I used Dr. Judy P. Rawls as a General Practitioner for 20 years and I recently moved my business to…read moresomeone else. I am a professional, respectful, and low-maintenance patient. Today, I am a 48 year old female. I was recently blind-sided by perimenopause & I realized I should have left her practice many years ago. At least since I was 40, I've asked other CRNP's at Rawls' practice to conduct testing to determine how are my hormones. I am not in the medical field, but I know that there's *got* to be some kind of diagnostic testing to determine women's health. And since I was 40, I have been dismissed by the CRNP's and nurses at her practice with 'you have a period - you're fine' and an accompanying long blink and head shake. (Note: Just b/c a woman has a regular period doesn't mean she's not in perimenopause or menopause.) At some point, her office did start performing regular blood work to check my cholesterol and thyroid and, according to their tests, I was within the 'normal' range. After I shared this test data with my new GP, he just looked at it, shook his head, and said that he & I were "starting all over." The testing she performed over the years was inadequate. According to my new GP, there are a few different thyroid tests that can be conducted to determine someone's health. In my case, I'm looking at perimenopause and how to manage those symptoms. You can imagine my surprise when I woke up one day with acute symptoms when, all along, my then-GP (Rawls) had been telling me **for years** 'you have a period - you're fine.' Absolutely no other input from anyone in her office, no discussion, nothing. At least my GYN told me I was perimenopausal prior to this discovery but that was based solely on my age. Rawls performed little to no baseline testing on me to share with my GYN or me. Rawls' office has repeatedly dismissed my requests for testing of any sort for perimenopause for many years. I guess what baffles me the most about this is that Rawls' office is nothing but females. One would think that female care providers would advocate for their female patients. That was not my experience with Rawls' practice. It was the complete opposite. And, oddly enough, my new GP is a male who has expressed more interest and concern than anyone at Rawls' practice ever did. I recently gave him about 5 or 6 vials of blood (in one sitting) to conduct testing. I think for my annual testing in Rawls' office I gave 1 or 2 vials, once a year. And it's not that my insurance won't cover the testing. If that were the case then why can my new GP conduct testing but Rawls' office "couldn't?" I did ask Rawls' receptionist about more extensive testing and was instructed to reach out to the lab to find out if insurance would cover it. I reached out but no one ever replied to me. I did recently call and speak with the receptionist (Stacey) about this stuff. While Stacey was nice, she did try to gaslight me into thinking that, unless I ask for care and unless I'm displaying symptoms, then basically they it's not their fault if I don't get the care that I deserve. What Stacey (and everyone else at this practice) didn't and doesn't realize is that I've been asking for this for at least 8 years, now. And for 8 years they've been dismissing my requests. I didn't even bring this to Stacey's attention or the fact that their lab never reached back out to me because I didn't feel like arguing. I just wanted to try to glean whatever useful information I could from her before kicking this practice to the curb. The best piece of advice that Stacey gave me was to read the book "The New PeriMenopause" by Dr. Mary Claire Haver. That was the best piece of advice I ever received from this practice. I've had several other negative experiences at her office over the years. Once, I was terribly sick with salmonella poisoning and my daughter, who was maybe one year old at the time, had an ear infection. Both cases, at the same time. This was around 9 years ago. I had to get my elderly mother to drive both of us to Rawls' office. My daughter and I were seen by Jennifer, but Jennifer openly refused to care for my daughter by saying, "I don't care for babies." I did not have the energy to take my daughter to the pediatrician and I was hoping (and praying) that we could, both, be seen by someone at Rawls' office. Jennifer gave me medicine for salmonella poisoning but she refused to care for my daughter. Rawls' website (thefamilypracticeofmadison) advertises that her office sees babies to elderly - this was not my experience. I never took my daughter back to her practice, ever again. Another time, I saw Rawls herself after I'd been in a bad car accident. This was around 10 years ago. Luckily, I wasn't injured but the accident was a serious roll-over. I went to the emergency room and had x-rays done of my head & neck. (Continued but no more room here)

Some background...I am a former US Army Green Beret, injured 30 years ago in a free fall parachute accident on active duty. I spent four months in the hospital, and ultimately got out with a medical retirement. I had some bad experiences in the VA system, and for the past 20 years have used private medicine for primary care. I take, among other things, a narcotic for pain from my accident. I had my thyroid removed in 2014 and suffer from PTSD, for which I take an anti depressant. Dr Rawls entered the examination room, and without many pleasantries proceeded to tell me she was not going to treat me for chronic pain with the "high dose narcotic" I was taking, but she would refer me to a pain management specialist. She questioned the dosage of thyroid meds I'm taking, and I told her I didn't have a thyroid any longer, it'd been removed about 2 years previously. Dr Rawls then asked when the last time I had blood work done and was my previous doctor okay with me taking such a "high dose". We had taken the time to have our medical records forwarded from our previous care providers, and I was honestly surprised because she said she had reviewed our records prior to coming into the room. I should tell you that in addition to having been a Special Forces soldier I am also an senior executive at a local company. My wife and I were both well dressed and happy to meet Dr Rawls after reading so many positive reviews. I had already decided we were making a mistake by coming to see Dr Rawls, when she started asking my wife about the medicine our previous doctor had prescribed for menopause, and I'd had enough of the inquisition. I know many people love and respect her, but obviously we made a poor impression on Dr Judy Rawls. I honestly feel like she was already convinced we were hard core drug addicts when she walked in the room. Nothing could be further from the truth. Maybe we just weren't meant to be her patients. I would like to give a shout out to nurse Kimberly, who was delightful and very friendly. It's only my goal to make everyone aware of what WE experienced. I'm hopeful no one else has the same experience with Dr Rawls as we did.

I received no call back Fast forward to my appointment today. I explained my visit was for the flare up that needed treatment, I was having an issue with dry mouth, needed refills and a referral. I was told it was too many issues and all they could handle was a 3 min exam and the refills I would need another appointment for the dry mouth concern and a referral. I'd probably be okay with that if visits were charged different fees depending on length of appointment but I paid a normal fee. Don't go here if you want care and concern or if you don't want to be just a number to them.

She didn't seem able to explain it other than all insurance is different so that's how we do it. You have to pay upfront. I was an insurance agent before I retired so my take on this is that they are not an in network provider for Medicare and they charge outside of Medicare approved amounts therefore they make you pay upfront. I have absolutely no problem with this as a business can do as they please however I should not have been told that they were in network and took my insurance. I left without the appointment... I wasted time and money driving there that I could've spent getting another Doctor that's in network..

I URGE YOU TO GO WITH ANOTHER DOCTOR (you will never be able to see Anika, so they place you with Harmony Rose, who is just a nurse who writes rx). As Bad As It Gets…read more.. This is based off of two experiences I have had; I always try to give a place the benefit of the doubt but wow... I have NEVER seen such unprofessionalism in a medical facility in my life. The average wait time (with an appointment) was one hour and a half. Seriously. Both days. When I finally got called back (after a 90 minute wait), the nurse was not only insulting to me, but began talking about myself and other patients in the hall once she put me in the room to wait (another thirty minutes) for the doctor. What professional talks about the patients to the other staff? She was ridiculing us. Not friendly at all. I was so embarrassed and I didn't even do anything wrong. She got really upset and argued with me when I corrected what my name was. Sorry--I just didn't want my middle name to be inputted incorrectly as my first name on my records. My mistake. The doctor sees me for about five minutes. Then she prescribes me the medicine I needed and that was it. If the entire visit had been like that, great, but how is it possible to have someone wait that long? The facility is also very dirty. I looked around and prayed that I would never have to get any blood work or physical exams (especially female exams) there. I was there for a simple prescription for sleep medicine and that was all I would ever go there for. I didn't trust a place that had dirt all over the floors and walls. I can't believe they've passed a health inspection. So bottom line: 1- Place is very dirty 2- wait time with an appointment is severely long 90 min est. 3- staff is extremely rude and unprofessional 4- one-on-one with doctor is less than menial I will be posting as many reviews on this place as possible. I will also be reporting this facility to the Better Business Bureau and any other health inspection facilities. Do not make an appointment here. You honestly are better off at the hospital or urgent care. Your wait time will be the same; at least you can have a clean facility with friendly staff. I beg you. Please don't waste your time here. Worst experience at a Dr's office EVER.

We believe that pulled pork he ate was not good. Anyway, took him to AFC in Madison and the wait was unbelievable. I was told they only had one provider and wait time could be awhile. Not a problem! The problem is what happens next. He's seen by a doctor that test him for COVID and flu and it comes back negative. They draw blood and tell me I can get the results tomorrow. In the meantime, they start him on antibiotics worried that he may have have a stomach bug or food poisoning. He gets worse the next day and my wife is concerned takes him to another doctor. The other doctor is completely confused because he's like why they would give him these antibiotics knowing that he has diarrhea and that the antibiotics would only make it worse. He takes him off the antibiotics and he gets better almost instantaneous. Finally, about 30 minutes ago we get a call to tell us he's dehydrated from AFC. I worry that had we not kept went to another doctor and continued him on these unnecessary antibiotics that my son could be dead now. I'm taking him to get more labs done to ensure that they haven't done any permanent damage by giving him medicine that wasn't necessary and quite frankly dangerous. Really disappointed with this and truly this may be the worst medical experience I've ever had. More will follow with updates on his health after this. If you're looking for a clinic that can treat you but excels in ignoring your secondary insurance requirements and botching even the simplest instructions directly given to them by the insurer, look no further. This is the place for you! It's honestly impressive how determined they are to not follow directions. I watched in awe as my secondary insurer, a living, breathing human being, literally spoke to them on the phone and explained exactly what was needed. Like, step-by-step, as if talking to a toddler with a billing system. Did that help? Of course not! Why let clear communication ruin a good disaster? Instead, American Family Care billing department decided to go rogue. They billed incorrectly (again), sent the wrong billing codes (bravo), and then didn't even provide the additional information requested by the secondary insurer. And don't worry, if you're hoping for updates or resolution, just sit back and wait forever. Their follow-up skills are so advanced, they've transcended the concept of time entirely. Emails? Vanished. Callbacks? Hilarious. Accountability? nah...But wait, it gets better. Ever try to email them? Or send a letter? You might as well attach your message to a balloon and hope it floats into the right office. Responses are rarer than a solar eclipse. Apparently, their inbox is a black hole where accountability goes to die. And their physical mail? Probably stacked under someone's lunch leftovers. If you enjoy endless phone calls, re-explaining the same thing fifteen times, and playing detective just to get your bills corrected for care you already paid for with the primary insurance congratulations! You've found your happy place. In short: great place if you want to feel like you're participating in a billing scavenger hunt with no prize at the end. But you will get treated.
