looked like a sloppy mess. My husband spent a full day fixing things. We were, fortunately, able to get Elvis back to fix some things even though he no longer worked for Jerry, but so much had been done wrong from the beginning, it was never going to look good. I couldn't believe Jerry would allow things to get so out of hand and be ok with having his name attached to such a mess. Jerry never came to look at the bathroom or even ask if it was acceptable probably because he knew it was a disaster. read more
